My Friend the Toad

I wondered what it was like to be such a squooshy being, and he perhaps wondered why I was so big.

Just now, swimming under the moon, alongside the palms, rush of ocean beyond, crickets in the grass, I came across a little squooshy brown creature in the dark.

He was hopping alongside the pool, in the shadow, and stopped still when I swam to his side.

He stared at me, I stared at him. He had big bulging eyes. I said hello and told him he was as strange as I, that while he might be a hopper, I was a walker.

In response, he stared.

We stared for a long time, me daring him to hop away first, and he daring me to swim away first.

I believe we were mutually fascinated about our different walks (hops) of life, since this went on for quite some time, until the moon rose above us.

I wondered what it was like to be such a squooshy being, and he perhaps wondered why I was so big.

I must admit our entente lasted nearly an hour or so... one of the nice things about Mexico is the time you can take to really enjoy a conversation.

Eventually I paddled to the right, and he hopped to the left. Six big huge sqooshy hops!
