What does it mean when people start referring to rehab as a "good chance to get away"? Or anorexia as "a little too thin"?

How about when a drunk driver has "a little accident" or a biggoted rant is referred to as a "slip of the tongue"?

What does it say about our justice system when a serious jail sentence is converted into a "slap on the wrist" or "a good lesson"?

What does this all mean???

Are there still any real consequences to previously unspeakable actions?
What kind of example are we setting with all this... particularly for people who still don't know the difference?
I'm at a total loss.
