Decadence is par for the course in Sin City and you can find everything from osetra caviar by the pound to beef cheek ravioli with foie gras, black truffles, and butter sauce. For the ultimate indulgence, opt for dinner at Shaboo, where the minimum tab is $500 per head and and chef Masa Takayama's take on shabu-shabu (hot pot) cuisine includes the very best ingredients, like Omi beef and white truffles.

Las Vegas is great fun if you know what you're getting into. There isn't really anything to the "Sin City" hype - it's mostly a place for straight people (think Kansas or Texas) to drink a bit more than usual and pretend they're living on the edge - but they're not.

Yes - everything is faux - but where else in the Western Hemisphere will you find a hundred billion dollars worth of over-the-top bravura architecture that welcomes you in 24/7? Everything is lit for maximum drama - and in most places every possible surface is smooth, textured or gleaming to enhance a sense of dream-like hyper-reality and millionaire-for-three-days ambiance.

And then there's the gambling. It's no secret that the faux opulence is paid for with loser's money - and most who gamble do so expecting to lose - and so they do.

Me - I get a thrill out of beating the house - and taught myself to be a pretty sharp blackjack player. I play expecting to win - and do - I'm a couple thousand dollars up playing five and ten dollar hands.

And one more thing about casinos - they're the most democratic institutions on the face of the earth. You're welcome 24/7, and no one cares where you live, where you went to school, how you earn your money, what your politics are, or what religion you might be. Nobody will pressure you to gamble - ever. It's all up to you...

Somebody goes to Vegas for the food? All the restaurants are dirty, overpriced by a factor of 10 and serve cr@ppy food. That is just my opinion so go find out for yourself.

There is plenty to do in Nevada that won't put you anywhere near Vegas.

Couldn't disagree more - I've had any number of WONDERFUL meals in Las Vegas. The Lotus of Siam, for instance, is considered by many to be the best Thai restaurant in the USA - and the prices are down home...

The best thing to do in Vegas .... get out of town.

Ski Mt Charleston
Hike Red Rock Canyon
Scuba Lake Mead at Sunset
Drive to Cedar City for the Shakespeare festival
Spend a week-end at Bryce and Zion National Parks

Right: "I am outraged!" ...So much hype I'm just bouncing off the walls, as I type.

What an empty, phony, depressing, desolate place. Capitalist disneyland. I don't get people who look at Vegas and see "fun" and happiness. It's like coming to the table and finding your dinner is a plate full of Pop Rocks, a margarine salad, and a big glass of Karo Syrup to wash it down with...

It's a place you go get wasted at the entire time you go and party with your friends. If you lack friends or a sense or partying then vegas most likely isn't for you. People like kopanko should just stay home and watch the rest of us have fun on TV.

Well the good thing is that for any of these indulgences you won't have to stand in line. (Oh, and I don't want to even look at myself in my pajamas, much less someone else.)

If you think that's bad you should see what a deer does when you shoot it, it's starts bleeding out but doesn't die, and you have to cut it's throat, then field dress it - all within moments of it being alive.

Then you process it into delicious food.

No thanks. Guess I'd be too busy thinking "how many hours will I have to work to pay for this stuff?" to enjoy it. I'd rather go camping.

You should go and have fun with the local people. What I love about Vegas is you can have breakfast at Mount Charleston lunch at Lake Mead and dinner inside of Vegas all in the same day if you want. Most people don't know that there is more to Vegas besides the strip and it's glitz and glamour.

If I could meet some nice Nevadans out in the desert, in the nice spring weather, I'm sure we'd have a fine time. Maybe someday. Peace.

Shabu shabu is the Japanese version of fondue without the flavor, and like Nobu Matsuhisa, Masa Takayama is all hype. These two are the P.T. Barnum's of Japanese foodery in America!
