When a Young Catholic Has Had Enough, He Resigns

Posted: 04/05/2012 11:08 am

In light of Archbishop Timothy Cardinal Dolan's comments directed at the LGBT community, I resigned from the Executive Committee of the Junior Board of Catholic Charities. By this action, I seek not to disparage the work of Catholic Charities, but to voluntarily remove myself as a leader with an organization under the pastoral leadership of Dolan. Below is an open letter that I sent to the Chief Development Officer and the staff person assigned to the Junior Board:

Dear Ms. McGowan and Ms. King:

After careful consideration and prayerful discernment, it is with mixed emotions that I submit my resignation as a member of the Executive Board of the Junior Board of Catholic Charities. Although I have a great deal of respect for the work of the organization and the incredible talent behind its efforts, I have found it difficult in recent weeks and months to reconcile serving on the Executive Committee of a board under the pastoral leadership of Archbishop Timothy Cardinal Dolan.

The comments that His Eminence has made regarding same-sex couples, the LGBT community in general, and his recent in-action in response to the Ali Forney Center's plea for pastoral assistance, has left me with no other choice but to resign. Contrary to His Eminence's response to Ali Forney's Executive Director, Mr. Siciliano's comments were not inflammatory, they were truth; they were a call for help; and they were expressive of the cry in the wilderness that LGBT people have been making for far too long. As a religious and pastoral leader for millions of Catholics, his voice is needed as together we work to create homes that are safe, affirming and welcoming for LGBT youth. The LGBT community is not asking the Cardinal to change Church teaching, but rather to exercise the Church's social justice teachings. I hope the day will come when things will be less about "clear teachings" and more about what is truly right and just in the eyes of Truth itself.

This resignation should not be seen as casting an aspersion on Catholic Charities, but rather an ethical dilemma of a personal nature related to Archdiocesan leadership. As someone who believes in the message of love enshrined in the teachings of Christ, I find it disheartening that a man of God would refuse to extend a pastoral arm to the Ali Forney Center and the hundreds of LGBT youth that are housed, fed, educated and provided free health services. These are concerns that I will share with the Office of the Cardinal and the Archdiocesan Pastoral Council as well.

As a gay Catholic who teaches religious education (more than eight years in service to the Archdiocese of New York), is active in parish life and supports Catholic organizations, I'm afraid that the Archbishop has caused my heart to ache and my soul to feel pierced. With a discerning mind, I have tried to overlook the Cardinal's actions and comments, but this has now become impossible in light of his curt words to Mr. Siciliano and New York City's homeless LGBT youth.

It has been a great honor to serve Catholic Charities and to be a voice for the organization in my social circles as well as through my writing and online activities, so it is with a heavy heart that I make this decision and submit this resignation.

I submit this resignation with great respect for Catholic Charities and with hopes that one day the vision of peace and love that Christ promised will be realized.

Toward equality,
Joseph Amodeo

Joseph, perhaps we've had enough of you too and you should take yourself to the Anglican Church and quit seeking to destroy ours?
10:06 PM on 05/23/2012
Joseph, you are truly inspiring in your honest and forthright letter. We need more people like you in the Catholic Church, people who think and pray and form their consciences based on Our Lord's command that we love one another as He has loved us.

I pray that someday our Church will recognize that we are all brothers and sisters in Christ -- no exceptions!

God bless you for your work. Please continue to help all who are "the least" among us.

What is most inspiring about this story is that so many others including those in Episcopal and Protestant congregations are also rallying in Christian unity around this very important issue.

I am looking forward to the time when our bishops accept the call to love themselves and those they are called to shepherd.

Blessings to you Joseph

Mr. Amodeo: You didn't get your way. Now take the baseball and go home. Bye-bye! Maybe you can afflict the liberals in the Episcopal Church (if they still exist) while the Episcopalians faithful to the Gospel uphold the Tradition of the universal Church as Catholicism does, something you apparently deny. Get over yourself.

