On Civility and Public Discourse

Posted: 03/ 2/2012 11:50 pm

A message from Georgetown President John J. DeGioia on civility and public discourse, in light of recent comments about Georgetown law student,Sandra Fluke

Dear Members of the Georgetown Community:

There is a legitimate question of public policy before our nation today. In the effort to address the problem of the nearly fifty million Americans who lack health insurance, our lawmakers enacted legislation that seeks to increase access to health care. In recent weeks, a question regarding the breadth of services that will be covered has focused significant public attention on the issue of contraceptive coverage. Many, including the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, have offered important perspectives on this issue.

In recent days, a law student of Georgetown, Sandra Fluke, offered her testimony regarding the proposed regulations by the Department of Health and Human Services before a group of members of Congress. She was respectful, sincere, and spoke with conviction. She provided a model of civil discourse. This expression of conscience was in the tradition of the deepest values we share as a people. One need not agree with her substantive position to support her right to respectful free expression. And yet, some of those who disagreed with her position -- including Rush Limbaugh and commentators throughout the blogosphere and in various other media channels -- responded with behavior that can only be described as misogynistic, vitriolic, and a misrepresentation of the position of our student.

In our vibrant and diverse society, there always are important differences that need to be debated, with strong and legitimate beliefs held on all sides of challenging issues. The greatest contribution of the American project is the recognition that together, we can rely on civil discourse to engage the tensions that characterize these difficult issues, and work towards resolutions that balance deeply held and different perspectives. We have learned through painful experience that we must respect one another and we acknowledge that the best way to confront our differences is through constructive public debate. At times, the exercise of one person's freedom may conflict with another's. As Americans, we accept that the only answer to our differences is further engagement.

In an earlier time, St. Augustine captured the sense of what is required in civil discourse: "Let us, on both sides, lay aside all arrogance. Let us not, on either side, claim that we have already discovered the truth. Let us seek it together as something which is known to neither of us. For then only may we seek it, lovingly and tranquilly, if there be no bold presumption that it is already discovered and possessed."

If we, instead, allow coarseness, anger -- even hatred -- to stand for civil discourse in America, we violate the sacred trust that has been handed down through the generations beginning with our Founders. The values that hold us together as a people require nothing less than eternal vigilance. This is our moment to stand for the values of civility in our engagement with one another.

For over three decades, John J. DeGioia has helped to define and strengthen Georgetown University as a premier institution for education and research. Since graduating from the University in 1979, he has served both as a senior administrator and as a faculty member. On July 1, 2001, he became Georgetown's 48th president.

As a member of the Georgetown community, I wrote an article about this. I love the call to civility, but we must not forget how uncivil and harmful the Catholic birth control position is across the globe: http://open.salon.com/blog/bjorn_philip_beer/2012/03/09/a_hard_pill_to_swallow_catholic_contraception_policy

I understand the debate. I feel the ONLY time contraception should be covered by Health care is when there is a medical necessity. It should NOT be covered as a means of someone's decision to have sex not resulting in pregnancy. Health insurance should be for health purposes. My access to a birth control device simply to avoid pregnancy should be the expense of the persons engaging in the sex.

Interesting, it seems like people on the left are always crying for civility in the wake of some outrageous statement from a righty. Bu the people crying for civility don't seem particualrly interested in reigning in their own team's lack of civility. Nobody batted an eye at Maxine Waters calling republicans "demons". The left hurls charges of racism around with abandon without any regard to the hurt caused.

So stuff your pleas for civilty. Nobody is buying it.

You ever hear the old saying ... it's better to be quiet and be thought a fool rather than speak up and remove all doubt.
04:37 PM on 03/05/2012
Mark Twain said that. There is much to be said of both sides, but the Republicans in this day and age are the clear winners for folks who promote lies, hate speech, and stupidity. I said that!

So stuff your dread against civility. Nobody is listening.

Ms. Fluke should do a little research to find either free contraception or buy generics. She does have choices. No one is denying her. (Sounds like in more ways than one...)
She seems to think it's a right to get free contraception, it's not, it's her choice.
This whole thing stems from Obamacare's blatent infrigment on religious rights. Now I hear that free contraception is a good cost savings measure. What's next, the State to dictate how many kids a woman can have? China has forced abortions, are we going down that path?

actually it's the Church that wants to tell women they must have as many children as they can bear. You've got it a$$ backwards.

Keep religion in the church and out of the public square and there won't be an issue. That was the intent of the 1st Amendment. Go read the Federalist Papers ... it's all there.

I find it funny you use St Augustine. I have all the Great Books of the Western world volumes that is the only volume I missed. I have looked at other people's volume. I don't miss not having it. That guy unlike Thomas Aquinas is illiterate and his ridiculous anti-civilization diatribe don't give me good news. And I don't accept prophets that with hold questions. So He might work for you "Good News" Without Question types but me. I say meh Not interested.

