The 83rd Annual Academy Award telecast was so flat, I expected Rachel Dratch to show up on stage at any moment in full Debbie Downer regalia followed by an orchestral "womp waaah."

But, you don't need to hear another bad Oscar review. Everyone seems to be throwing hosts James Franco and Anne Hathaway under the bus for their forced, uninspired emcee duties last weekend, and rightfully so. The duo brought little to the table in a flat, ho-hum telecast that served up more yawns than yucks -- saved only by a few winning speeches and a wandering Kirk Douglas.

Tapping two of the brightest young stars to host the event was a clever marketing move to try to lure new, younger viewers to watch a long, drawn-out telecast, but Franco and Hathaway were miscast. Given the low ratings (especially in the key 18-49 demographic -- down 12 percent from last year) and universal panning, it's clear the rebranding concept crashed and burned. While I highly suspect an old Oscar favorite will be brought back next year (think Billy Crystal after that standing O he received Feb. 27) or a safe pick like Tina Fey or Steve Martin, I'm holding out hope the Academy will think outside the box once again.

Justin Timberlake should host the Oscars -- he's a proven entertainer who always is reliable for a laugh. The multi-talented star has shown time and time again that comedy comes just as easily to him as dancing and singing does. He has flexed his comedic chops in his various appearances on Saturday Night Live (Google "Homelessville") and has already shined as host of another awards show -- the 2008 ESPYs.

Time and again, Timberlake has shown he doesn't mind being the butt of a joke or delivering a punchline. That said, I'm sure the bankable music and now motion picture star can deliver a pitch perfect monologue (Franco and Hathaway's fell flat) and a song and dance routine that would rival those precious Crystal medleys. More importantly, his quick wit and improvisation prowess would prevent the show from hitting any bumps along the way. That's one key component that has been missing, not just last Sunday but over the past few years.

The Oscars are always long and frontrunners usually win, but when you had a host like Crystal or even Chris Rock or Jon Stewart, you were guaranteed a few unscripted gems to pop up throughout the night. Who can forget Rock's wisecrack about Jude Law being in every movie (and all of them bad) and Crystal spewing Jack Palance jokes all night long after the City Slicker Oscar winner accepted his award and did one-armed push-ups? If Crystal was hosting this year, I'm sure he would've run wild on Melissa Leo's F-bomb. Ditto for Stewart and Rock. I suspect Timberlake would've as well.

Timberlake is an entertainer in the truest sense. We got a taste of what he could do this year watching him present an Oscar. He cheerfully mocked Douglas with a "you know" before announcing an Oscar winner and flawlessly delivered the line "I'm Banksy." The latter had me laughing even though the joke got overplayed in the Twitterverse.

In any event, it's not too late for Oscar to get its sexy back. Timberlake would present some much-needed spontaneity, fun and excitement. Oh, and yeah... younger viewers. Who's with me?

Timberlove aside, way bad call Jon. The Awards needs a person fast on their feet/tongue and for my money someone with a writing background. THAT MC could change the lame lines Anne and James were given. Tina would be my #1; she's bright, a gifted writer and crossover TV/Movies.
Let me repeat; she's a good writer of comedic material. Justin is Justin. nothing more. He'd be at the mercy of writers as were Anne and James.

A Fey/Baldwin would be oh so potentially great. And frankly it IS time for another female. You can't tell me Justin and Brittany or Jessica would work. Let pros between 30 and 60 years old do it. Billy was great, but too obvious to bring him back (act of desperation).

Disagree. And I agree Billy WAS great. His time has come and gone. Which Brittany or Jessica do you mean? I'm fine with Tina Fey but think if you put together a strong writing staff anyone can shine. The writing was flat this year, too. Justin's 30.

Omg, what a terrible terrible idea. As rhe awards get further and further from the celebration of film and film performance, the idea of having a snarky singer host the awards is like asking reality tv hosts to emcee a film show. Stop the bleeeding

Speaking as someone not particularly a fan of Justin Timberlake, I agree. All of us live blogging along with HuffPo said Justin and Mila Kunis should be brought back as hosts next year.

I totally agree. I'm not a huge fan of his music, but he is incredibly funny. I like how he always seems relaxed. And you're right about the improv stuff; Anne and Franco were like deer in headlights. Anne flubbed her line once and basically said, "whoopsies! flubbed my line!"...like a 5th grader at a Christmas pageant. I'm team Timberlake, for sure.

A Brilliant Suggestion, one I thought of myself. Justin Timberlake brilliantly hosted the 2008 ESPY Awards and most importantly was able to make jokes about all of the big ego athletes in the room without offending anyone and still be funny! Now that he is an actor, he could do the same for the Oscars. I vote Justin hosts next year's Oscars!!!!!!!!!!!

What about Wanda Sykes. Saw her on Ellen the other day and she was amazing! I think she could really carry the Oscars on her own.

"... when you had a host like Crystal or even Chris Rock or Jon Stewart, you were guaranteed a few unscripted gems to pop up throughout the night."

And what do we learn from that? Maybe that this is a job for a professional comedian-MC, not an actor or a singer. A good actor's training and innate skills are diametrically opposed to those of a good MC--they are two completely different crafts, and it's an insult to professional comedians to think that an actor, or pop star, with a nice face and a good sense of humor can do their job. An actor like Alec Baldwin is the exception that proves the rule.

"I'm holding out hope the Academy will think outside the box once again."
For heaven's sake, WHY? I'd rather be inside the box with a pro like Jon Stewart any day.

They should just make Stewart host for life and be done with it. He knows how to work an audience, he knows how to pace a show and time a gag, he can ad lib with anyone, he understands the workings of television, and he has no connection to the movie industry--which I think is a good thing in this job.

I was thinking Wanda Sykes would be a good option too

Justin Timberlake? I don't know about that. Jimmy Fallon? Possibly, he is doing some pretty funny things on his show, but I don't see ABC wanting to promote some one who works for NBC. I would love to see Conan do it though. Another possibility that I have stated here on HP before, would be Kevin Spacey. He started out as a stand up act and does great impressions. I know he is over 45 so maybe too old, but he does have class.

I was watching the Oscars and said the same thing to my wife. I am not a fan of his music, but find him entertainting.

What makes you think they didn't ask Timberlake to host?
They can't get anyone to do it.
There's almost no upside and the downside is huge.

Does Jimmy Fallon have any ties to movies? The two of them are hysterical together. Or Hugh Jackman and JT and let the bloggers start cracking jokes ...

His appeal is to a very limited audience. I personally cant somach him. Certainly not for over 3 hours. Vast difference between SNL and the Oscars.

You won't think so if you watch the 2008 ESPY Awards that he hosted brilliantly. He
can sing, dance and quip jokes and be witty without a script. He is a perfect choice.
