Women and Wine: Pass the Rosé

A new study out today has found that moderate alcohol consumption may help prevent bone loss in women.

I can't imagine receiving better news -- although I'm still hoping that the definition of moderate will increase to more than one or two drinks per day.

Since wine is good for my bones, I need to drink more of it, so I called on wine expert Lysanne Tusar -- who started 8th Estate, the first and only winery in Hong Kong -- to find out what she suggests I drink on these hot summer days. Here's what Lysanne said:

"Rosé is the best summer refreshing drink around. Rosé has the ability to offer more complexity and character than some white wines and offers a wide range of options; from crisp and dry to sweet and fruity. It's only become really popular in this part of the world [Asia] recently, but rosé has always been the go-to drink of choice throughout wine regions in Europe in the summer.

It's also quite diverse in food pairing options -- the dryer ones pair up well with fish and herbs, the sweeter ones are excellent with spicier cuisine. And of course rosé is very easy all by itself, it doesn't get better than drinking a chilled rosé on the patio in the summer heat!"

Canadian Lysanne Tusar sold all her possessions -- and left her boyfriend -- moving to Asia where she set up Hong Kong's first and only winery. WATCH to see how she did it:

I've tried this recipe before for rosé sangria and it was awesome. The best thing about using a rosé in sangria is that it heightens the focus on the fruit components of wine -- very refreshing on a hot day.

Preparing Rosé Sangria

Ingredients:

1 bottle of rosé wine (use either a dry or sweet Rosé to adjust it to your taste)
1 cup sliced strawberries
1 cup fresh raspberries
4 cups of ginger ale
1/3 cup sugar (not needed if the rosé is on the sweet side)
1 lemon (sliced)
1 lime (sliced)
1 orange (sliced)

Optional: after serving, add a splash of Prosecco or any sparkling wine for a dash of bubbles.

Pour wine into a large pitcher and add the strawberries, raspberries, orange slices and sugar. Cover and let "marinate" overnight in the refrigerator. Add ginger ale, ice and sliced lemon and lime just before serving. Add sparkling wine to taste.

If you make that sangria tonight, it will be ready for the weekend. Cheers!