Tell Limbaugh's advertisers: Stop supporting sexist attacks on women.

http://act.credoaction.com/campaign/ads_limbaugh/?rc=LA_Rush_03022012_ad4

Since we started our campaign, several major advertisers have pulled their support from the Rush Limbaugh Show,1 the most popular commercial radio show in the country and a key piece of the rightwing message machine. The backlash has been so great that even after doubling down in defense of his reprehensible comments, Limbaugh was forced to issue a rare -- and totally insufficient -- apology stating "my choice of words was not the best."2

Rush Limbaugh is clearly feeling the pressure of our activism. But his so-called apology isn't nearly enough. After his long history of being supported by advertisers while making offensive and irresponsible statements, he shouldn't get yet another chance. This should be the last straw.

He still retains major national advertisers who continue to fund his misogynistic rants. We need your help to build on our momentum and deal Republicans a major setback in their war against women.

Tell Rush Limbaugh's advertisers: Stop Supporting Rush Limbaugh's attacks on women.

Every American enjoys the right to free speech, but that doesn't mean that advertisers who are accountable to their customers should pay people like Rush Limbaugh who make such appallingly hateful and sexist comments.

Rush's remaining advertisers need to hear from us loud and clear -- if you advertise on Rush Limbaugh, you are supporting his reprehensible attacks on women.

Thank you for joining CREDO in taking action.

What's "respectful" about one American (with enough resources to attend a leading university) DEMANDING that other Americans (many of us without such resources, or struggling to pay our student loans along with the huge burden of deductions from our paychecks) pay for her sexual needs? That's DISRESPECTFUL to our nation in the utmost. Rush made a big mistake calling Ms. Fluke a "slut" -- she's just another Gimmie-crat, that's all.
03:08 PM on 03/04/2012
How is that any different from you 'demanding' that my tax dollars and contributions to insurance premiums cover your heart disease (you ate those burgers) your diabetic supplies (you drank that soda) and your pregnancy and delivery costs (you chose not to use contraception)?

It's too easy to point a finger and call a woman a slut for having a sex life, but we all pay for one another's lifestyle choices in the end.

she didn;t do what you accuse her of. If you read the original article it had nothing to do with sex. The video is also available., That's the spin Rush put on it. She was not even talking about herself in front of the board
12:25 AM on 03/05/2012
She was demanding free contraception -- if not specifically for her, for other Georgetown students.

What he did was hurt his cause, which is to sell advertising space and make money. He also, by the way, exposed Ms. Fluke for what she is - a university student who is well spoken and civil -and- elevated her to national notoriety along with marring his cause with his uncivil behavior. I may be conservative but Mr. Limbaugh most certainly doesn’t speak for me.

Mr. Georgetown President, you're not getting a pass. After all the flowery comments, your organization still denies contraception to the women working in your university. As Miss Fluke so courageously pointed out, one of her friends developed ovarian cysts and was unable to get medical help, all because your institution and your religion discriminated women. Limbaugh makes incendiary comments for a living, but women suffer from real consequences because of you everyday.
12:49 PM on 03/04/2012
No one was denied contraceptives. Ms. Fluke was simply asked to pay for it. Why should others be forced to pay for her recreation?

I have never seen such mindless parroting of lies in my entire life. It seems none of you Rush supporters even tactfully know what she said. You just keep repeating and repeating the lies Rush told. Not a one of you has even bothered to read her statement and see what she was actually saying.

Freedom is Fundamental
10:27 AM on 03/04/2012
DeGioia’s entire comment is based upon and summarized in a few of his more revealing statements,

“We must return to the values that hold us together.â€, which seeks to utilize this minor issue to elevate civility over the ONLY issue that has ever held us together - Freedom.

“As Americans, we accept that the only answer to our differences is further engagement. “ which deceptively and disingenuously seeks to elevate democracy in general and social democracy in particular over the Freedom upon which this nation was founded.

“The values that hold us together as a people require nothing less than eternal vigilance. “ has been systematically and thoroughly violated over the last 75 yrs. - as an ever growing social democratic state has been incrementally ratcheted into place; because - with every step of its advance, the most fundamental value that once held us together - Freedom - has been diminished to the point of extinction by the collectivist tyranny of this collectivist state.

Worse, no value other than Freedom is capable of holding us together, so DeGioia’s comments amount to nothing more than re-arranging the deck chairs on our sinking ship of state - when only repairing the gigantic hole of Freedom in our hull can save it.

From a practical standpoint the problem on any disagreement on policy here stems from health insurance being tied to employment, which then according to the GT president and others allows control of the insurnace to the employer (for religious or moral objections of some sort). It is clear this is an awful idea in genreal, but particularly bad in the current atmosphere.

Lets make sure that Limbaugh fades to oblivion , an answer to a trivia question. The talking heads and the pundits of all manner are to blame for the dischord also. Information , and disscussion are now seen as a commodity, and have been priced off the market for the vast majority of us. The imaginary cornucopia of choice leads to the profits of the information corporations. The Prophets of Profit.
