An Upside to the 'War on Women'?

Posted: 04/24/2012 4:13 pm

Women's issues have been all over the media lately, and not for all the right reasons. Birth control, abortion rights, the Rush Limbaugh Sandra Fluke 'slut' comment controversy, Hilary Rosen's comments on Ann Romney never working a day in her life -- it's really enough to make your head spin. (At least we have one more woman on Forbes' list of billionaires, thanks to Spanx inventor Sara Blakely, which had The Story Exchange staff cheering.)

I overheard some young women talking about these issues on the train the other day and that got me thinking... Is there an upside to the so-called "war on women"? Could it be mobilizing a new generation of women leaders? I decided to contact some prominent women representing the interests of other women to find out. Here's what they told me.

Katherine Spillar, Executive Editor, Ms. Magazine

2012-04-24-KathySpillar_cropped.jpg "This has energized and reinvigorated women to take up the fight for women's rights. You see it on college campuses and in women's organizations nationwide. A few weeks ago at our annual National Young Feminist Leadership Conference in Washington, DC, we had over 550 students attend representing 146 colleges across the country. It was the biggest conference yet.

Young women are strategizing and organizing for women's equality... There is anger and outrage that in 2012 we are fighting for birth control access and abortion rights, and campuses across the country are on fire about these issues. Any time these issues hit the front pages it reminds women of all ages that we have still not reached full equality, whether in the work place or in politics. And women can see that it's overwhelmingly men in state legislatures and Congress who are proposing laws that will restrict women's rights.

At the conference, a number of young feminist leaders have said that they are now inspired to run for office after graduation. Women make up only 17% of the U.S. Congress, but according to The Center for American Women and Politics, a record number of women have registered to run for Congress this year."

2012-04-24-GinaRobisonBillups_cropped.jpg Gina Robison-Billups, Founder and CEO, National Association for Moms in Business

"I have not seen a real upside to the 'war on women' and Hilary Rosen's unfortunate choice of words describing Ann Romney has reignited the so-called mommy wars. That is a shame, because what is really needed is a new conversation that shows women they need to be treated fairly.

The bias against women in the workplace isn't as upfront as it was years ago. It is more hidden, so women don't feel it. We are earning more, getting more college degrees and life is comparatively easier today. Still, there's definitely a mommy bias in the work place. Many think that if you're a mom, you're not as dedicated to your career, so they're not going to invest in you.

If you look at women entrepreneurs today, many started at the kitchen table with their children at their feet. Most successful mom entrepreneurs can attest to sleeping three or four hours a night. We are trying to cram two full time jobs into one. If mom business owners had better access to funding, then their jobs wouldn't be so hard. Women need more relevant support from government organizations and non-profits."

2012-04-24-Caroline_Ghosn_cropped.jpg Caroline Ghosn, Founder & CEO, The Levo League

"The one and only upside of the current situation is that it's catalyzing discussions within Generation Y and fostering a sense of urgency for young women to become more actively involved in politics -- across party lines. In that way it's a blessing in disguise...

If you think about it, Gen Y are just in their first years as members of the work force. We're learning what types of adults we want to be, and how to balance our family and work life. The benefit for us of the current climate, given that we're at an earlier point on the learning curve in our lives, is that we realize the importance of action in politics, and in other areas as well.

This has spillover effects into other issues, such as the professional life of women. Last week, April 17th, was Equal Pay Day. We worked with several groups to promote awareness of the wage gap and informed women on how to better negotiate a raise. There's an increasing appetite for discussing these issues in our generation, and that's what we want to foster."

2012-04-24-JulieWeeks.jpeg Julie Weeks, President and CEO, Womenable

"The first reaction to this most recent 'war on women' is one of disappointment and heaving a deep sigh. But on the upside, it can be a galvanizing point. It should certainly drive home the point that, in politics, there is no such thing as a "war to end all wars" -- politics is ever-changing and requires constant vigilance.

And there are many fronts to this war. Right now the House of Representatives Small Business Committee has proposed to eliminate funding for the SBA's Women Business Center program, arguing that it is duplicative of other business assistance efforts.

But we who are advocates for women entrepreneurship know that research has clearly shown the unique value of the WBC program and that its relational style of delivering services makes it quite unique when compared with Small Business Development Centers and SCORE."

2012-04-24-kolbert_kolbert.jpg Kathryn Kolbert, Director of Barnard College's Athena Center for Leadership Studies, Columbia University

"With the recent attacks on women's rights, the right has re-emerged with its most draconian agenda since 1992, the last time we saw sustained policy attacks on women. The fact that we are having to refight many of the battles we have won in the past is disturbing.

