Just minutes ago on Fox News I saw Sarah Palin tell Greta van Susteren that the rumors that she wanted to ban books in the local library while she was mayor of Wasilla, Alaska were false.
Governor Palin said the charge was untrue because someone accused her of banning Harry Potter books and that would be impossible because Harry Potter "hadn't even been written when I was mayor." But Sarah Palin was mayor of Wasilla from 1996 to 2002 and there were additions to the Harry Potter series in that period.
So the conclusion to be drawn here is either 1). Palin is lying about her attempt at book burning in Wasilla and trying to cover it up; or 2). Palin is so clueless about secular popular culture she is unaware of the time period of the publication of the books in the mega-hit Harry Potter series. Of course, van Susteren -- dutiful Fox News Republican ventriloquist dummy she is -- just let Palin's assertion go by unchallenged. I just thought it was really weird. I guess Palin just lies even when she doesn't have to or is really culturally challenged up there in the tundra. Did anybody else see this?

Just goes to show how disconnected most Alaskans are from the rest of the world, most, not all; especially those 60% who still have a favorable rating of their Governor Palin
Anyone taking bets on if there will be a Caribou Barby out for Christmas? I'm not interested in the doll, but the accessory kits should rock!

It still makes a lot of sense that Palin would not like Harry Potter very much because fundamentalists see paganism in there and think satan is stealing children's minds. No matter what she says -- I mean she has lied so much already I'd believe George W. Bush before I'd believe her.
Hm, OJ and Palin... Good bookends for VS
The first Harry Potter book was published in 1997 and the last one in 2007.
But, to give her credit, this is something she does not necessarily have to know.
I'm afraid, her children do not know either. The television seems to be the main source of information
in this family, there is one in their kitchen which was on during Matt Lauer's visit. That might be the main reason why she was unable to name one newspaper she reads.
Do you remember when Greta was at CNN & when she went to Fox they made her have plastic surgery
so she didn't look so much like a cubist painting? Then she just lost all credibility as a journalist because, well...Fox doesn't hire journalists. So I think Fox needs to change the name (lest they get caught actually broadcasting news) to Fox Stuff that happened that we have our own particular
strong opinion of...instead of Fox News. As for Sarah Palin; like mose sores and warts; ignore them and they eventually go away.
She's spun this story too much and the details got lost.
Originally, this story was hitting all the blogs based on the librarian's claims that she "inquired" to ban books, specifically books about having 2 daddies, etc.
The librarian refused and was fired, but others intervened and she was reinstated.
THEN, after the story circulated on the net, some hoaxter sent out a list of books she supposedly tried to ban and it was very long and included a bunch of very innocuous titles, as if to imply, the woman is such an extremist, she would ban all children's books dealing with "magic" Harry Potter books were on that list, including some of the newest titles. Once that list got circulated, Palin grabbed on to the inconsistencies on that list only, as proof the whole thing never happened, but she never answered to the charges the librarian made, or others who confirmed that story.
This is the kind of obfuscation she banks on. Pure Fox news style of proving and disproving.
I thought she tried to ban books while a member of city council, not while she was mayor.
You know how the liberal media twists everything.Thankfully Sarah was on a station that's"fair and balanced"
I'm late jumping in on this, but yes as a Pottergeek I noticed the anachronism right away. Poor ol' Palin cain't buy a break. Welcome to real world politics Sarah!
Is Greta on commission?
Sarah will only do interview with those who will not question her. She is on the "Repackaging of Sarah" tour right now. But I don't believe you can be a serious contender for the White House and only do interviews with Fox, Christian Broadcasting Network, Dobson, and Matt Lauer fluff pieces.
At some point, she will have to do some hardball interview. Well, then again......one would think that's true, but Sarah might just find away around it.
Don't watch cable news. Don't take anything from cable news seriously. It is not news. It is not serious. It is poison.
Cable news in general, or just Fox news?
Cable news in general. Network news too. It's a toxic mess. Blondes in distress, every issue of the day reduced to a shouting match, blondes in distress, poll after poll after poll, blondes in distress, lazy reporters who let every outrage go unchallenged and give equal weight to all sides of every issue. There are no more than 20 minutes of news at any given moment, and every day CNN gives us 23 hours and 40 minutes of drivel.
Punditry is not news. Polls are not news. The Republican guy yelling at the Democratic guy is not news. Soft-focus interviews with the flavor-of-the-month are not news. People think it's news because that's all they've ever known, but it's just cheap entertainment.
Singling out Fox is like beating a dead horse. Their awfulness is obvious to all. Anyway, CNN is far worse because they pretend to be a legitimate news outfit, while Fox is unabashedly a freak show. And network news is no better. I can't bear to see another Richard Engel report from Baghdad that features laughing Iraqi children playing soccer. Manipulative emotional drivel, a smokescreen for the debacle of Bush's occupation of Iraq.
Faux Noise
All of 'em, Abc, Nbc, Cbs, Cnn, Faux: Corporate owned media. (Rethugs)
Keith Olbermann, swoon, and Rachael Maddow on MSNBC tell it straight, thank god.
Palin should know that whatever comes off her lips will be looked into. My children set me straight on this one. Of course the books were published during her tenure. The ease with which she lies is just mind boggling. It doesn't make her uncomfortable at all and if I hear one more time about her comments being misconstrued when they are all documented on video, I think I will be sick.
She appeals to the right for exactly these reasons. She is about as superficial as they come, she's a stellar liar and she is void of any knowledge other than what is on the teleprompter. I for one welcome her in 2012. we will be ready!
Yes, I saw it on huffpo. The first 4 books were released in the US during her tenure as mayor in Wasilla.
I guess the Harry Potter book she was referring to was the 5th book -- the one with the character she identifies with, Dolores Umbridge.

Good Lord! You gave me the best laugh of the day. I wonder why people lie when it can easily be fact checked? Why not say that she did it and was truly sorry about it (even if she isn't it plays better)? Shameful, she just keeps on doing the same thing over and over while expecting different results. What is the word for that kind of behavior?
I believe that is the definition of insanity so the word is insanity.
But for Palin....it didn't matter how many times things were fact checked, or how many times she was called out on all of her lies....it didn't matter to her followers. They just didn't listen....that shows how dumb they can be.
