Recently I was part of a group of women who filmed public service announcements for an organization called Women's Voices. Women Vote. The goal of the PSA campaign is to encourage high voter turn-out amongst women, especially single women, 20 million of whom have been known to stay home on Election Day. It is an issue about which I am deeply passionate. However, there have been reports about WVWV which questioned the intention behind my PSA and which candidate I am endorsing for president. For the record, I am proudly supporting Senator Barack Obama.
The news reports came about because there was evidence that an individual or a small group of individuals affiliated with WVWV may have issued misleading robo-calls in North Carolina designed to suppress voter turnout in African American neighborhoods. I find these activities appalling and hope WVWV will immediately disassociate themselves from such individuals and denounce such actions.
I am not affiliated with WVWV in any way other than participating in this PSA campaign, and I debated whether to ask WVWV to pull my PSA from their website. In the end, I realized the message of the PSA is more important than the actions of some its members. Every woman, 18 or older, should exercise their right to vote for the candidate and the issues they believe in. As women, we are a powerful voting bloc. But that does not mean we will automatically align with female candidates.
My spot was set in a replica of the Oval Office and entitled "Who Do You Want in Here?" This was meant as a legitimate question, not to serve as an endorsement for a particular candidate. The PSA was meant to inspire women to vote regardless of their party or their position. The PSA, like me, is not pro-Clinton, but rather pro-women. And yes, you can be both.

We the people of USA should back someone for president not because of their gender, age or race. Rather, we should elect someone who can bring us together and best lead this country to be the best it can be.
OBAMA 08
Now you see that is the kind of talk that I like to hear..
GOD BLESS YOU OBAMANATION31
Thank you for your clairification. And, I agree that the original intent of WVWV- to get out the single female vote is such an important one. I do believe this group has been linked to this same type of deceptive calling in 11 other states during this primary, including my state of Virginia. They acted illegally in some states by either falsely identifying who they were or not identifying themselves at all. An organization IS accountable for the actions of any of it's membership, especially such well-organized and methodical actions.
Perhaps, another PSA to warn unsuspecting voters (they targeted the AA community, not just single females) of this deceptive practice would be helpful.
Well played, Ms. Louis-Dreyfuss. I appreciate the clarification.
I think it will take some major deconstruction for WVWV to lose this baggage - all the consultants who responsible for this are on their leadership team!
Julia, I knew you were funny and could act, but I had no idea you were politically adept as well. A triple threat! Way to go on your post. It was well taken.
but you know you would have to have s-x.
Get out of here Julia : You're just upset that you are not "The Candidate".
If you're not with us....
Pro-woman is good, however people need to understand that voting for someone just because of what is between their legs does not good politics make.
First things first:
I LOVE THE ADVENTURES OF OLD CHRISTINE!
Ok, about your post - thank you for clarifying and for being so cool about it. Very classy.
First off...off topic...Ju lia..Can I tell you..that I LOVE your show!! Lets just say - in these troubled times..it' s GOOD to Laugh, and your show makes my stomach hurt, great cast..writ ers..and comic timing! On topic...I look at the election this way...McCa in represents the Way Past, Clinton Represents the Past....Ob ama represents a NEW America for (yes I'll say it..CHANGE ) in every aspect of America's Future! .
Great comments Julia - and thanks for the clarification on your role with WVWV.
You wrote this: "I find these activities appalling and hope WVWV will immediately disassociate themselves from such individuals and denounce such actions."
Better yet - how about they just END those controversial actions and discontinue their usage in the future... no matter who the Democratic nominee ends up being.
Excellent article!
Thank you for providing the clarity, getting involved and for keeping us laughing, Julia.
The thing is, this isn't the first time WVWV has been involved in this. If it was a one-time deal, I'd accept their explanation. As it is, they've got a lot more convincing to do.
agreed - this is already disappearing in the MSM - all I can think is -if the shoe was on the other foot?
Lordy, if the shoe was on the other foot... that list is a long one.
I just have to say I loved you on SNL and Seinfeld, tried to like you in Watching Ellie but didn't appreciate the adulterous boyfriend thing, and am loving you again in The New Adventures of Old Christine. Keep us laughing.
Thanks for adding the word "spongeworthy" to my vocabulary.
Julia, you rock. I've been a fan of yours since the eighties. I appreciate that you're leaving the PSA up, supporting the cause above everything else.
And for the good of the cause, I think you should reconsider your endorsement. Obama is a great candidate but he is not ready yet and this country isn't ready for him.
