20 Places For Wine Tasting Where You Can Spend The Night (PHOTOS)

Posted: 09/13/2012 7:00 am

'Tis the season to slip on a sweater, tour wine country and taste just-released reds and whites.

To help guide the oenological pursuits of others, I polled a few of my fellow travel junkies on where some of the best hotels and resorts were to stay and swirl. I poured in a couple of my own picks too.

From the vineyard-abundant countries of France and Italy to lesser known city hotels with serious cellars (so one doesn't need to take the long trip out to grape-growing country), here's a global guide to getting your vino on.

  • Wine & Spa Resort Loisium Hotel, Austria

For those who like their buildings modern -- glass and textured metal here -- and their wine tastings capped off with spa treatments, this truly unique resort in Langenlois, Austria is the one for you.

  • Hotel Okura, Netherlands

While Holland is not known for wine, this hotel has a proper wine tasting room with black glasses, so not only do you not know which wine it is, you can’t even see if it’s white or red.

  • Les Sources de Caudalie, France

Adjacent to its own chateau where they produce excellent reds (you're in a Bordeaux town, after all), they also use their famous grape-based beauty products in their spa, the world's first Vinotherapy spa in a luxury retreat. Get Chateau de Haut Brion by the glass at the bar.

  • Royal Champagne, France

For those lovers of bubbly, this palace in Champagne country is the perfect perch; it overlooks Moët & Chandon. Napoleon and his men were housed here at one time, but there was no Michelin starred restaurant then.

  • Grand Barrail Château Resort & Spa, France

This stunning 19th-century château surrounded by a seven-acre vineyard also features one of the only medicalized spas in France, so wine therapy isn't your only option.

  • The Yeatman, Portugal

Owned by a port wine maker, this hotel is all about wines and tasting them. Facing the clay-roof dotted UNESCO hillside of Porto, the world’s largest cork lives here, as does a 10-room wine spa and 25,000-bottle cellar.

  • VILA VITA Parc, Portugal

This countryside-coastal luxury hotel is well-stocked in gorgeous gardens, thrilling activities and authentic Portuguese hospitality. Plus, a fantastic wine cellar.

  • Romaneira, Portugal

Located in the Douro region, the farmhouse-style villa features exposed beams and white exterior walls. There’s also a lack of telephones and TVs, so there’s nothing to distract your palate from the Port.

  • L’AND Vineyards, Portugal

The name says it all. L’AND Vineyards is set in Alentejo, a south-central region of Portugal, on a prize-winning vineyard. A stay here relaxes the mind and expands one’s knowledge of viniculture.

  • Hotel Marques de Riscal, Spain

Really interesting architecture (Frank Gehry designed the building) and Rioja wines come together at this Basque Country estate. Read more about the experience here.

  • Atrio Restaurante Hotel, Spain

Atrio has over 2,500 wines from more 20 different countries totaling more than 45,000 bottles. Chateau d'Yquem is well represented, including an 1806 vintage for €110,000. It has been awarded the Grand Award for the best stocked wine cellar in the world many times by the renowned Wine Spectator magazine.

  • Il Salviatino, Italy

With a view of Florence, this romantic property puts you near arts and within wine culture all at once. The September-October harvest season is a perfect time to witness the work that goes into winemaking. The only work you have to do though is eat (the creations of Michelin starred Chef Carmine Caló), drink and be massaged (they have a fabulous spa).

  • Castello Banfi Il Borgo, Italy

A Kiwi Collection stay at this princely Siena property comes with a bottle of sparkling wine and €50 credit to the wine shop and bar to get you started. A Tuscan dinner with wine pairings at La Taverna? A must.

  • Tower Lodge, Australia

The welcome here is as warm as you'll feel after a few glasses of good red. Maitre d' Maison Andreas Breitfuss makes it a point to greet every guest. Rooms offer great views of the property's vineyards. There's also an extensive cellar where you can try their own Tower Estate wines or other Australian labels.

  • The Allison Inn, Oregon

The Willamette Valley where this inn is located is known as the best wine region in the state, with some 200 wineries. Their restaurant, JORY, expertly pairs locally-inspired dishes with wines or microbrews (another thing Oregon is known for).

  • Hotel Les Mars, California

Decorated in a decidedly and decadently French style, this property in Healdsburg partners with wineries in Sonoma, Napa and Monterey so guests receive complimentary tours, tastings and perks. If you don't feel like leaving the hotel, there are also wine and cheese receptions hosted on-site.

  • Glenmere Mansion, New York

This 150-acre property in New York’s lower Hudson Valley looks and feels like a plush Tuscan estate. While it doesn’t produce its own wines, it provides an excellent base for exploring local wineries like Brotherhood Winery, the oldest winery in the U.S. Read more about the experience here.

  • The Greenwich Hotel, New York

This hotel, co-owned by Robert De Niro, is around the corner from Terroir Tribeca, Kiwi Collection Expert Megan Montenaro's favorite wine bar in the city. The hotel can also arrange a vintage Aston Martin to take you to North Fork of Long Island to explore the vineyards there.

  • Burrowing Owl, British Columbia

The South Okanagan wine region of Western Canada is still a bit of a secret, but word is getting out. Here, Burrowing Owl is one of the best and boasts a gorgeous property. You can drink their award-winning portfolio of wines (chardonnay and a bevy of the reds) from one of 10 guest suites, at the restaurant along with a delectable meal or in the tasting room.

  • Sparkling Hill, British Columbia

After a stay at Burrowing Owl in Oliver, it’s highly recommended you head north visiting the myriad of wineries along the way, then end your trip at this unique Vernon resort. The extensive spa, which features the only cold sauna in North America, will help you unwind from the winding road trip. The restaurant upstairs will ply you with more wine. Read more about the experience here.
