At a dinner party last night I was seated next to a fellow who said he was a paramedic. He works on an emergency ambulance responding to medical emergencies, usually automobile accidents. He then asked me an intriguing question: Have you iced your cell phone? I looked at him like he was crazy, but he laughed and said, "Let me explain. We all carry our mobile phones with names and numbers stored in its memory, but no one other than ourselves knows which of these numbers belong to your closest family or friends." I began to understand, as he went on: "If you are involved in an accident or are taken ill, the people attending to you would have your cell phone but wouldn't know whom to call. Yes, there are hundreds of numbers stored on the phone... but which one is the contact person in case of an emergency?"
He then went on to explain further: "We have started this program called ICE... In Case of Emergency, and it is catching on very quickly all over the country. It is a method of contact during emergency situations. Cell phones are carried by the majority of people, so all you must do is store the number of a contact person or persons who should be contacted during an emergency under the name ICE (In Case of Emegency)." He went on to tell me that the idea was thought up by a paramedic who found that when he went to the scenes of accidents there were always mobile phones with patients, but they didn't know which number to call. So he thought it would be a good idea if there was a nationally-recognized name for this purpose. In an emergency situation, emergency service personnel and hospital staff would be able to quickly contact the right person by simply dialing the number you have stored as ICE. For more than one contact name, merely enter ICE 1, ICE 2, ICE 3, etc. "
What a fabulous idea, and it can make a big difference in an emergency. So I immediately stored the number of my ICE 1 and ICE 2 people on my iPhone and felt relieved. Hopefully, no one will ever need to use it... but it is better to be prepared than be sorry. ICE could really save my life, or at least put a loved one's mind at rest...ICE will speak for me when I am not able to do so.