You need look no further than your ex-co-star Michael Richards for evidence of that.
As the vote returns indicate, those of us in our early 30s and younger are ready. The older a voter is, the less likely they are to vote for Obama . That's the bad news. The good news is he is still getting about 50% of the vote. In 8 years it will be voters 40 and younger who he can count on. The oldest voters will expire and all of todays 5th graders will be of voting age. The children of the those 35-40 year olds who are open to a candidate of any race.
In those 8 years Obama can build himself up into an unbeatable candidate. He will have his choice of administration positions. Perhaps Secretary of State? Then in 2016 he will walk into the nomination uncontested. No more questions about experience. The race factor diminished. Wright a distant memory. Iraq behind us. An improved economy.
We need to start thinking long term.
In eight years, it may be too late. This from someone who has voted since 1972. Don't let old farts rule the world, it will stink.
I just do not understand how someone could endorse Obama when he has never sponsored a bill in the Senate, yet people claim he has this unspent charisma! He ran for president with only 1 year in the Senate. Most people would call that a grasping arrogance, and it is when you consider his only associates are people like Reverend Wright.
People do not want a president - they want a lackey. You have to believe in leadership, or not. If you want incompetance in office, vote for Obama. He would be like Bush W, without the oil companies.
Hillary is the real thing, Obama is the echo.
>> I just do not understand ...
That's right. You don't understand. That is because you and Hillary don't listen. You just blah, blah, blah, about anything that comes into your head without any critical thinking.
Just like a Republican, without the integrity. Which is negligible at best.
dgscol
You do not have a clue. So you would rather have the liar win the Democrats nomination? That is what the Republicans want. They want the weaker candidate so that they can bring up all of that baggage. So they can unite there party. That is exactly what we need. A continuation of Bush. Hillary has already lost. Get with the program.
Here's an idea: Think before you speak (or post). Before you think, do some research and attempt to learn something about your chosen topic. This will give you something to discuss that you didn't make up yourself. Since the inaccuracies in your post are so extreme, perhaps I'll just refer you to the Library of Congress: http://tho mas.loc.go v/. If you check it, you'll note that Obama has sponsored 122 bills in the current Congress alone (since Jan '07, more if you go back to '05, when he was inaugurated as a Senator. If you want to support Clinton, that's fine. Just don't lie about her opponent to justify your support.
Perhaps in eight years we would know if the O-man has any actual political talent.
Noumenon PART I, It reads as though you think we should look to lowest-com mon-denomi nator, popular-culture behaviour like Michael Richards' to enlighten (rather, darken) our moral and political decisions. I trust some young folks possess more depth of analysis and critical thinking.
I'm for Obama. What about having a backbone, and voting one's conscience? What about the notion of it being preferable to lose with Obama than win with Clinton? You advocate, "The devil you know is better than the devil you don't know." I have already argued that if you can't see Obama's advantages and who he is in the best sense, you don't really know who you are and/or you have a poor grasp of history. That statement does not include honest political disagreement with Obama's policies.
--Continued--
Some of YOU might just be starting to think long-term. However, I am a 53-year-old white woman. Do not presume to speak for me. I've been thinking long-term since I could vote--actually, before I could vote. Folks, EVERY election is a critical election whether you notise or not. I've had to vote for the lesser of two evils more than I ever wanted to. All it got us was George Jr. I will no longer enable this kind of thinking.
Noumenon PART II: I have similarly aged female friends, white and black, single and married, who are also for Obama. I've stopped writing the MSM about our existence because of its futility.
The Clintons are at the predictable, interminable Democratic end of the continuum of modern craven political strategy that Lee Atwater put on steroids. They are a legacy of the Reagan Revolution. It was devolution. The Great Communicator acted. He did not communicate. People these days are so vacuous many mis-took what Reagan said for communication. My now 88-year-old father, who mostly votes Republican yet votes differently according to conscience, saw it immediately: "Reagan is a phony." The Clintons are too complex to dismiss them merely as being "phonies." It is obvious they are craven. They are expert liars.
No one seems to remember that, before he died an untimely death from brain cancer, Atwater publicly apologized to Michael Dukakis for Willie Horton. He publicly denounced, repudiated, and repented--morally and politically--the tactics he so ably amped and integrated for the Republican Big Tent. Rove owes his career to Atwater.
From the standpoint of political analysis, Obama's time to run is now. Whatever future he has beyond this presidential election, I recoil in horror and embarrassment to think of Sen. Clinton in the White House as president.
--End--
Thank you Julia, you rock.
