Dear Rooney Mara: Fix Your 'Blah' Style By Copying Kristen Stewart (PHOTOS)

Posted: 01/05/2012 12:22 pm

Dear Rooney Mara,

As you've been making press rounds to promote your new movie, "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo," we've been tracking your style, and honestly, we've been a little... non-plussed by it.

But today was the final straw: you hit up a photocall in Berlin wearing what looks like a gray sports bra, a knee-length black skirt and a headband.

We have to say something.

Some of your dresses are just kind of mousy, like the monochromatic Givenchy cut-out gowns you seem to like. Others look like, well, trash bags designed by Ozzy Osbourne.

Even Daniel Craig has more interesting style than you, sometimes. (Although to be fair, we never pass up a chance to stare at Daniel Craig.)

We get that the whole "Dragon Tattoo" thing calls for a stark Scandinavian aesthetic to go with your mod pixie cut. Obviously, we don't think you should be slipping into some Betsey Johnson ruffles or, like, Versace for H&M.

But Rooney, we think you can keep your style cold and "Swedish" while still being an interesting dresser. Take a page from Kristen Stewart, who successfully merges vampire-bride edginess with couture that's fun to view on the red carpet.

You actually used to look like Kristen when you had long hair -- and we think you can make this work for you.

Kristen wears all of your favorite colors -- black, tan, gray -- but with a hint of drama and elegance that keeps the gothic verve while adding a dose of sex appeal.

Maybe some McQueen, like Kristen wore in Vogue Italia, or a frock like her glittery navy J. Mendel from the "Breaking Dawn" premiere. A little lace or a thigh-high slit can go a long sartorial way.

You're gorgeous, Rooney, and we love your mod look. Here's one way we think you could nail it even better.

Just our two cents. Because when we made a similar suggestion to Kim Kardashian, she clearly (well, WE think) took our advice.

Check out Rooney's looks from the "Dragon Tattoo" press rounds below, and also, some K. Stew dresses we think Rooney could look seriously glam in.

I think Rooney should ignore the author of this article and wear what she likes. She looks fine, and some of her choices are interesting.

In one way she reminds me of Audrey Hepburn.

So why does another post higher up on the Style page gush about her chic style?

Dear misener...stop writing meaningless twaddle about pointless dribble...how about that for an idea?

Based on the criticisms, I clicked on the links expecting to see a really schleppy grunge nightmare straight from the 90s...but instead there is a lovely young woman dressed in some avant-garde gowns and interesting black/white creations (fit, and unexpected details galore.) Style is subjective, but I think this fashion writer is way off base!

Very much so.

I didn't look at the photos here yet, but I clicked in confused cause I know Ms.Mara is very fashion forward. Why should she copy Kristen Stewart?

There is nothing 'blah' about Rooney Mara. She brings her fresh style and an unique beauty to the usually boring red carpet scene.

Did you see her photos from the Paris premiere of Dragon Tattoo?

Magnificent.

Actually, the person wearing the clothes is the only one who needs to like them, if others don't?....PffffT!

Jessica, Jessica...not every "starlet" has to wear color in order to be considered fashion forward or a fashionista. Just because her press wardrobe is monochromatic it doesn't mean that her playful approach to fit, fabric, shape and length should be ignored. Fashion is about self expression and true fashionistas are named as such because they are not carbon copies of what is "trendy" or "popular". As a style editor, I would hope that was clear to you.

She's on her way to being the Audrey Hepburn for this new generation, if she plays her cards right. But, yeah, I also don't care for the bangs.

Kristen Stewart or Rooney Mara?

Misener thinks they are the same.

LOL. Rooney Mara is not only better looking, but also more talented than KS. Besides, fashion sense is relative. I think Mara looks better than the writer of this article (jealous much?) and better than Kristen. I think she looks spectacular everytime I see her. Women need to stop basing other woman's worth solely on how they look. The writer of this is pathetic and so are all the comments below. Grow up.
10:08 AM on 01/06/2012
She is blah, and she's nothing to look at but if she likes it that way, it's her business, not ours.
10:07 AM on 01/06/2012
I think the last person on earth I would base style off of is Kristen Stewart. She may wear designers like McQeen and J. Mendel, but when she does she looks like a homeless person that someone grabbed of the street and threw the clothes on. And that's the key to that sentence: The clothes wear Kristen, not the other way around.

I think Ronney Mara looks chic and tailored with the looks she's wearing to promote GWTDT. And let's not forget people, unlike Kristen Stewart, Rooney Mara can actually act.

her bangs are killing me. . . they're horrible. . . I'm all for a pixie cut when you have the right face for it but those straight across close cut bangs are horrible
10:04 AM on 01/06/2012
The bangs are part of the hair cut she has for the Millenium trilogy - styled differently they're part of the Lizbeth Salander look. I'm not a big fan of them either, but I understand why she has them.
