Why Obama Was Interrupted in Los Angeles

What's Your Reaction:

President Obama was interrupted several times by GetEQUAL activists during a speech at a fundraiser for Senator Barbara Boxer in Los Angeles on Monday.

Activists shouted, "What about 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell?'" and "It's time for equality for all Americans."

At one point the President halted his speech to address the activists. He said, "Barbara and I are supportive of repealing 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell'."

David John Fleck, Dan Fotou, Laura Kanter, Zoe Nicholson and Michelle Wright were eventually escorted out of the fundraiser by security.

The President committed to repealing Don't Ask Don't Tell during his campaign, and renewed that campaign promise during this year's State of the Union Address. He said, "This year, I will work with Congress and our military to finally repeal the law that denies gay Americans the right to serve the country they love because of who they are."

The LGBT community is concerned that Don't Ask Don't Tell will not be repealed this year, as rumors abound that Congress does not plan to do so.

"We made it clear our community will hold accountable our President for unkept promises," Michelle Wright said in a statement. "Denying LGBT service members and personnel the ability to serve their country is unfair."

GetEQUAL is an LGBT organization that helped orchestrate Lt. Dan Choi's protest last month, when he and another officer chained themselves to the White House gate in protest against Don't Ask Don't Tell.

I can't recall an instance where people were protesting something - and the person they were directing their protests towards was not only on their side, but had actually started working on the issue...I don't think their protest worked very well this time...

Some ugly homophobia on display here from peopel portraying themselves as 'liberals' and obama supporters.

Look at the posts by callingemout and shamroc02. They deride the notion that LGBT civil rights are somehow like earlier civil/voting rights movements. They also are conveniently ignorant that earlier movements were not uniformly meek and polite, so they can label LGBT protesters as selfish fanatics.

I think MoeB speaks eloquently to the subject as a member of the LGBT community. In stark contrast, I feel you represent the cause in a hostile, dishonest and f@natical manner that is a detriment in representing this what is a worthy cause.

You mean you love the quiet apologist for the political establishment. You equate "fanatic" with being uncompromising about one's civil rights. You would have labelled abolitionists, suffragettes, African-American civil rights protesters with the same label.

You also appear to equate "dishosest" with criticism of Obama or did I just imagine the failure to prosecute torturers, the escalation of the war in Afghanistan, the continuation of executive secrecy, Obama's open stance against gay marriage, his deal with Big Pharma to kill the public option...the list of his 'accomplishments' goes on. He has done some positive things but they are usually weak relative to major issues.

When LGBT Americans have basic non-discrimination protection in employment, housing and adoption as well as marriage equality then you can moan at people for being "hostile". You want us to quietly accept a second-class citizen status because your homophobia has been obvious throughout this thread.

I also find it amusing that you keeping trying to avoid moderation by typing "@" instead of "a" in "fanatic" even though this is a fully moderated article.

And that is the point. At the rate his and congresses approval ratings are going, we will be lucky to hold on to a majority after the November elections. And if, by chance we do, then we will have the General elections in two more years. Should we be patient, then? It is always going to be something, isn't it. But, hey, you got yours. Thats really all that counts, isn't it?

Besides. You can't take away rights we've never had anyway.

^ Like they held accountible previous Presidents? Like Clinton for signing the bill in the first place or Bush for doing nothing to help the cause? Give me a break..a lot of them barely even supported Obama throughout the election, so the fact they assume their cause should be number one is laughable.

With that said, I do hope they will repeal DADT..because I support the repeal..but the disrespect of this President by interrupting his speech, not so much.
07:39 PM on 04/20/2010
Well if it was a National Speech then maybe I could understand what you wrote, But it was for God Sake a Fundraiser and if you can't call your party out then whats the point in supporting it. He after all the President was the one who sad hold his feet to the Fire not us so they did!

The protesters were right to make their point.
They were not right to be rude, obnoxious and disruptive. President Obama has plenty of issues to deal with and getting bills through the senate without a filibusterer is one of his hurdles.

So .. If the protesters had brought up the issue, then cheered when Obama pointed out he was on board with the issue, that would have been positive.

Continuing to protest and disrupt when they got what they came for was a turnoff. For me, it placed gay issues a notch down on the list of priorities. Fortunately, I know that most gays are not so obnoxious.

"For me, it placed gay issues a notch down on the list of priorities."

So, the actions of a few caused you to lose respect for the issue itself?

That's very troubling, and quite sad, actually.

Gay-rights are not exactly an issue I hold too dear, but I agree that DADT is a joke and needs to be done away with. While I am in support of gay rights ( they should have just as much rights to miserable marriages as anyone) this little act is a huge turnoff for me. Sorry, LGBT, community, that is just the way it is, you lose me and many others like me when you pull these stunts, especially when I see this president as doing the best he possibly can on these issues. Tomorrow it will probably change, but right now I am so pissed at this snit that I could give a ratsass about your issues.
04:47 PM on 04/20/2010
Oh my, your view of gay-rights has decended from "not exactly an issue (you) hold dear" to couldn't "give a ratsass"!

We'll try to keep these "huge turnoff's" to minimum in the future and act extra hard to keep you turned on by, well, just "pulling" better stunts!

Thanks for the heads up!

Your STUNT was an epic FAIL. No one could even tell what they were yelling yesterday. Sounded like a screetching cat with no manners. You all are JOE WILSON class towards the President of the United States.

