Kathy Ireland: Green Times Three

What's Your Reaction:

When offered a chance to chat with Kathy Ireland, we thought, "why would Sierra Club Green Home want to talk to a Sports Illustrated cover girl?" To our surprise, Ms. Ireland has quietly become a clothing and furniture designer and built a $1.4 billion a year business. And that sustainability is a core value of her vast enterprise.

Those of you over 40 surely have seen Ireland's willowy, shapely physique on at least one of the three covers -- including the bestselling 25th anniversary edition -- of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue. She appeared in the SI cheesecake magazine for 13 consecutive years, which must be some kind of record. Ireland began modeling while attending high school in Santa Barbara, and says it was "good money for not a lot of work."

She prefers to be thought of as a designer and businesswoman first, an author second (she has written three bestselling children's books and two self-help books, most recently Real Solutions for Busy Moms: Your Guide to Success and Sanity) with acting and modeling a distant third. Ireland is also a wife since 1988 and mother of three. In 2004, Inc. Magazine named her one of the top five celebrity entrepreneurs, mentioned in the same breath with Paul Newman, Magic Johnson, Sean "Puff Daddy" Combs and Francis Ford Coppola. She believes in giving back, and has numerous philanthropic credentials including pro bono work for March of Dimes, PTA, Feed the Children and City of Hope.

Ireland does not just lend her name to products for a fee. She is a real designer and is intimately involved with products that bear her name, from raw materials through distribution. Her first big success was a line of socks (yes, socks) for K-Mart which ended up selling over 100 million pairs. That led to a series of other apparel and furniture lines, all of which are closely supervised by Ireland and must be produced using sustainable materials and processes.

Ireland's customers are basically the moms of America. She encourages them to think sustainably. Her furniture products are recyclable, and she uses only faux furs and skins to respect the animal kingdom. One of her furniture lines is made from sustainably harvested woods from Africa. A genuine outdoorsy type, Ireland was a long-time Sierra Club member and used to go on club hikes with her parents as a teenager.

Ireland faced obstacles on her way to mogul-dom. "Rejection is a gift, it gives you perseverance," she says. "Modeling was good training that way because rejection is part of the job." Not surprisingly, she had more than one instance of not being taken seriously as a designer or businesswoman because of the stereotype associated with modeling.

With more than 15,000 products including furniture, clothing, linens, candles and more, Ireland's company is one of the few highly-profitable sustainable companies in America (it is rumored that Ireland personally hauls in over $10 million a year). Plus, she has scandal-free record as wife, mother, philanthropist and corporate do-gooder.

Not bad for a cover girl, eh?

"Rejection is a gift, it gives you perseverance,"

that's a really good point and it's totally applicable to so many positions and situation in life. this woman is a great mom and advocate.

i couldn't agree more
03:48 PM on 06/18/2010
quick read. i like =) kathy ireland is sooo gorgeous
03:48 PM on 06/18/2010
This article appears to be in the wrong section or something. Maybe it's just me, but there is not really a huge mention on what this actress is doing to go green. I wish it was at least more in detail.... what are the steps that she takes to make sure she has a green product, for example?
03:38 PM on 06/17/2010
To add... I rather read this author's or her organizations point of view on the oil gusher that's permanently destroying the gulf.
03:48 PM on 06/18/2010
i agree
03:53 PM on 06/18/2010
are you kidding me? we've been hearing about this for so long and its all the same info. we just need to try to ease our minds and do something else for a while... its there... unless you're working on it first hand then i would chillax
03:57 PM on 06/18/2010
the oil spill is a very significant and important event! if anything, sierra club green home and this author should be making way of sierra club and writing about the important ecological issues this is and could cause for the gulf region and the world
03:57 PM on 06/18/2010
ignorance is bliss, but then again its important to know what can impact your life
03:37 PM on 06/17/2010
Call me crazy but I just don't get what this blog has to do with being green. It seems more like a general summary of Kathy Ireland. She's a model and now much of an environmental activist. They looks like it belongs on wikipedia or in the celebrity category. Strange and irrelevant.

it doesn't have much about being green, but i noticed the author concentrates more on main stream people and events
03:44 PM on 06/22/2010
I agree with you, it could have went into a bit more detail regarding what cathy ireland actually does to be green. sounds like she's just a formal model turned mom
02:16 PM on 06/17/2010
I think it's really great that she has done so much pro bono work. She appears to be a very well rounded person, who genuinely cares about people and humanitarianism.
03:31 PM on 06/17/2010
i agree, its nice that she cares but then again many celebrities adopt such hobbies. but i read somewhere that she was discovered into fame and belonged to a simple family, so its nice that shes giving back
03:54 PM on 06/18/2010
i know right? so many celebs are just getting all these humanitarian/environemtnal hobbies... they only true greenie is begley jr
03:44 PM on 06/22/2010
well, the article said she does a lot of pro bono work

lol more actress do only pro bono, aka volunteering, they dont need the money!
12:33 AM on 06/15/2010
Does she happen to have a degree in sustainable design? From where if so? Anyone know?
07:13 PM on 06/16/2010
I know there are many colleges that do that, but she probably didn't. most actors get into this with just experience
02:24 PM on 06/17/2010
I just read her biography and didn't see anywhere that she attended college. In this day and age you don't have to be a college graduate to be very successful. Besides, she has a team of people working for her that probably hold various degrees.
06:13 PM on 06/11/2010
what exactly are these green processes?
01:16 AM on 06/15/2010
It depends on what company you're talking about?....

