Homosexuality and Nature

What's Your Reaction:

Last week I observed Pastor and author Joel Osteen on The View talking about Christianity. When questioned about gays by co-host Whoopi Goldberg, Osteen declared that his church welcomes them but that he felt the lifestyle was wrong and we should give to God our best. I'm not sure what he meant by that. Was he saying homosexuals were not God's best creation or that gay people should become straight to give their best to God?

Either way, as a gay Christian, I am offended. I believe that I am a child of God and that I was born a lesbian. Therefore, by being true to my self and my nature, I am giving my best to God.

I know Pastor Osteen would like to believe it is a choice to be gay. I disagree. Did he choose to be straight? Maybe for him it feels natural to be with a woman. For me it also feels natural to be with a woman. This is not a taste I acquired.

I was attracted to girls since the fourth grade. They say your true desires and instincts come out when you are young and innocent before the world tells you what you can and cannot do. I was also very interested in writing, a talent I have come back to later in my life. It was my first love even before music.

I digress. When I found myself dreaming about a third grade girl who played a mean piano I didn't suppress it or think of it as wrong. That is until I told my mom that I liked this girl and she said: "You mean you 'admire' her." That was my first clue that these types of tingling feelings for someone of my own sex were not the norm. It took many years and a lot of soul searching before I came out to myself and the world.

So what is normal? Speaking of nature, there are 1,500 species of animals that have practiced some form of homosexuality. Is all of nature sinful? Did not God create all creatures, great and small? Why doesn't Pastor Osteen go break up two female giraffes engaged in heavy petting and tell them they are sinning? While at it, he can tell them they are welcome in his church as long as they repent and change their bad behavior.

I would say no thank you, Pastor Joel. I would rather celebrate God with nature in all her glory.

For me (as a Christian), it's a simple "Would Christ..." question. Namely, would Christ exclude gays in any way, shape, or form?

Answer: absolutely not. Neither should we.

Pastor Osteen must think it's okay to ignore Christ's example of unlimited, inclusive, and unconditional love. And I suppose it is okay so long as he doesn't label himself a Christian.

Actually, it's not just religious doctrine that can lead to evil. Mao Tse Dong, Stalin, and Hitler were all pretty dedicated atheists and they killed millions of people. I think any dogma, religious or political, can be twisted to do wrong and to justify it.

True and they all seem to make homosexuals the enemy. Just wish people could live and let live. I stay out of their bedrooms and they should stay out of mine.

Yes,

Homosexuality is well documented in biology as well as human history. Tying these observations into some logic related to "God" is an exercise in futility. Religion does not subsist upon rational logic but upon true belief.

Perhaps Nobel laureate Stephen Weinberg phrased it best:

"Religion is an insult to human dignity. With or without it, you'd have good people doing good things and evil people doing bad things, but for good people to do bad things, it takes religion."

It always amazes me how threatening homosexuality is to many segments of our population, not just born-again Christians. For example, in countries such as Iran and Iraq, gay people are routinely tortured and killed with government sanction. Is it that many people are trying to eradicate any gay impulses in themselves by excoriating gays? Cerainly there are other sins such as cheating, stealing and cruelty that don't receive as much censor as homosexulaity.

As far as homosexuality in animals goes, I suppose Pastor Osteen would not condemn animals, since they are unaware of sinning.

I feel that what adults do in their bedrooms is their own business, as long as there is no force and no children are involved.

Remind me never to go to Iraq or Iran. I don't believe it is a sin, especially if you love your partner and have a committed relationship.

Joel Osteen makes a lot of money by cowtowing to his donors, whether he really believes anything he says or not. I'm a gay Christian and God never mentioned to me that I should be concerned about what Osteen thinks about me. Or any other preacher/priest/pope/minister. I have a direct line to God and he tells me to be the best gay man I can be. That's the only approval I need.

Thanks for that perspective. I just get a little annoyed sometimes at all the gay bashing I hear from some Christian leaders on TV talk shows. I felt I had to address it.

I've always had a problem with the description of homosexuality as "unnatural". It's a hollow argument that defies logic. Homosexuality has been around since the dawn of civilization, far longer than organized religion. Does that make Christians "unnatural"? And when you start comparing humanity to other animal species, suddenly the whole human race seems like an unnatural aberration. So focusing on one minor aspect of the human condition relative to other animals while ignoring the many behaviors that are uniquely human pretty much destroys the credibility of the idea that homosexuality is unnatural.

Only in America do we talk about homosexuality and abortion. If Americans only knew that the rest of the world is blissfully unaware of it's puritanical obsession with homosexuality. Who cares? If I was in a foxhole fighting for my life would I care if the guy next to me was gay? It reminds me of an old story I saw in a movie. A preist and a rabbi go to a boxing match and one the rabbi sees one fighter cross himself on his kness before the bell rings. The rabbi asks what does that mean. The preist replies not a goddamned thing if he can;t fight.

Hmmm, either a) the pastor is wrong and God created all of us the way we are (gay, straight, bi, trans, etc.) or b) God simply does not exist and we are merely a product of mother nature. Given the diversity that exist and nature and that homosexuality exist in nature, I believe b.
