'Ground Zero Mosque' and Religious Freedom in America


The core American ideal of religious freedom has been put at risk. News of Park51, the proposed Muslim community center in lower Manhattan, has spawned protests against a religious group that simply seeks to create a meeting place and has gone out of its way to make clear that the space will be open to the entire New York community.

These protests, diatribes, and campaigns against Park51 violate the ideals of religious freedom to which our country has long aspired. The First Amendment of the Constitution states explicitly that

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or of the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

The local government has so far done its part to uphold and apply these Constitutional rights. The Community Board of Lower Manhattan approved the building project 29 to 1, with 10 abstentions, and Mayor Michael Bloomberg voiced his strong support.

But individuals have taken the application of this freedom into their own hands. It would appear that more extreme voices want this right to apply only to their own religious communities, and not to others. But when one group's freedoms are threatened, the religious freedom of all Americans is at stake.

In response to the ongoing and often radical criticism of Park51 and its leaders, we are proud to announce the launch of Religious Freedom USA. Religious Freedom USA is a new campaign to safeguard freedom of religion and mobilize Americans to support Park51 as an expression of this core American value. We invite and encourage you to join the movement. Send in a video of support, write a letter to the editor, sign our petition, help organize a local rally, or join us for an event here in New York.

Some may wonder why a Born Again Christian and a future rabbi, both under the age of 25, are working to build support for a Muslim community center. To us it seems natural: this is not simply a Muslim issue, a Jewish issue, or a Christian issue. This is an American issue, and members of all religious communities are affected by a threat to religious freedom.

As our Petition for Religious Freedom makes clear,

Since the first pilgrims reached the shores of Plymouth, America has shone as a beacon of religious freedom, illuminating the path to liberty for the oppressed from every land, in every generation. Extreme criticism of the proposed Muslim community center in lower Manhattan is an affront to the religious freedom that our Founding Fathers fought to secure. We stand by our belief in freedom of worship and freedom of expression and consider the Park51 community center to be an expression of both. We are proud to unite behind it as a symbol of religious freedom.
This is about protecting the civil rights assured to all Americans in the Constitution.


Some may question why Park51 should be located in Downtown Manhattan, not so far from the site where terrorists brutally took 3,000 innocent American lives on 9/11. We would respond that those terrorists have already taken so much from us that they should not be allowed to take the soul of America, too. That soul resides in the basic tenets of the American Constitution, notably the belief that religious freedom must be extended to all, not granted on a case-by-case basis. Our fight against al-Qaeda starts at home with our fight to protect the Constitutional values they so viciously oppose.

We must not allow religious freedom to be compromised. That would be not only a loss for the American community in which we live, but also a slight to the Founding Fathers and the hopes they had for our country. Park51 represents a defining moment for religious freedom in America.

Addressing the Hebrew Congregation of Newport, Rhode Island, as America's first president, George Washington, expressed this hope: "May the children of the stock of Abraham who dwell in this land continue to merit and enjoy the good will of the other inhabitants, while every one shall sit in safety under his own vine and fig-tree, and there shall be none to make him afraid." In working together to protect religious freedom, we may yet realize his vision.

Ours is a secular country. Due to the historical significance of the site, I don't believe ANY religion should be allowed to put a religious institution there, whether it be church, synagogue, or mosque. Doing so would inherently be an insult to some of those that died there.

The only reason I am against this is that the building is hisorical and I feel historical buildings should be preserved as much as possible.

Are all old buildings of historical value? As an architect I refuse to accept the notion that any old building needs to be preserved. If a structure is granted the status of a historic monument, then it should be preserved. If not, whoever wants to do whatever with the building legally should be allowed.

The Site in question is TWO AND A HALF BLOCKS AWAY AND AROUND THE CORNER, FACING AWAY! This whole thing is just to stir up anti Muslim animosity, because Christians have nothing else to run on. They are like "SEE?! See how bad the OTHER GUYS ARE? SEE!?!?

All religion is totally insane and dangerous.

Then please try to think up some sort of a story telling religious people to keep their religion in their CHURCH where it belongs. I want freedom from religion. That should be as important as freedom OF religion. what ya think? I didn't mean this as any kinda mean spirited hate. I don't believe and i am not going to and i am tired of people telling me I am wrong.

Many cultures have come to this country, added their unique customs, cuisine, skills - and they have learned from the many other cultures already here to both enrich the diversity of the American culture and their own. This is a fundamental strength of the United
States and is unique to this country. All these people structure their contribution on the unique and
superior Constitution, Laws and balanced government of Executive, Legislative and Judicial supports to

of those wise founders of this country, its strength and durability for 200+ years. It also does not demand
that its inhabitants be Christians. It does demand that they not be treasonous. These principles are unique in their comprehensive wisdom. Only the foolish and the hateful would wish these principles to be lost for their own selfish, or evil purposes. What
we all must differentiate is politics couched in religion. In the case of Islam the correct term is much more dire than politics..concealed in wistful argument..How many american must be fools to lose this great

This simple comment on Huffington of all places sums up my own feelings and I think a majority of other Americans......here it is:

The founders were not christians nor did they do any of this to reflect christian values. These god given or christian values are issues that were around long before jesus and/or the bible.

I assume from the correct spelling and woounderful grammer exhibitted many who have writen comments in this sight have a collage education but from the view points expressed I think your collage was the biggest benificiary of the tuition that you paid them.

Sense this nation was founded it has not been a ray of hope and religious freedom. there havew been many atrosities commited in the nwame of our God
We did not accept the religion of the American Indians and went so far aqs to put a bounty on their heads with the bless of our governm,ent, we had Christens take the "SAVAGES" out of their home and sent them to boardimg schools up until in so,m places the mid 1900 , the Catlolic church ddiid a number on the natives of the saouth west , even inslaving them in the name of their Christ and we had our own holocost with them in the name of Cristeiandom get you head out the clouds We christian in the US have not been anything in my humble oppinion worthy of a blessing from god or we have pushed to the limits his grace of forgiveness of us for our sins. "All Religions are pathway to God. No one religion is superior or truer than the other"

That should be posted in Bold letters, on whatever is built, That would show they are moderates.IF NOT, THEY ARE BIG0TS! And they should be thrown out of there with extreme Prejudice.

Do you know that with "extreme Prejudice" means? In the Vietnam war to "Terminante with Extreme Prejudice" was a phrase used by the CIA towards operatives who they thought had gone over to the other side... they were to be killed.

I can agree that all religions and all prophets sent to all nations are valid paths to got. In fact that is a tennent of Islam.

Can you say that Muhamamd was a prohpet and his religion like all others is a path to God? If not they your own rule applies to you too.

Ground Zero is a Grave sight, it is unthinkable that any church should aspire to build its ediface on this Holy spot.

The American Indians had it right, it is a serious offence to even venture on the land. I would be ashamed to even suggest such a monsterous idea. All the souls are not at rest, it was a unprepared crossing for these people, a horrible sad area that should mourn for at least one hundred years.

It's not being built on ground zero. Oh and if building over an American Indian grave bothers you now then we should pretty much tear down everything. Since every inch of this land had American Indians living and dying on it long before any "native" white person's ancestors got here.

Mark these words....if a mosque is built, it will become a North American pilgrimage site for the Wahabbi sect. At least untill they build a bigger shrine 'near' the site of their next victory.

Why would wahabbis congregate at a cultural center designed to bridge the gap between Muslims and non-Muslims. They are traditionalists and would only associate with other wahhabis.
