Racial Prejudice in 2012

Posted: 10/28/2012 1:08 am

The 2012 presidential election campaign has been disappointing. Perhaps the most disappointing thing about this election is that were President Barack Obama white it is likely he would be on his way to a landslide victory.

President Obama inherited a disastrous mess. When he entered office the economy was shrinking at 9 percent annually due to the Bush Recession. About 800 thousand Americans were losing jobs each month. The banking system was on the verge of collapse, the housing market was a disaster, and the American car industry was dying. The country was engaged in two difficult and costly wars, both in lives and resources, with no end in sight. Meanwhile, Osama bin Laden, the leader of Al Qaeda, and mastermind of the worst attack on U.S. soil, continued to plot against America and its allies.

In his inaugural speech, at the U.S. Capitol before nearly 2 million people, the president said, "On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord." But, inside the Capitol, Republicans met and formulated a plan to obstruct, deny and delay the president's agenda. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell would later publicly state that making President Obama a one-term president, not the economy, was the number one priority of his party.

The new president, facing fierce partisan opposition, signed into law the Recovery Act, a.k.a. the stimulus package. Although it was smaller than he originally proposed, most economists credit it with righting the stalling economy. Even Representative Paul Ryan requested stimulus money to help businesses in his district. The president also signed tough banking reform legislation to assure a similar crisis would not occur. He enacted the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act that assures fair pay for women. He bailed out the American auto companies over the objections of many Republicans, including Governor Mitt Romney, who wrote in a New York Times op-ed piece that they should be allowed to go bankrupt. The auto bailout saved one million jobs, and now the industry is vibrant again.

The president's signature legislative achievement, the Affordable Health Care Act (Obamacare) will make health care more affordable and accessible to all Americans, and protect consumers from abuses by insurance companies. For instance, no longer can insurance companies deny people health care benefits because they have a pre-existing condition. More importantly, 40 million uninsured Americans will be covered and the government will realize $1 trillion in health care savings over the next decade, according to its sponsors. .

But Republicans have used Obamacare (rhymes with Romneycare) as a major rallying cry against the president, falsely charging it is a government take over of health care, that it would restrict an individual's choices, and that it would set up death panels. While they offered no credible alternatives, they demonized the president as a socialist.

The president had promised to end the war in Iraq, and he did. But Republicans were vociferous in their criticism, saying he withdrew too early. The president promised a military build up in Afghanistan, where the war was nearly in its tenth year, and he did. The president also set a deadline of June 2014 for the withdrawal of U.S. combat troops from that country. But Republicans criticized the president for announcing a deadline. And just last week candidate Mitt Romney announced at the third debate that he agreed with the president's deadline after all.

The president made getting Osama bin Laden a top priority early on in his administration. Bin Laden had eluded capture for nearly a decade, and was a low priority for both President George Bush and candidate Romney. But in May 2011, U.S. forces killed the world's most heinous terrorist leader in Pakistan. The president took a huge political risk by ordering the killing, but now Republicans claim that anyone would have done the same thing.

The president has had some missteps during his first term. The U.S. economy is still sluggish and too many people remain unemployed. But the world is a different place today than it was in the early 1980's, when President Ronald Reagan revived a bad U.S. economy. Economic growth in China and India has slowed; much of Europe is still in a recession. Nonetheless, under President Obama the U.S. economy has enjoyed 31 straight months of jobs growth and unemployment is at its lowest point, 7.8 percent, since he took office.

At the Democratic Convention, President Bill Clinton said, "No president, not me, not any of my predecessors, could have repaired all of the damage he found in just four years." When one considers the animus and vitriol that has roiled the American political scene, stirred by Republicans and Tea Party loyalists, it is a wonder that the man who called for "unity of purpose" has succeeded at all.

