Richards has it right again--follow the money-pipeline. It should be said the Alaska pipeline also faced anticipated but unrealized disasters. But to run a pipeline across the biggest aquifer in the mid/south west to be regulated by the same kinds of folks that brought you the Gulf of Mexico would bring this country's energy hysteria level to a new level. Not everything that is called "good for jobs" is good the country or even for the people who do the jobs. They'll have to drink the water, too.

Once again Jonathan Richards absolutely captures the issue, which is money vs destroying the environment. For too long we have chosen money. It's time to invest in clean energy which will also create jobs and leave a healthier environment for our children and grandchildren.

my only concern is what happens when the inevitable line break occurs. The oil industry has quite a nasty habit of fibbing about the anount of spills and the overall safety and effectiveness of protective measures. Industry documentation stated that the very safety measures in the gulf were inadequate even as they were telling the government that they were safe...their paperwork on their letterhead, I do not trust that the industry would even begin to keep its word concerning safety procedures...the gulf is still a mess.

I fully understand the associated ills with both pipelines (initial enviro. destruction and possible leaks) as well as the climate affects of burning fossil fuels. However, it seems like we are stuck burning those fuels for a long while until this nation develops different technology and infrastructure.

Bad move to let this one get away. Alot of jobs lost, and safer supply of oil. The pipeline is underground and wouldn't affect the environment. Too bad

The pipe line is above ground in some places, and it goes over the aquifer that waters the midwest crops, now that doesn't sound like smart ideal, or did forget about the BP spill.....

Allowing this pipeline to proceed, when Canadians themselves don't want one snaking through their pristine forests, is equal to allowing our beautiful pasture lands to serve as "drug mules" for Big Oil.
We get nothing from this but the risk of spill and pollution, which isn't so much a risk as a promise.
Pipelines leak, all the time.
Canada owns the oil, they will sell it on the world market, to whichever customer offers the highest price.
It is NOT ours.
Don't sacrifice our natural resources for Big Oil profits.

USA needs the oil, it is from a friendly country and we need the jobs but a few misinformed people are protesting and Obama is only concerned about his reelection so will do nothing. Here are the facts, pipelines are all over this country and on a ton mile basis are by far the safest mode of transportation.

There is no more oil, and we are going to have to change, we have no choice in the matter because the oil isn't going to last forever when we have already reached peak oil and are now on the downward slide...
