Rick Perry: The Man Who Never Was

Posted: 01/04/12 07:40 AM ET

Rick Perry has always been just smart enough to know what he can do and what is a waste of his time. When he was asked to sponsor bills during his days in the legislature, he told proponents not to bother leaving him analysis or draft copies because he would never read them.

"Just tell me what it does," he said.

When he won his first statewide office as Texas Agriculture Commissioner, he did it by changing parties and having Karl Rove run his campaign. Perry, in fact, later acknowledged, "Karl did everything." Unfortunately, more than a decade after he left that office, Texas is still dealing with bad debts from an agriculture loan program backed by Perry.

He was not Lieutenant Governor long enough to make major stumbles because George W. Bush left for the White House and Perry moved into the governor's mansion. If he'd had even the slightest amount of self-awareness, Rick Perry would have looked around that grand old structure and pinched himself while wondering how in the hell it all happened.

Rick Perry has never had a true sense of who he is until he conceded here in Iowa. What he knows, and what most of America has also learned, is that he may be the least intelligent governor in the country. Just like he had never paid attention to those bills he was asked to sponsor as a legislator back in the 80s, Rick Perry ignored issues relevant to winning the presidency. He was always too busy helping his lobbyist friends and corporations seeking taxpayer handouts to bother learning the number of Supreme Court justices or even their names.

He was a gaffe machine in cowboy boots powered by oil money and rich Texans who drooled over the idea that Perry would open Washington's doors to all of their big dollar dreams. And Perry, on paper, which is where he should have stayed, was the best candidate for the GOP. He had been a governor of Texas for more than a decade and had the political positions that evangelicals and the Tea Party lusted over. Perry would have done better in this campaign if he had never spoken a word and simply walked around and waved his arm at the crowds.

But then he went and talked.

Sort of. His "oops" moment will be taught in political science books for generations to come. And young collegians will wonder how a man so stupid could ever think that he might become president. Hell, even Ronald Reagan learned his lines. But Perry couldn't be bothered. He'd never had to debate much to get where he was and it's clear he didn't read or think on complex issues. He just decided to run for the office and raise money.

He might say he is "reassessing" but he is done. The worst governor in the history of Texas may have set a new standard for the worst presidential candidate. Money and profile and reputation are not sufficient in the race to the White House. Perry has embarrassed himself and his state and is likely oblivious to the scope of his failure. A friend and long time associate of Perry's said the governor had always been very good at just trying things to see how they unrolled. If he failed, he simply shrugged and moved on. He has failed and failed miserably and a simple shrug will hardly do for a response. How does he explain the $17 million plus that he wasted, including about $4 million on TV ads in Iowa? One analysis indicates he spent $500 per vote. He has done worse than Texas Governor John Connally did here in 1980 and worse the Texas U.S. Senator Phil Gramm in '96. Rick Santorum did better with $500,000.

His endorsement may end up being sought by Romney or Gingrich or Santorum because Texas will be essential to any Republican presidential plans for Washington. But who wants the dumb guy's support? Rick Perry can reassess all he wants, but his campaign, which was mangled as poorly as his syntax, is finished.

And if he doesn't know that, he is even stupider than he appeared during the debates.

Unfortunately, he IS still Governor of TX. Thank your lucky stars that he peaked early & showed his hand...we have him for 2 more years... hopefully, he will 1) decide to spend more time with his family or 2) some great Democrat will beat him & he can just silently fold his tent & steal away... Either way, Texans will save some money when they get to stop paying for his $10,000 condo while the Governor's Mansion is being restored......
Thank God there were people who actually LISTENED this time - "When we tell you NOT TO VOTE for someone from TX .....Pay Attention!!!!! They seem to have done so... although I understand that Perry is still going to South Carolina; his name isn't on the ballot in VA.

Is it the air or water, the schools, the fundamentlist persuasion or a combination of all that produces these less than desirable dummies from Texas who think they should be president? I don't believe W. Bush was a lot more endowed than Perry. So Perry figured he was as smart as Bush. That doesn't say much for either.

It's actually the money that funds their campaigns.

I imagine you are a Texan. Having seen Gov. Rick Perry's performances through out the campaign leading up to the Iowa caucus, I was inclined to write virtually everything you have written about him on this piece, but out of respect of being the Governor of a very big state like Texas, I waited to see if people were noting what I was observing in Rick Perry. I also waited because I really wanted to see what people were saying that: if this Governor of Texas comes into the race, that he would really shake things up. I really wanted to see what makes Perry tick. Oddly and very disappointingly, I kept my mouth ajar looking at Perry through out the campaign process, and see him going from one gaffe to another.
He gave me confidence though, that if he was able to make it to the Governor's mansion that anybody else could.

This is entire GOP. They prefer sloganeering over real substantive discussion and they seem to relish in it.

Gee, just recently on FOX News Goobernor Perry got the ringing endorsement of Steve Forbes. What happened? What could have gone wrong? How could Perry have lost? There must have been some Republican voter fruad.

Of all the GOP candidates for President, Rick Perry had the best ideas for the country, such as (a) make Congress a part-time occupation, (b) extract the energy that is right under our feet, and (c)--well, I cannot recall right now. Oh, yea, something about eliminating 3 federal agencies. Yes, yes, I know, he could only name two, but how many would Obama eliminate? Can anybody tell me? Come on, now. And, another thing about you Huffing Post guys, we Texans love Rick Perry and we want he back so we can keep electing him as Governor every time that he runs. As we have, election after election.

Take him back and you are welcome to him. Just wondering how the Houston Texans felt when Perry compared himself with a Denver quarterback. Both presidential candidate and Denver quarterback were highly overrated.

You want "he back?" I think Texans had better get rid of the fundamentalist right wing ideas in your school text books and add some language skills and proper use of english.

Perry said what like-minded TEA party conservatives did not say: "We're tired of big spending . . . on programs we don't like". He wasn't supposed to say, "on programs we don't like". This telling add-on was another "oops" moment for Rick Perry; and his TEA party supporters were not amused.

Nevertheless, we now know the TEA party movement has everything to do with "programs we don't like" and nothing do do with "big spending". It appears Rick Perry is too honest, too slow, or both! But it doesn't matter. He did far more than most to reveal the face of the TEA party movement.

"And if he doesn't know that, he is even stupider than he appeared during the debates." Yup, he proved today that he IS even stooopider than anyone thought possible with his announcement to carry on with his campaign. I wonder how he remembers to breath...or NOT breath when he swallows a swig of water. Texas only has one thing to say about Perry. Oops.

But the gaffe machine is sticking around for more. I wonder which of the late night comedians is funding this ongoing activity? Jay and Dave probably have enough money to fund through the end of January!!!

This guy let half of Texas burn. IQ tests should be required for all politicians. I'm not saying you need to be a genius but you can't be dumb as box of rocks.
08:20 PM on 01/04/2012
How about maybe also drug testing of all Republican governors? Crook Scott of Florida, Walker, Snyder, Kasich, LePage, Corbett, not to mention Chris Krispy-Kreme of NJ. Perry is just a pseudo-cowboy who is all jacket and no cattle. Way past time to put him out to pasture.