Mr. Obama has been labeled "the food stamp president" and an "anti-colonialist" by leading Republicans. He has repeatedly been treated with unprecedented disrespect, including on the floor of the House of Representatives. His place of birth has been constantly questioned, as have his academic records. About a third of all Republicans think the president is a Muslim and not a Christian. Most recently, when General Colin Powell, a leading Republican, war hero and African American, announced his thoughtful endorsement for the president's reelection, right wing critics sniped. Former Vermont Governor John Sununu, and chief Romney surrogate, said, "Well, I think when you have somebody of your own race that you're proud of being president of the United States, I applaud Colin for standing with him."

On Saturday, the Associated Press released a poll that found, "51 percent of Americans now express explicit anti-black attitudes, compared with 48 percent in a similar 2008 survey." According to AP, "Overall, the survey found that by virtue of racial prejudice, President Obama could lose 5 percentage points off his share of the popular vote in his Nov. 6 contest against Republican challenger Mitt Romney." Racial prejudice actually increased in America over the past four years with an African American in the White House, a president who has rarely raised the issue of race.

Americans should vote for the candidate who they believe will be the best president. But to use race as a factor would only reward those who have divided the nation by using fear and hatred to achieve their political agenda.

How can the majority of americans be racist when the majority vote in a black president? that makes no sense. Obama will not win not because of his color but because he made promises he did not keep.Obama and Romney have no integrity and that is a fact.Look at both of their records.Obama for the patriot act, monsanto a huge contributor, wall street bailout, All the troops are to come home immediately you can take that to the bank he said and then deploys a 140,000 troops to Afghanistan, spent over 2 trillion first few years in office. These are facts and Obama and Romney both have no care in true change both almost the same.So do you vote for the lesser of two evils well then you are still voting evil in to office. If you bought a car you would want your money back if the sales guy lied to you and gave you a car with a blown engine so you avoid that head ache by looking for a honest person who is going to be accountable for what they sell you.Take a look at Gary Johnson someone with integrity and see what he is about and if you can honestly still vote for Obama or Romney then that is your choice.

I read the full research report & the survey which actually found results that are different from the AP summary cited above. Actually, the found that only Republicans in the past two years have increased levels of racism. The HuffPost should do a story about that as well! https://www.impartial-review.com/stories/racism-increased-among-republicans-in-the-past-two-years-press-misreports-story

This is an unbiased breakdown of the true state of this country. Too many white Americans don't want to face up to it and, instead, continue to drink the kool aid distributed to them by those who pledged to oppose any efforts of the President, even if they helped the country. Now, those so-called leaders want voters to ignore what has been successful, despite their efforts to block these actions, and use race-baiting innuendos to achieve their stated goal to make President Obama a one-term President. Wake up people! Stop being the pawns by those seeking to regain the power to keep you under their boots while they force you to live off the crumbs they leave behind.

I gave seen it on TV with news coverages, and I have heard it spoken.

Most repubs I know are voting for Romney for one key reason.....he is white.

Romney's plan and stand on issues are mute. They want Romney because they want a white man in the white house again.

Yes, many Americans still remain unemployed, however, the majority of you completely skip the part in the article where they address that when Obama took office the statistics were even worse and our country was on its way into another depression. Now why was that? Because of the former president, Bush. When Obama entered office he had a lotos Bush's mistakes to correct before he could move on to the promises he made us. If it was not for Bush's mistakes that needed to be corrected our employment rate would be drastically higher and other promises made would have happened. Obama is working the right way, however, by putting Romney in office we are just reverting back to the same that Bush ran this country and we all know how that turned out.

Since FDR no white president has been re-elcted with numbers like this. Unemployement 7.8% but un truth is much higher. Average pay for middle class down 5%. Prices of everything up but the value of your home. If you teach students I hope they do not read this article. You try to blame failure of policy on race. When one race votes 95% for a canidate is that racial motivated. Playing the race card has become a politicial chip to play anytime things are not going the way progressives want them. Is that what you are teach the children? It is a sad thing when professors teach student what to think not how to think.

