Zach Wahls: Love Makes a Family

It's obvious that Zach Wahls is a loved kid. You can instantly tell by the way he talks about his family. The wild popularity of Zach's testimony is so important because not everyone has had the opportunity to get to know families like his.

"Love makes a family."

There is incredible truth to that simple statement, and at no other time of the year is it more apparent to me. More than anything, it is what brings families together, keeps them strong through difficult times, and is the common denominator that unites families all over the country.

It's also not a controversial statement. The love that exists between parents and children is universal. It knows no cultural boundaries and exists across all family arrangements and compositions.

You know it when you see it. Which is precisely why this incredible video has been shared by millions of people.

It's obvious that Zach Wahls is a loved kid. You can instantly tell by the way he talks about his family. You know it when you see it, right?

The wild popularity of Zach's testimony is so important because not everyone has had the opportunity to get to know families like his.

If more people had a chance to witness the loving bond that exists in the 1 million families with parents who are lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender, we know that politicians, policymakers, community leaders, friends, and neighbors would be more willing to stand up and support the issues that are important to all families.

At Family Equality Council, we've teamed up with Zach and MoveOn.org on the Love Makes a Family Project. Like Zach's original video, its beauty is in its simplicity. By getting as many people as possible to take their family holiday photos holding signs that say "Love Makes a Family" and "Equality for ALL Families in 2012," we will send a message of love for all families.

By stepping out, showing the world who we are and whom we love, and sharing this simple truth with the world, we can change the game for families everywhere.

You know it when you see it. And the more people who see it, the better it will be for families the whole year through.
