Do you know why people make bad calls? Do you know why people fuck up?
Do you know why people get caught up in their own worlds, hurt other people, blow opportunities and destroy themselves?

It's because many people live their lives on autopilot, and live their lives without mindfulness. And unfortunately, the default position, when we live that way, is to make choices that are purely focused on us. Make choices that are purely focused on what we want and what we need, and it turns into a viciously destructive pattern.

I've been in that position many times, and I can't tell you how shattered I feel now, looking back on the folks who I ended up damaging and disappointing because I acted out of my default, knee jerk position - refusing to accept anyone else's needs when my own were my sole priority.

Which is precisely why I meditate.

And I'm not talking about emulating Steve Jobs and pretending that I have inner peace. That wouldn't be true. I'm talking about taking 10 minutes - just 10 - at the start of every single day. I take 10 minutes to sit in silence, eyes closed, no devices, no notifications, and just focus on things external to me.

I focus on thinking about the people I'll come into contact with throughout my day, and what my attitude should be towards them. I focus on thinking about my commitments, and what they represent. I focus on the tiny things, the details, the responsibilities and the joy in how I spend my time.

This doesn't mean I have a secret weapon to become an invincible entrepreneur. All it means is that instead of acting on my default instincts. The fact is that being a entrepreneur (that magical world that somehow means today what rockstar meant in the 70's) doesn't give any of us a free pass to act like a bunch of assholes. And the only way I know to guard against that is to spend time in meditation, simple no-bullshit meditation.
