Arizona Senate President Pearce Has Been Recalled

Posted: 07/08/11 08:58 PM ET

Mark down July 8th as a day history was made in Arizona.

In a swift affirmation of Arizona's fast-growing and powerful new political movement, Secretary of State Ken Bennett notified Gov. Jan Brewer that the once seemingly invincible architect of the state's controversial SB 1070 "papers please" immigration law has officially been recalled. Bennett confirmed that the recall petitions delivered by the Citizens for a Better Arizona "exceeds the minimum signatures required by the Arizona Constitution."

"Let's make no mistake about it," said Randy Parraz, co-founder of the Citizens for a Better Arizona. "Russell Pearce has been recalled."

According to Bennett's statement, Pearce has two options: Resign from office within five business days, or become a candidate in the recall election. Either way, Pearce becomes the first state senate president in recent memory to be recalled in the nation.

"No one expected this or picked up on this political earthquake," said Parraz, one of the main organizers behind the extraordinary grassroots campaign, which electrified a bipartisan effort in Pearce's Mesa district. Parraz credited a "dramatic shift" over the past six months due to Pearce's often extremist leadership in state senate.

"We had people pouring into the office," Parraz said, citing the role of Republicans, Democrats and Independents in the door-to-door canvassing initiative, "and they told us: Russell Pearce is too extreme for our district and state."

Beyond his self-proclaimed key role in the state's notorious SB 1070 law, Pearce oversaw a near circus-level of extremist and reckless legislation in the Arizona senate this past spring, including draconian cuts in education and health care. Mired in various scandals, Pearce infamously accused President Obama of "waging jihad" on America. And last month Fox News Phoenix explored his widely denounced connections to neo-Nazi hate groups. In a recent interview with FOX News, Pearce dismissed the recall effort as the work of "far left anarchists."

In truth, the Secretary of State's office confirmed that an additional one third of the necessary signatures had been properly collected and verified.

Within 15 days, Gov. Brewer must set the date for the recall election, which presumably will take place in November.

And while no single candidate has emerged to claim the frontrunner's position, one thing is clear: The Citizens for a Better Arizona has galvanized a new era in Arizona politics.

Jeff apparently never considered the possibility that Pearce will stay and win, which I think he will. Things are going to get worse before they get better.

SB 1070 was a copy of the federal law. But this article makes it sound like it was monster. Arizona is going broke and needs cuts. This article attacks a person who made hard choices and makes him out to be some kind of villian, How much are illegals costing arizona, how much is arizona short of making its budget? Why does this article leave out the problems in the system that brought on what has happened. Is this a political article to attack a republicans that is willing to try to inforce federal law and get a budget under control?

I've read that a number of the supporters of SB 1070 are major shareholders in the private prison system in Arizona -- that they stand to make huge profits on their investment in if large numbers of illegals are rounded up in traffic stops and sobriety checkpoints. Strange how all that concern about the future of Arizona can translate into big cash for some. Corruption like that costs Arizona something too -- its soul.

SB1070 is not a copy of the Federal law, it is similar but not the same. If Arizona really needed the help all these years, why weren't petitions repeatedly made to the Federal government, and if they did, why aren't those documents shown as proof that the Federal government were negligent in their duties. Reports could have been sent to them showing the cost impact of all illegals to the State of Arizona, cold hard statistical data instead of attempting to implement something that falls under the Federal jurisdiction?

You ask the question whether or not this is a political article - my question right back is whether or not this was a political move on the part of the entire State of Arizona.

Thousands of illegals do not "magically appear" in the space of 2.5 years. People marching right now who are in college and claim to have been here since they were babies, do the math. Is it because the economy is in the tank so we suddenly advocate profiling?

JJ Stoecker is correct, there are quite a few people who stand to make money with the privatization of the Arizona penal system, and they are in the upper echelon in the system.

People have been making money off of illegals for DECADES - so why is everyone so distressed at this point in time?

If Az proves that it will return to sanity, I may move there for the dryer climate. It would sure help my

Proportionately the T-Party movement is not only a much smaller faction of the populace, but their agenda is much more extreme than the media would have us believe. At one time extremists were considered fringe elements of society and were ignored. Today that is not the case. With wall-to-wall media coverage and millions of dollars from very wealthy donors used to promote, advertise & organize events, the advent of the T-Partiers on the local scenes reached the national level. Consequently this helped spur them into office in the mid-terms. In less than a year, however, they've already lost curry with the voters as seen by the recall efforts taking place in Arizona, Wisconsin, Ohio, Michigan and several other states.

Meanwhile as the predominate sense of buyers remorse continues to increasingly permeate across the country, the national media continues to ignore the more important aspect of the story: the will of the majority.

What we are seeing in Arizona, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, Florida, New Jersey, etc., is just the beginning of a growing authentic grassroots movement that, eventually, will gain enough power to transform the nation's political landscape -- something the astroturf T-Party movement will not accomplish at least not for now, hopefully not ever.

The Goop's anti-American agenda is being slowly torn down. Hopefully we can purge government of conservatives before they completely destroy America, our economy, and our freedoms.

Oh, I do so hope that this is part of a wave of change for the better. First Wisconsin and now Arizona. Fingers crossed that the results in the elections in Wisconsin continue to prove that the country has not lost its mind. We need to elect reasonable people.

There's an important point that's not clear in this article: In order for a signature to be valid the person must be a resident of Pearce's district.

I would have eagerly signed the petition, but I'm not eligible. Citizens for a Better Arizona gathered all the valid signatures they needed, plus 33% more from district residents. Pearce has said he won't resign, so this should be fun!

It is a beginning, now let us see what happens in Wisconsin. That, some of us believe, is a real opportunity to yand the chain of right-wing extremists or extremists of all stripes. Some of us really look forward to the races in Wisconsin. What is obvious is that the "extremist" support groups have already begun pouring money into that state to keep those extremists in office. Hopefully, the people of Wisconsin will recognize that money for what it is, a propaganda campaign, and will reject it and the candidates they support.
09:14 PM on 07/10/2011
Recall elections outside of Wisconsin will hopefully pull some of the right wing's attention away to other states, and force them to send money destined for political ads to campaigns elsewhere.

How odd that there is so little mention of this in the media. Very odd.

Actually, it is not at all odd as anything that would even appear to criticize and extremist on the "right" is viewed as unpatriotic and un-American by many in the media who unfortunately have done a great deal to propagandize their agenda. FOX is just the most obvious and consistent in those efforts. Many local and regional media outlets do the same thing.

Thank you Arizona for giving us hope.

Even though the people of Florida do not have the option of recall, it is encouraging that the average citizen has become more aware of the extreme political direction our country has taken.
