Buck Up People... Progressives WON!
Part One of A Three Part Series...

No, I am not playing the popular elementary school game of Opposites Day. Its true. Progressives won in the 2010 mid-term elections.

As touching as it was to see Boehner choke up over the retelling of his hard-knock life story of having to be a waiter in his dad's bar, tears are not so attractive on the faces of Progressives this morning. Did we all miss the news flash? PROGRESSIVES WON! A significant exception is of course the tragic loss of Sen. Russ Feingold (WI) and the sad loss of prinicpled Representative Alan Grayson (FL). But, the Congressional Progressive Caucus, the largest caucus in the House Democratic Caucus at over 80 members, emerged virtually unscathed, losing only three members.

By constrast, the conservative Blue Dog Democratic caucus was more than sliced in half from 54 members to only 26. Further, of the 34 conservative Dems who voted against Obama's Healthcare Reform, a mere 12 won re-election.

Dead weight gone. Good Riddance. The blame for the stalemate to come can now fall squarely where it belongs... on the anti-progressive, anti-democratic, anti-populist Republican members of Congress.

Our work is now finally beginning. The veil of a happy Democratic governing majority is finally lifted. We didn't have it then; we don't have it now. But what we do have now is a more solidly progressive bunch of Dems and a President presumably less-encumbered by the false illusion that playing nice will get him a date with the other team.

Let's thank Grayson, Hall and Hare for their principled time in office. Let's get Feingold on the ticket as VP in 2012, let's throw our support unabashedly behind the Congressional Progressive Caucus and let's push Obama to finally do the right thing through as many Executive Orders as we can present to him.

People... Progressives WON!!! Republicans are all over the map, are a mess and won't be able to wreak the havoc they seek. We should be energized. We must be energized. Too much is at stake. The road ahead isn't so bad as long as we have the big picture and the fighting spirit spurring us on. Progressives will be the heroes in 2012. Let's make Obama one too.

Please see the next in this 3-Part Series: Who Gives A Rat's Rear End If Progressives on the Hill Won?

Good perspective except as it addresses Al Grayson. Al resorted to dirty campaigning. I like to believe that progressives are a thinking bunch who are turned off by Rove like tactics. I believe that was a factor.

Progressives did not win. They will win when they can convince the conservative democratic members to vote their way on issues that progressives support then get those same conservatives reelected. Then progressives will have won. Right now the Democrats must finance all democratic members for reelection plus new candidates to challenge weak republicans. Money is the name of the game in US politics these days. If progressives want to win and change conservatives Democratic members votes show them the money!

The Congressional Progressive Caucus may not have achieved all "we" want, and individual members have taken some bad positions, but the short answer is that millions of poor people have been lifted out of, and kept out of, poverty because the CPC has been willing to champion good policies that stem from our social movements, analysis and anti-poverty advocacy. We would be worse off without them and a good many of us who favor anti-poverty measures would be a great deal more demoralized if they had lost in large numbers. To maintain both integrity and seats in the face of fear, republican manipulation of that fear, and especially in the face of Citizens United, is, in my opinion, quite a win. Overall our agenda, our policies suffer a terrible blow. But I am thankful that good members hung on the way they did. Its not nearly enough. But its not nothing either.

I believe we need our own party. The DNC does not recognize the progressive electorate as significant. Look at the message they took away from the election. We must have tried to do too much ? They even threw their weight behind the blue dogs instead of trying to back the peoples choice. The DNC looks at progressives the same way the RNC looks at the Tea Party.

If progressives won, at what cost to the Democratic party as a whole. If the Republicans have the same success that they just had, two years from now, then progressives will have won nothing. It is simply wrong to keep strategizing about how you can make progressives stronger while sacrificing the current administration. Progressives winning instead of the party as a whole winning, is a recipe for disaster. I have been a Democrat for almost 40 years and I can tell you this progressive aggression is not good for our party or our country. It will guarantee permanent Republican control of our Government.

Just keep winning like that every election and everyone will be happy campers, with redistricting you may just get your wish.

The #1 statement in the comments here is that 2012 will be a young person's election. The Repubs know that and are very scared. Most young people do NOT ascribe to the Republibaggers agenda. The President will be on the ballot again and more people will vote. That is why McConnell is saying that they want 2012. Forget all of the people's problems TODAY; they could care less about people's jobs. All they want is power for themselves and their rich friends.

The Repub-led House will be a disaster and nothing will get done. People didn't even vote on the conservative agenda--they had a "kick the bums out" election.

Progressives need to please stop licking their wounds and blaming the Prez and mount a massive long-view campaign to get the message out. Today, tomorrow, and every day.

With the Blue Dogs gone, it is our chance to get moderate to liberal Dems ready for next time while we continue to let people know that only with the Dems will their interests be met--today AND tomorrow.

I agree! And young folks need to be inspired as they were in 2008. Privatization of Social Security, Socking it to the Poor, Taking them off their parents health insurance plan, Lining the Pockets of WallStreet bankers and CEOs isn't going to inspire them. Bold action on saving our planet, closing the enormous income gap between the super rich and the rest of us, ensuring a career with good benefits for them and their future families, increasing direct democratic participation and instilling the nation once again with a sense of fairness can. should. and must.

