I'm Just One Drag Queen

This November, people in San Francisco are being asked to weigh in on a lot of different questions. So many, in fact, that it can be overwhelming. Lots of people will be telling you how to vote on these propositions. I'm just one drag queen--I don't have a political action committee or big money backing me up--but I care a helluva lot about the future of our city and the plight of people living here who haven't been so lucky.

That's why I want to call your attention to Prop Q - Prohibiting Tents on Public Sidewalks. The name says it all: the focus is on perceived unsightly obstructions, not the people who have to live inside them. This proposition is uncaring and mean-spirited, and it does nothing to address our housing crisis. That's the opposite of the San Francisco values that I and so many others hold.

Voting for this measure might make some people feel good in the moment, and it may help some other ambitious politicians climb the ladder. But it won't help the folks who need it the most: our homeless neighbors. We need real solutions to this problem, and in a city with San Francisco's resources which will reach $9.6 billion this year, we should be able to do much better and figure out how to help 7500 homeless people.
