So I'm a "Phony Soldier," Rush?

digg Share this on Facebook Huffpost - stumble reddit del.ico.us RSS

As Media Matters reported today, Rush Limbaugh, on his show said that those troops who come home and want to get America out of the middle of the religious civil war in Iraq are "phony soldiers." I'd love for you, Rush, to have me on your show and tell that to me to my face.

Where to begin?

First, in what universe is a guy who never served even close to being qualified to judge those who have worn the uniform? Rush Limbaugh has never worn a uniform in his life -- not even one at Mickey D's -- and somehow he's got the moral standing to pass judgment on the men and women who risked their lives for this nation, and his right to blather smears on the airwaves?

Second, maybe Rush doesn't much care, but the majority of troops on the ground in Iraq, and those who have returned, do not back the President's failed policy. If you go to our "Did You Get the Memo" page at VoteVets.org, there's a good collection of stories, polls, and surveys, which all show American's troops believe we are on the wrong track, not the right one, in Iraq.

Does Rush believe, then, that the majority of the US Armed Forces are "phony?"

Third, the polls and stories don't even take into account the former brass who commanded in Iraq, who are incredibly critical of the Bush administration, and it's steadfast refusal to listen to those commanders on the ground who have sent up warning after warning. Major Generals John Batiste and Paul Eaton left the military and joined VoteVets.org for that very reason.

Does Rush believe that highly decorated Major Generals are "phony soldiers?"

Finally, as Media Matters notes, just recently, members of the 82nd Airborne in Iraq wrote a New York Times op-ed, very critical of the course in Iraq, and suggesting it was time to figure out the exit strategy. Two of them just died. Will Rush call up their grieving parents and tell them that they should stop crying, because they were just "phony soldiers?"

Get the point here, Rush?

You weren't just flat out wrong, you offended a majority of those of us who actually had the courage to go to Iraq and serve, while you sat back in your nice studio, coming up with crap like this.

My challenge to you, then, is to have me on the show and say all of this again, right to the face of someone who served in Iraq. I'll come on any day, any time. Not only will I once again explain why your comments were so wrong, but I will completely school you on why your refusal to seek a way out of Iraq is only aiding al Qaeda and crippling American security.

Ball's in your court.

Here's how you can contact Rush: 800-282-2882. And the e-mail address, Rush@eibnet.com

I highly doubt that he'll avoid your call.

Reading these comments, i am amazed at the people that are going on what a Soro/Clinton organization said without going to the source. Limbaugh did not bad mouth the military or any member , past, present or any other. He did critizes the action of an individual, Jesse Macbeth, who lied to us about his service, what he did. what he saw, and even the award of the Purple Heart. He served 40 days and was kicked out of boot camp. His made up story rocketed him to the top of the liberal list, and it's all a lie. Look how many people believed the moron and contine to distort what Limbaugh said. If you don't like Limbaugh say so, don't use some lame story put on by a socialist group of people . Read the book "Stolen Valor" and you will see the liars that have made it to the main stage because of gulable , cool aid drinkers inablity to research the subject without prejudice. As for former members or present member of the military...get your heads out of your #$# and be proud of the fact you don't have to make up stuff to be popular! We are still the greatest nation, because of your actions and service.

Hi Jon! I am so proud of you for serving our country and having the courage to speak out--I will not give Rush Windbag any credence by writing about him here--any one with half a brain knows what he is..during the Vietnam War the same things were being said about vets returning and protesting against our actions there--Ron Kovic--the vet shown in the movie "Born on the Fourth of July"--had death threats posed against him, was called traitor and everything else. The times they are a changin'--lol--but so much remain the same! You keep fighting for what you know is the truth.
I am with you all the way! Jonie Girl

It is possible that Jon Soltz will receive an invitation from Rush Limbaugh to appear on the latter's radio show, but it would be a bad sign. It could only mean that Mr. Limbaugh had developed a spine and a sense of decency. That would not bode well for holding his current audience.

Limbaugh's audience does not tune in for intelligent discussions of complicated issues. They look for the shouts and bleats that can fit on a Republican bumper sticker. A rational and sober Rush is not an attraction to followers who still think that Saddam Hussein personally piloted one of the 9-11 planes and believe that the earth is a few thousand years old.