The fact that the right has enough power in Congress and state legislatures to eliminate contraceptive programs for women is depressing. Even in the days when we fought attacks on abortion rights, we had enough votes to defeat attacks on contraception.

I think the upside of the recent attacks is that young women who were born in the 1980s and 1990s are becoming more interested politically. There is a lot of debate and discussion going on right now in the feminist blogs, you can't miss it. Young women are angry, and anger leads to action."

Will the GOP TP "War on Women" (which Sen. John McCain denies) " and

Willard Mitt Romney's Adviser and his;
"Who Cares" attitude towards Women only earning " 77 percent of what a Man makes for similar work"
Bring more Women towards continuing the fight related to Women's Economic and Health issues in the 21st Century, I say YES.

And it will bring Men in also, because of the economic/health benefits that Women have now. Family planning involves Two People.

One item that I haven't seen in the "Hufpo" yet is the recent change in the US Marine Corps related to more Job Opportunities within the Service being opened up to Women. Some include being directly inside Combat Zones. Not that Women since 9/11 have not been in theses areas.

This was one reason why Phyllis Schafley organized against the "Equal Rights Amendment" in the 1970's thus stalling the Women's Movement. Back then her concern was that Women would be drafted and sent off to Combat. 9/11 Changed that.

Still, more needs to be done in changing what the Koch Bothers funded "Front" organization, their American Legislative Exchange Council-ALEC, which has been the one pushing over 400 Bills against Women in the 24 or so GOP Controlled States.

The Koch Brothers are also espousing their John Birch Society Values of their Daddy, on the US whether we like it or not.

Finally, notice how silent the GOP Women in Congress are about these issues? Why?

Well, this blogpost has certainly generated a lot of emotional responses. I would certainly agree with Eileen that there is a positive correlation between political inclusion and the advancement of women's social and economic rights. In recent years, though - not only in the US but elsewhere - some gains have definitely been reversed. While some may quibble with the usage of the word "war," the trends and recent actions are clearly anti-women.

I wish that when a political party or politicians or some powerful male establishment entity decided to abrogate women's issues and relegate them to a back burner, that everywhere - all over the World - women would galvanize and fight to do something against it.. As it is, at least there's some hope for American women if this article is accurate... We need to vote the bums out of office! We have voices, we need to have people listen to them! We have opinions, we need to make people aware of them! We have so much that is wonderful, we need to have people believe in them! ...But first of all we need to believe in them ourselves!!!
10:58 PM on 04/27/2012
Galvanize and fight? LOL, I'm sorry. That's funny. Here, let me set down my nursing infant so I can go to war over absolutely nothing worthwhile, because I'm a woman and other women are telling me I should be mad that our already outrageously feminist country still doesn't worship women quite as much as you think that they should. Riiiiiight. All this nonsense is not in pursuit of equality, it's in pursuit of superiority. This is why the ratio of women and children to men that died in the Titanic is so drastically different from the ratio in the recent ship-sinking. Thanks for making the world a safer place for us by your hatred for men and femininity.

Tell it to the women who can't afford birth control thanks to the male-dominated GOP.

This is the attack of religion on women, while they ignore the catholic mexican drug cartels, ignored all through history the catholic mafia, ignoring and trying to create a diversion from the permissive pedophelic priests and their superiors who simply moved them from place to place, and the followers of the church who repeatedly handed these beasts their own children. The religious right ignores the issues of the wholesale murder and rape of women and children in this country, and never addresses this issue. Yet it somehow sees fit to attack women's rights to rule their own bodies. Despicable. I say we have to protest religion where it lives. Attack superstition and evil when it attacks us.
01:01 PM on 04/27/2012
You are way off. Without all the Catholic hospitals, charities, and organizations out there the world, and the women in it, would be suffering a whole lot worse. Watch what will happen if all these organizations have to shut down because of the birth control mandate. Watch how many jobs will be lost, homeless people uncared for, etc. All because feminists think that by the Church's refusal to fund a slap in the face to God (the CREATOR Who we trust to do His job just fine... no need for pills and nonsense). The Church is not trying to pass laws that would make the pill illegal, which is what all of you crazy feminists seem to think. She simply does not want to pay for your cancer causing, slap in God's face. And She should not have to.

What you breeders are doing is a slap in God's face. Overrunning his Garden, driving his creatures to extinction because we cannot share the planet, destroying the remaining wildlands for greed and profit.