I thank you for standing up for what you believe in. I hope more people realize that the LGBT youth need our help, especially when their families have kicked them out of their homes because of their religious beliefs. I hope you're resigning makes a difference in the way that Archbishop Timothy Cardinal Dolan acts and represents his Archdiocese.

What do you get when you mix politcal science with religious studies? An agenda driven Theology. Perhaps he will cause a schism in the Church. Similar to Martin Luther's rift with the church after he posted the Diet of Worms in the 12th Century thus giving birth to Lutheranism. Though none of the schism of any churches far as I can recall had anything to do with sexual preferences. I think the Church has always dealt with those behind closed rectory doors. Odd that only the Catholic Church seems to be dealing with this now.

I left that sham a long time ago. They are not what Jesus taught, they are the Pharisees

Don't be so hard on the homosexual advocacy organizations - they have their own point of view.

Bye, Bye, you won't be missed! So please don't look back Joseph.

Does anyone know if Covenant House can be manipulated by the bishops as Catholic Charities has been in Massachusetts and Illinois and DC? I used toi contribute there when i had funds. I just don't want to give these guys any more money to hide, even though I understand Dolan's Milwaukee pockets were pretty big.

Good for you, Joseph!!!

Good for you, Joseph. Your values sound truly spiritual in contrast to those of someone who allows himself to be called "His Eminence."

What values? Obama put him up to it.

If you're going to attempt to be scathing and sarcastic, at the absolute least, try to come up with a point to make, otherwise you're just sticking your tongue out at someone on the playground.
The teenagers I know stopped saying 'Obama' about everything years ago. Do try and show some maturity.

Gay Catholic?? Why do people have this innate desire to be looked down upon. Why would any self respecting gay person remain Catholic?

You had me at "self-respecting person." ;-)

And as a non-Christian your view on Catholic teaching would be important WHY......?

Did I ever claim that they were important? Typical Christian behaviour. To attack the messenger. Instead of tackling the issue, "peaceful" Christians attack the person. About your other statement about my compassion, again same thing. WHERE did I claim to be compassionate? Frankly I have no compassion left for Christians(Catholics at least). When you are subjected to constant taunting and demeaning, you tend to not have it but then I am open about it. Hypocrisy is not my forte, it surely is a Catholic one though.
09:06 PM on 04/15/2012
I feel bad for whatever bad things happened to you. however, my point is that your thoughts on theology are irrelevant since you openly profess being non-Christian and non-spiriutal....and, if I read you correctly, a-moral? On what basis do you judge hypocrisy to be wrong if you recognize no metaphysical norms? Subjectivism may seem to leave you free to disparage Catholics, but, philosophically, it allows you no option, except to make no moral judgments (like hypocrisy) at all without contradicting your own premise. Another name for this contradiction is hypocrisy! And that's from ARISTOTLE, not the Church. Chill out.

Here are excerpts from the 'invitation' Mr. Siciliano sent to the Cardinal:

'And I write to you as a member of the Archdiocese of New York who is deeply ashamed by the ways that his bishop contributes to the abuse and harm suffered by these youths'.

'I want you to understand how you, and other religious leaders who fight against the acceptance of LGBT people, are helping to create a national tragedy.'

'Certainly you must see your responsibility in fostering a climate where parents turn on their own children, for you have been a loud and strident voice against the acceptance of LGBT people as equal members of our society.

I hope and pray that you can stop fighting the acceptance of LGBT people as equal citizens..'

That's certainly the way to extend an invitation and solicit cooperation - a punch in the nose.

Either Mr. Amodeo has been duped by Mr. Siciliano or he is a part of this hamhanded piece of political theater with its heroes and villains. And of course, in certain circles playing victim to the Church makes one very popular.

The invitation was published on Huffpost, so cherrypicking out of context won't do you any good.

Looks pretty hateful to me. This is clearly a manufactured confrontation.

Very restrained who for someone who was just maligned.

Oh well, the Cardinal did not take the bait.

Better luck next time.
