I have been asking artist friends to send me images of their recent paintings along with photos of their palettes and palette tables. The paintings speak for themselves, and the palettes give a glimpse into the studio. As you click through the blog, you will see that each painting is followed by the palette of the artist who created it. There is some information about their materials and working methods too.

Stay tuned: I'll be posting many more of these painting/palette combos soon - John Seed

Author's Note: I have just learned that Nathan Oliveira, whose work appears on this blog passed away this weekend. I will be posting a memorial blog very soon.

Interesting selection of art, artists and palettes - especially the art. Hope to see more of this.

As a painter, I also find this kind of information very interesting, especially from the artists who tell us exactly what brands and colors of paint they use plus mediums and brushes. I look forward to reading more postings in this series.

For my palette surface I use an old glass coffee table top on a wheeled stand.

I'm sorry to read about Nathan Oliveira. There is an elegant simplicity and sense of light in his figure painting shown.

Thanks smallberries. Nathan had been making art for so many years, and his knowledge of the figure and sense of light had evolved. He once showed me a drawing of Mickey Mouse he did as a boy and Mickey had a kind of elegant figure: it was already an "Oliveira."

John, thank you for this wonderful article and beautiful images. I look forward to more! I especially love to look at the artist's palettes and practices being a painter myself. I find paint to be enormously seductive. Especially oil paint, which has so much freight attached to it. I love the material of it - how it moves with the palette knife, it's smell mixed with the mediums, the thick and oily rich colors . . . Keep it coming!!!

Jean, I will. I have a lot more photos in my email. I think a group of palettes and paintings by portrait artists will be next if I can get my act together.
