We have the right to private property. But, in Christ, that right is a stewardship right. We "own" it but only within context of God being the true owner. Because of that our right to the use of our property is not absolute. It has limits. Limits prescribed by Christian ethics and our conscience. Additionally, we are called to respect the authority of the sovereign that rules our land. Now in ancient times that would have been a King. In America, the people are sovereign. And just as in the ancient world the King could choose to do things that Christians would need to respect - in America - the people get to choose our government. And our government (President, Congress, local officials) makes decisions about how we are to use and channel many of the resources of our society. We channel those resources towards the common defense (foreign policy and military) and the general welfare (education, health, and well being). In a democratic republic we can choose to do great and small things and ask the people to supply taxes to make it happen. In the long run, if the people support the things that are done - they will continue to support the elected public officials that are making these progressive investments (education, healthcare, social security, medicare, etc.). If the majority of the people do not think the taxes that they have to pay are worth what they are getting from their government, they will elect new representatives.

Glenn Beck quoted in Forbes Magazine:
"If you take what I say as gospel, you're an idiot."

It would be wise for Jim Wallis to say the same thing.