So don't be too quick to judge those who don't want to spend their lives pooting out offspring that were unplanned, unexpected, unaffordable.

Carry on. Nature will take care of you if you won't take care of yourselves.

Every other day, it seems, the Huffpost is publishing articles on how women are surpassing men in every area, and yet there is a "war on women" (oh, the hyperbole!). There is political spin going on here, me thinks.

In the 60s and 70s, women fought for equal rights - equal pay, job opportunities, and reproductive choice. Women also were discovering their sexual identity and freedom. The idea that you had to get married and raise children or that you would only go to college to find a man or only get a secretary job until you got married slowly was pushed out the window.

In the 80s, feminism acquired a stigma of homely, man-hating, non-sexual women.

In the 90s and 00s, I think Generation X and Y has taken it for granted the choices that we have. We don't have to get married, have children, we can major in math and science, and get careers alongside men, we can wear pants - all those things our mother's fought for we have taken for granted. Now our eyes are being opened by bigoted old white men who want to control our lives and our bodies. We can't take birth control, women's health, access to abortions, equal pay, and the ability to become mothers without fear of losing our jobs for granted anymore.

It's time for a new image of a feminist - it's a woman who is educated, a professional, has an equal relationship with her significant other, and most importantly she has a choice about how to manage her reproductive health, have children, work/life balance, and who she chooses to spend her time with.

I would love to believe that younger women see the need to coalesce as they realize there is a war on women -- but I don't see it. Instead, I see younger women compete equally for the few jobs availabe and often win the position only to find out a few years later that gender bias still pervades our corporate culture in America. Yes, a few women are breaking through and I am one of the first to applaud them but if we don't start making better progress it will be decades -- yes decades before we even come close to equality in America. Cutting any programs for women is unconscionble and women need to speak up as once we lose programs it takes years to fight to have them recovered. There is a gender bais in America and anyone who doesn't see it wears blinders. I beg women to unite and fight the war on women -- women in business, stay at home Moms, senior women, all women we have more in common with each other and understand our issues more completely than the men who claim to represent us or want our votes.

Maybe women are not "breaking through" because we don't want to. Ever think of that? There is plenty of gender bias against men going on.

and YOUR post here is one of the most cynical and downright shameless attempts to obfuscate by a right-wing excuser that I've ever had the misfortune to read. The rolling back of a woman's rights to her own autonomy and the inherent right to privacy between herself and her doctor. The further intrusion into her private matters regarding contraception while claiming they're unnecessary for her healthcare even though countless prescriptions are written FOR necessary medical needs (all the while ceaselessly funding Viagra and Cialis --drugs prescribed to attain erections for males and for no other reason). Passing laws with NO exceptions for rape and incest victims. Uh huh. No war on women? In a pig's eye! Go peddle your horse manure somewhere else.
02:34 PM on 04/26/2012
Well, I'm liberal and I have to say, there isn't really a "War on Women" per se ... It's just that Women are suffering the brunt of the Conservative "Moral Policing of America".

Conservatives don't like abortion, pre-marital sex, homosexuals, recreational drug use and anything else that doesn't conform to their idea of 'normal behavior'.

In an attempt to stop pre-marital sex, they have made it harder to get abortions, condoms while in school (they preach abstinence instead), prescriptions for Plan B and Day After Pill etc.

In an attempt to stop abortions, they have made the procedure more frustrating than it needs to be. At one point, they even told doctors to inform potential mothers that the procedure could cause cancer.

I think their opposition to homosexuality and recreational drug use speaks for itself. Not that I am for or against either.

In any case, I think the sensationalist "War on Women" nonsense needs to stop. We're just a country that's divided on fundamental moral issues, and as a result some people (mostly Women) are suffering the brunt of it.

Instead of arguing for Women (as most of us are doing), we need to draw the hard line where government's authority has overreached its bounds. This fundamentalist christian nonsense has got to stop. It's only when that ends that we will all be free.

But continue taking the "Man vs Woman" approach if you'll prefer.

I really really hope so. I keep telling the girls in my classes (high school teacher) that they are the majority (52%) of the population and if they all get together and vote as a bloc - they can take control of the government

I also tell them that would be a GOOD thing ( lets see what they do with it - after all - itwould be a damned sight harder to do WORSE than the men :) )

I am glad to see some comments here from men who are supporting women and who are disturbed by the current political atmosphere. It is important to remember that many (most?) men do not want to see women's rights taken away. It is not a war between the genders, but rather a war between right wing politicians and women's rights. It's very encouraging to see men stand up for their wives and daughters