This issue is so mportant. Where the hell were you for the past 8 years with this stuff? Attention whores who have no respect.
05:38 PM on 04/20/2010
I agree with pecosdog. Over the years, I too have supported gay rights with my actions, money and vote. But after the stunt DADT pulled last night and the disrespect they showed the President all I can say is good-bye.

Some of you people he give you inch you go a mile, next we should ask who was they pandering to, we don't think it was for the DADT, we was happy when the President Called them out, that was not the Place for that, these (5) people make it bad for the DADT, when there are a lot of people support, but last night just made us anger, it really did make sense, the President was right you're yelling at the wrong person, it congress where you should be address, and McCain and some others who is trying to Block DADT bill and the President is right Barbara Boxer, didn't vote on that DADT, you people are out there, yelling and Screaming and Protesting for things you don't know, you're selfish, greedy, spoiled and hateful, bitting the hand that really feed you, we was happy when the Prez., Challenge you cowards. We saw one sign saying don't rise our taxes, this is when we said where do you find these people, do they really know what they are Protesting, he gave them the biggest tax credits and they still complainting, maybe they need to get a taste of the 3rd World country.

Seems to me the protesters were on point. It is no different than what we did in pursuing civil rights. They did not disrspect Obama, but they also made their point. They are tired of waiting. What's wrong with expressing that?

The sit-down-and-be-respectful people for get that women's suffrage, the labour movement, civil rights for minorities, etc. were all won with some loud, in-your-face tactics. Waiting-your-turn just means waiting to be treated with dignity.

…Nothing wrong with expressing that, except that you are doing it in the wrong places. Like the President said, or something to the effect that "I am for repealing DADT, and so is Barbara; your energy should be better directed against the oppositionâ€. You don't shoot yourself in the leg to make you go faster; it just does not make sense.
This should not be healthcare all over again--we should quit inflicting damage on ourselves and our ability to accomplish our goals.

And I guess you believe no one is denying gay men and lesbians the right to marry - they just have to marry someone of the opposite sex, right? You're either intentionally obtuse, or too ignorant to be reasoned with.

This is the left, not the right, we don't all march in lock-step but we do march in the same direction of freedom for all, no matter your sex, race, religion or sexual orientation.

Not really sure what your point is here, sounds a bit off-topic, are you speaking of the open carry protest? Or whatever "they" were protesting the other day.

And no, you do not need to remind me but of course, if you feel inclined (you must) go right ahead.

But again, What???
03:02 PM on 04/20/2010
President Obama actually asked these "activists" if they wanted to come up on stage and speak instead last night. They sure didn't have a backbone then. If you have time to complain, you have the right to help. President Obama was at a fundraiser for Barbara Boxer. Barbara Boxer is not responsible for DADT at all. They are tea party crazy.

Most Pro Gay rights President this WORLD has ever seen and they target HIM instead of the people against him. Insanity. Only looking for their own self interest and press.

I agree. Over the past several years, I've noticed a pattern: whenever there's a vital issue before the nation, the LGBT community decides it's the perfect time to try to steal the spotlight. It gets a little old after awhile...

In forty years, the Stonewall riots in 1969 to today, gay men and lesbians have gone from possibly the most despised minority in this country to where we are now and we did that in the face of obstacles I wonder if you can even imagine like say actually biblical prohibitions and the AIDS crisis!

That pattern you've noticed, looks like its working.
03:36 PM on 04/20/2010
Even though the President asked them to come up to the podium, they were not allowed by those people who actually forced them out of the theater - twice. Also, those that spoke up DID help by buying the expensive tickets to be able to be there. And no one is saying that they will NOT support Boxer or the President, they are simply trying to bring up the discussion that the President has not done what he promised.

Also, apparently there is a letter that was sent to families of the military asking them for their opinion on Dont Ask Dont Tell (from the government). What does that have to do with repealing it. You repeal it based on principles not because military families are for it or against it. Was there such a letter when the military was desegregated.

The people who spoke up arent "targetting" him, they are simply making sure he remembers the promises he made.
04:47 PM on 04/20/2010
They acted like FOOLS. I was there. He's not an idiot. They don't have to act like crazy teabaggers paranoid he will forget.

Obama has always included the LGBT in his agenda and if they can't act like ADULTS and help move his ENTIRE agenda forward....they can take a hike for all I care.

They bought the expensive tickets to disrespect the President and get kicked out? That makes a lot of sense. Obama has brought DADT to Congress, they are working on repealing it...what more do they want? they are upset because its not going by the timetable they want? What have they done to help contribute to anything but themselves? This President is walking through the fire for this ungreatful nation and this is the thanks he gets? He hasn't forgotten anything because people wont allow him to...dont you worry, unlike previous Presidents this President will actually be held accountible for every single thing he says....he is not going to forget about anything, because he gets reminded of the 1 million things he has to worry about every day.
03:01 PM on 04/20/2010
Clearly, DADT is the most important issue facing the President today. As far as I'm concerned, the President should set aside his entire first term agenda and do everything he can to make sure that gay Americans get absolutely everything they want--RIGHT NOW. TODAY. Financial reform? Meh. Who cares? Climate change? Minor stuff. The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan? Hardly worth worrying about. Allowing gays to serve openly in the military? Now THAT'S important.
