Here We Go 'Round the Mulberry Store

With the summer salons largely latent, a good rousing store opening was a superlative excuse to get spruced up (and a little sauced) amidst the swells. Some shopped, some gawked, but a good and gregarious time was had by all.

When Brit 'It" brand Mulberry announced it would be opening in Union Square, the Kate Moss-ish and Carey Mulligan-esque girls jumped for joy. Isn't it easier to look like a sexy Sloane or a hottie Oxie if you have a Mulberry bag neatly tucked into the crook of your arm? And the recent glamarama opening on Grant Street merely reinforced the stereotype of the glam Mulberry gamine: gorgeous, gregarious and game for anything. And there she was, striding in her stilettos up the three flights of stairs, to view the photographic exhibit of British Photographers' fashion images, all curated by Vogue magazine. (Liz and Dick! Audrey! Stella! Kate!) And while Her Majesty Wintour was not present to put her imprimatur of approval, she was ably represented by Anne Vincent, received pronunciation and all. Brittania ruled the day with crustaceous catering from London it-spot J. Sheekey, with delectable elderberry vodka lemonade to lighten the mood. As the line of the limited snaked out the door (fire regulations?) those who made it inside the 3,000 sq. ft. space were able to run the gauntlet from instant party photo favors to cardboard crowns and masks to the top floor of fabulousness, where the likes of Jennifer Seibel Newsom, Maggie Rizer, and Connie Nielsen conferred, conspired, and became ever more collectively comely. The list drew from a broad swath of San Francisco shoppers, with a heft sprinkling of socials, social-lights, sartorialists and swains. A rowdy raffle ended the evening with Donna Lesh and Vanessa Lunt presenting some pretty purses to a lucky few, but nobody left without something in the bag: an adorable printed canvas tote contained this season's lookbook and a sheet of sweet stickers. Even a week before Independence Day, we like this kind of British invasion!
