Tijuana is Los Angeles' naughty cousin. Angelenos call the town TJ and visit only when their better angels are on smoke break. Over the last few years, the town has gotten more desperate as drug wars have strained the muscle of the Mexican state and the American economy, which trickles down tequila shot by tequila shot, dried up.

I headed to to Tijuana to photograph the city's street life and, in particular, Avenida Consitucion, the throbbing artery of downtown. Vice was never far away, but I had expected that.

I was more surprised by what seems to be a militantly virtuous minority.

There are the nuns at Hospital Sagrado Corazon who provide free medical care to those who can't afford it. And finally there are the people who brought me alka seltzer for my upset stomach when I stumbled into a random bar on a Saturday night. That one act of kindness became the context for the my pictures of life on Tijuana's streets.
