Cell Phone Etiquette -- How Bad Are Your Manners?

Posted: 07/13/2012 3:18 pm

We know that digital manners could probably use some improvement, as three out of four people think cell phone etiquette has gotten worse in the past two years. But did you know that 10 percent of singles under 25 text during sex and 15 percent of adults actually answer their mobile phone during sex?

This latest infographic from OnlineCollege.org shows that 3.5 million text messages are sent per minute. It's no wonder that people everywhere are breaking the Rules of Netiquette without knowing there were even rules to begin with. Eavesdropping on someone's conversation on their mobile phone isn't a challenge anymore as it appears that people talk three times louder while using their cell phones.

As a netiquette expert, it doesn't surprise me that 90 percent of cell phone users think they have good mobile manners. Do you?

Remember, your mobile phone isn't always an accessory and you shouldn't go into a panic attack if your battery dies. Unless you're expecting a call from the president of the United States or need a liver transplant, sometimes it's good to take a digital break from the constant chaos.

My only faux pas is using my phone while dining (usually only with family or with the husband), usually only to take pictures for future posts or tweets.

It's common to want to check in on four-square or take a photo of your beautiful meal to post in Instagram. I usually tell people to ask who they are with if they mind if they do so. Everyone isn't always on the same digital page.

I'm an instructor.  I gave up long ago setting rules for cell phone use in my class.  I couldn't care less if you text, call out or even receive a call.   But my policy is I am not re-covering the material you missed while on the phone and I am not answering your questions on the material you missed while pre occupied.  You are simply SOL.

Have other teachers in your class discussed this issue? Is there a school-wide policy on texting during a course? I agree, it's gotten out of hand.

No wonder today's young have no manners or respect. That is SO RUDE to you as the instructor AND it's a distraction to the other class members and therefore rude to them. If they want to text, it's still disrespectful and rude to you the instructor, but you can't be policing since it's quiet and have more important things occupying your attention, BUT CALLING and SPEAKING in class ??!! NAHHH !!! Get out of class I say, and turn OFF the phone before entering or GET OUT.