I'm so sick of this nonsense. Media Matters duped you all.

Here is proof that Media Matter intentionally distorted the story.

This is an assult on the men and women serving over there from a fat man who sits on his ass for three hours a day spewing vile and hate to an audience(the bad and often racist part of America) that eats it up. He should be skinned like a catfish and dumped into a bath of rubbing alcohol. This is what the (R)Republican mouth-piece has to offer our soldiers. Is he still on probation for doctor shopping for pain killers?

No, you are not a phony, you are a hero. You have to consider the source when dealing with republicans. If more people spoke out, more military spoke out on this war, against this war, forced congress to sign the war bill to end this war, it would be over tomorrow. Those who dare attack those who served, lost life and limb are the lowest of the low. They are proving that animals are smarter than they are, have a pulse and heart. Its a shame that oil has to come before human life, intelligence, but sadly, with republicans, that is all they care about. They don't care about truth, honesty, ethics, and they have the balls to talk about morals? Please, I know hookers who have more than they do. You have no reason to defend yourself against this moron. You did nothing wrong. He is the one who is embarrassing himself and his party. Bravo and keep up the good work.

Like my son says, "Fantasmarastic!"

Thank you Captain Soltz, not only for your excellent article, but for your honorable service. Thank you also for having the integrity to speak out on behalf of those who cannot, to those of us who need to listen. I hope Mr. Limbaugh does invite you on his show. It would be the first time I'd ever listen to it.

Rush Limbaugh has called our military who criticize or oppose the war in Iraq "phony soldiers." Thus, according to Rush, the numerous American soldiers who, notwithstanding their opposition to the war, bravely followed orders, did combat in Iraq and were injured or even gave their lives there (such as Omar Mora and Yance T. Gray who wrote an Op-Ed in the New York Times criticizing the war) are "phony soldiers." I served honorably for twenty years in the U.S. military, but today I oppose the war in Iraq. I assume Rush will call me a "phony veteran." Considering the source--a man who has the gal to defame those who served while he himself never served a single day in the military (allegedly because of a boil between his buttocks)--I would wear such an accusation as a badge of honor.

Looks like the neocons used up all their "indignation" whining about a pun. When Bush Limbaugh slimes people actually serving on the ground and dying in Iraq all you hear is silence.

It's interesting that Mr. Limbaugh took the position that those veterans who are against the war in Iraq are "phony" soldiers.
First, let's start by saying that Mr. Limbaugh never served in the military, nor the Reserves, nor the National Gurard for that matter. I don't even know if he was a boy scout or not.
Why not? He was eligible for the draft during the war in Viet Nam, why didn't he get drafted or enlist? Does anybody know? Has he ever discussed it on the record?
Surely, a patriot such as he would have gone into uniform if he was able. Was he disabled in some way? Hmmm...makes me wonder.
Secondly, if he "supports" the war so strongly, why would he not call for a draft so that all like-minded individuals, and their children will have the honor of fighting them over there so we won't have to fight them over here.
I will tell you all one thing, if the draft was reinstated, this war in Iraq would be over in a heart beat. But if I'm wrong, and it's not, then just think of all the children of the members of congress, all the children of privledge and all the children of all the Republicans who will have the honor to serve the people of the America by fighting them over there....or here...or...whatever.

To answer your question, little Rushie did not serve in any branch of the military because he had a cyst on his fat, lazy, cowardly ass and was thus classified as 4F. How's that for courage and commitment to God and country!

Jon:

Bigots are cowards. And there is no worse bigot than the arrogant Limbaugh, who's respect for anyone is only given when you do not question Republican policy.

He hates what he fears; brave men and women that love their country more than they love any ideology.

You'll never be invited onto to his show because he's too frightened to discuss Iraq with anyone that has served there.

Thank you for your service. You represent the very best of this country.

It's incredibly ironic that you are criticized by the very worst America has to offer.

You can't blame poor Rush for not serving. His Republican bigwig dad's doctor managed to find a 'chronic condition' in little Rush that kept him out of the military. I suppose that condition may have also caused his eardrums to blow out a few years back... though taking huge amounts of hillbilly heroin *coincidentally* also has the side effect of causing hearing loss.