?eo?Did you say if Obama was white he'd be on his way to a landslide victory? When do you plan to return to your home planet?

Millions more Americans are living below the poverty line than when Obama took office. Median family income is down by thousands of dollars. Facts from the US Bureau of the Census website, and readily available to verify. A majority of Americans say they do NOT want Obamacare, yet it is being forced on them. Our business tax rate is over twice what it is in our neighboring country, Canada. Where would YOU open a new business? We're being inundated with swarms of illegals and Obama wants to give them driver's licenses, amnesty ahead of people who have applied LEGALLY to come here, and preferential college admissions over the sons and daughters of taxpaying citizens.

I don't care if Obama is purple with green polka dots. His four years in office have been a disaster.

I think regardless of race or gender, most republicans would try to defeat democrats. I also doubt any democrats voted republican because of race. A choice is clear between the two party platforms. Whatever one voters choose, I think it has less to do about race, and more to do about social and economic issues that concern them. I am not surprised that the election is so close, but it is not about race, it is more than that. I think the high unemployment rate and large federal deficit has people concerned. In terms of foreign policy, social issues and the envirinment

bye the way, you will find out the jobless rate is like 23 % not 7.8, what a farce, there are so many people who just ran out of unemployment and are now not being counted, this is a Jack a way to measure how many are unemployed, there are so many people who move back with relatives or shelters or somewhere not being counted, do you know that being unemployed for over six months is now being counted against you. so how can these people ever become employed again, there are so few jobs and so many people, its pitiful, they way things are, companies are looking for reasons for people to be disqualified, because of the unbelievable numbers of applicants, people are resorting to two to three part time jobs, to make ends meet if they can find them.

Racism in America is like a persistent pimple on the face of our nation. When it's invisible, it's just building up under the surface. When it becomes visible, we try to hide it, mask it and sterilize it. But inevitably it bursts, which is never pretty. And then the cycle reboots.

You are so full it, people don't like his jimmy Carter like White House, if he was like Reagan we would vote for him, we don't like his policies got it. nothing to do with his color. pure and simple, being black isn't the issue, being close to socialist is. you want socialism go to Russia or China, don't try and change us, go join them.

“The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president,” GOP Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (KY). There you have it.

Oh, let's not forget about GOP leaders (including Mitt 'Pho'ney) refusing to confront birther's and muslim accusations used by anti-BO conspirators against him.

This is the first time in our history we have had a person of color become President. I don't know if the venom would have been as deadly if Clinton had won. This brought out the worst in those of us who are not ready to accept the people of color on a level playing field. I hope to live long enough to see a woman become President as well. Why should males have a monopoly on the job?

I want you Obama bashers, racists and people without fairness or reason to read the following excerpt from above. It is true and even the most racist of them with all their money know it,if Barack Obama were white he would be on his way to a landslide victory.

Not only is Joe Peyronnin is correct, the media has committed journalistic malpractice once again as in the case of the Iraq war and Health care debate where they highlighted the lies and promoted the falsehoods daily, they have failed to call out the racism and hatred spewed by this ungodly, sick republican party and has let Romney and Boehner blame the president 100% for the slow recovery while blocking all his efforts for the past 4 years, without stating this fact.It is an injustice.

This president bis right and win or lose it will be proven so.

Ahhh...and Joe Peyronnin whips out the "racism" card once again....yet so many wonder why the healing has taken so long? My opinion is; as it relates to any curing wound: If you keep picking the scab off the wound or keep scraping it, you can virtually keep it from healing indefinitely. Folks like you Joe, Al Sharpten, Jesse Jackson, Jerimiah Wright, Malcolm X, et al....benefit from the free-flowing blood (of others). So, unless "We The People" learn to recognize your dirty little game...and refuse to play....the bleeding will persist. Just my humble opinion....besides, Obama is half white, so which is being discriminated against? I forget....