Let the games begin! Toughen up Obama. Independents who support you are sick of your bipartisan efforts which have not worked! Toughen up or we stay home in 2012!

The loss of Feingold was a terrible blow. Secret Corporate $ killed him. We need to overturn Citizens United.
What say we start a Draft Feingold for VP in 2012 campaign??

You will not overturn Citizens United with a GOP house. The Democrats need to change their money game. Next election will be all about the money!

Each day, one progressive needs to hold a press conference and talk about the dirty tricks and manipulations of the Republicans. Each needs to use harsh terms and pull no punches when doing so. This needs to be done every single day and 3 times on Friday. In this way, progressives may be able to wrest control of the news cycles away from the Republicans.

Progressives really messed up when they allowed the destruction of ACORN. Don't do the same for NPR. Protect NPR and bolster it if possible.

Progressives are now powerless to move any of their legislation out of the House (not that support by only 20% of the electorate represents much power to begin with). Enjoy your victory!
08:19 AM on 11/04/2010
Since Dems kept Senate and there is a President with veto power, the Repub House can pass all kinds of legislation like the Dem House did. Most of those laws did not make it past the Senate. Guess what? The Dems can also filibuster. It is not only Repubs who care authorized to use. I think the Dems should execute a filibuster on everything the House sends forwarded. The Repubs did over 100 filibusters in two years. Never before has a party so abused the process.

they are, they were. But their agenda and integrity is something that I believe resonates with the public. The question for those of us who consider ourselves progressives, it seems to me, is to figure out how to translate what polls tell us is broad support for pieces of the progressive agenda--e.g. quality affordable healthcare for all, decent standard of living, good education and sufficient nutrition for our children, social security to keep our elderly and disabled out of poverty, income supports to help when jobs are lost and scarce...into policy that is the no-brainer it should be on Capitol Hill. We have ceded so much to Republican fear-mongering that encourages the average American to vote against her or his own interest...

What an excellent point, Ms Dolan!

Too bad Mr Grayson had a permanent facial expression which suggested he'd much rather kick the crap out of people than legislate - I think he scared voters.

And definitely GOOD RIDDANCE to the Blue Dogs, who tried to supply politics to people a step above the American Taliban - but not a large step. We are much better off without them (talking to you too, Evan Bayh!).

What is disheartening to me at the moment is - we want to supply smart government, and so many Americans are simply not very smart. If you can't see at a glance that huge corporations buying up all the politicians they need is a bad thing - or that twisting the Constitution to make it fit the Old Testament is stupid beyond belief - you're simply not going to "get" anything a Progressive has to say.

Someone on Olbermann tonight said this was an election where old voters came out in droves. Well - they are set in their ways - we're never going to convince them that Rick Scott is a sociopath, or that Obama is an American. But 2012 will be a young person's election, and the Old Testament-encrusted crud of the American Taliban is not going to sit well with them!

So we'll keep pushing and educating - see what happens!

Thanks Eric. I also think that we need to pay more attention to people's emotions. Its not enough, I don't think, to simply lament a lack of political education. But progressives need to be as open to hearing and healing pains and fears as the Republicans come across as being. The Republicans exploit that pain and fear in a way that blinds people to the political realities. But sometimes I think that we progressives ignore that pain and fear, which also blinds people to the political realities. You know?
05:39 PM on 11/04/2010
Thanks Karen!

I think the only emotions the Baggers use are fear and anger, which is why I really appreciated Colberts "counter-rally"!

And I think I get what you're saying - that it's not ALL about intellect - but the Repubs are infuriatingly fact free.

As for the Dem emotional message, "We don't want you to beg in the streets while Republicorp rolls naked in your money" is a pretty emotional message.

Thanks for your positive spirit, Karen - I'll be following your blogs with great interest!
04:00 PM on 11/04/2010
Progressives need to learn how to make the message simple; no one wants to get a lecture. And the statements like "and so many Americans are simply not very smart" need to be avoided at all costs.

The progressive Dem caucus is the element of the Democratic party that brought the election results about. To suggest otherwise is fantasy. Many will be up for re-election in 2012 and if you don’t think they learned a lesson last night you’re mistaken. There will still be some that will stay the progressive course, but most will moderate in order to save their political hide.

Sam, I am not as cynical about that as you are. These are, by and large, a very stalwart and principled bunch. They make political compromises, sure. But less so than most, and I really believe that their constituents see and value this. Its a very difficult position to be in. They don't get the big oil money, the big defense money, the big secret money. Yet they consistently vote for the little guy and the average woman and the hungry child...I admire that....

It's weird. Teabaggers tilted at windmills in this election, not actual dragons. The pattern I've been seeing is that the Blue Dogs would pass some legislation, and the teabaggers would accuse them of a leftist agenda when they were being anything but leftist. Like health care reform. It's pro-corporatist through and through. But the teabaggers called it socialism and accused Obama of trying to pass a government health care plan--I guess they meant something like single-payer. Uh, what? So the Blue Dogs were trying to pose as progressives, and the teabaggers took them *seriously,* meanwhile the actual progressives were ignored, and they weren't exactly silent about *their* agenda, either.

I'm confused as to what this all means. Is there going to be another round of purging when voters figure out who the actual progressives are? Or were they already aware of that and punishing the Blue Dogs for acting like Republicans? Only time will tell.