i think nona is talkign about the green processes associated with Kathy's manufacturing. the article is very vague.
02:25 PM on 06/17/2010
True. Every company (clothing or furniture) has different standards that they hope to meet. But there isn't a universal category that defines something 'green' or ecofriendly. I think it would be great to have this, but for now we just have various organizations giving out certifications if general criteria is met, better than nothing.
07:14 PM on 06/16/2010
ecofriendly processes with fabrics mean their organic or made from things like bamboo. and furnitire means theyre fsc certified and use low or zero voc glues and stuff
03:49 PM on 06/18/2010
i hear that bamboo is actually being used up way too fast and that it isn't beneficial to the soils

First of all, "Puff Daddy" doesn't even go by that name anymore! P Diddy is more like it, but whatever. Second of all, she's not eco-friendly considering the fact that she imports all of her "designs" and she's no where close vegetarian... so the whole considering animals thing is a lie! Also, she's way Republican and has very little to actually do with the environment. Many designers and formerly famous people are trying to steal some spotlights by binding themselves with sustainability... GREENWASHING MUCH?!
06:16 PM on 06/11/2010
I don't agree with you at all. I actually attended a Sustainable Furniture Council meeting where she was a speaker, and really there are many things her company has implemented or has been doing for a long time-- before it was the "green" thing to do. I'm sure there's room for improvement in every company, but greenwashing is not one of the poses that she knows how to do.
07:14 PM on 06/16/2010
what did she speak about?
06:52 PM on 06/11/2010
Greenwashing? She does sustainable designs and she speak at numerous events! Clearly, you didn't do your research.
01:52 AM on 06/15/2010
I don't think this post tells all, and I don't think people should be so quick to pass judgement on the does and dont's. She may speak at events, and she does have sustainable design. What about the hundreds of thousands she donates to various charities and the extra measures she takes to ensure that the people working her have decent wages and working conditions. It's the entire picture--not just bits and pieces. I'm not saying she's perfect, but she's admirable.

I did research and I couldn't find anything relevant except her doing a few lectures.
06:37 PM on 06/10/2010
I totally remember Gold Toe socks-- I don't know why, but I do!
06:16 PM on 06/11/2010
again... what's gold toe? like this - http://photos.moabsports.com/500/4994-gold-toe-womens-sloppy-slouch-sock-oatmeal-16037.jpg

aren't those like regular socks sold all over America by different brands and stores?
12:20 AM on 06/15/2010
It's kind of like that, but it was a huge one-brand thing. No one but her could make socks so sexy.
07:15 PM on 06/16/2010
wow those are so ugly lol
06:16 PM on 06/11/2010
They were awesome weren't they!? If I look hard enough, I probably still have a pair or two lying around!
06:52 PM on 06/11/2010
who doesn't. i hate to say this, but im wearing some now
04:01 PM on 06/10/2010
the fact that she offers faux fur and leather is so great bc most poeple dont have that option if theyre concerned with animal cruelty. bravo
06:13 PM on 06/11/2010
haha it's probably because real hide is too pricey! either way its nice to see a designers that chooses to avoid that.
12:22 AM on 06/15/2010
I think it's great-- but how is faux fur made? Is it really that much more eco-friendly or green, or is it just because it's not killing animals?
07:16 PM on 06/16/2010
why would you ever want animal skin animal, its just weird if not gross
03:59 PM on 06/10/2010
her website is not so user friendly but either way check her out if dont know much abut her http://www.kathyireland.com/
07:15 PM on 06/10/2010
Her website sucks as far as maneuverability goes-- you'd think making that much money, she could afford a good website developer. Geesh!
06:14 PM on 06/11/2010
wow. that's a horrible website!!!!!! the layout is hidious! she needs a new webmaster like yesterday!

Her first big success was a line of socks (yes, socks) for K-Mart which ended up selling over 100 million pairs.

That's so funny. I really like she for the fact that she designs all the furniture and awesome decor!
06:38 PM on 06/10/2010
K-Mart-- that's another name I haven't heard in awhile! Do they still sell Gold-Toe socks there, I wonder?
06:15 PM on 06/11/2010
gold toe? what does that even mean? when the tip is yellow or something? they sell those everywhere....
07:16 PM on 06/16/2010
k mart! wow thats a store i havent heard much of lately
03:56 PM on 06/10/2010
kathy ireland is so awesome! :)
04:01 PM on 06/10/2010
i honestly havent heard a whole lot about her since her modelin
06:39 PM on 06/10/2010
She was one of the hottest, most wholesome Sports Illustrated models I've ever laid eyes on-- but that's not saying much on my behalf. I'm sure she's still gorgeous!
07:16 PM on 06/10/2010
She did some made for TV movies for Hallmark, I think. I love the fact that she's all about sustainability though.
06:17 PM on 06/11/2010
I agree :)
