After all the shared shock, elation on the left, recriminations on the right and confusion in the middle, we'll find there's no one warming up in the batting cage and no one sitting on the bench. I mean it, who is there? For that matter, what is there? We'll likely be trading philosophical treachery for a philosophical void. We can't leave things as they are, but where are we going? One approach is a kind of -- If we build it, they'll come. All we need is a new playing field. Things will get wholesome. Businesses will stop running the country and the individual will once again matter the most. There'll be no more titans, no masters of the universe. Anyone with a conflict of interest won't get elected and elections won't be bought or manipulated. Journalists won't evade because they'll be fired, saving us all a lot of speculation about why they did it. Our new leaders will be courageous, bold defenders of freedom unwilling to put someone else's child in harm's way unless theirs go along. Being a "wartime president" will come to be associated with a failure to negotiate peace and discrimination will disappear along with tax favors. Nominations to the Supreme Court will be the best and the brightest the legal profession has to offer. Religion will go back into the churches, synagogues and mosques, God won't take sides, and if the bird flu does come, we'll ALL get vaccinated -- starting with the most needy. Amazing what a few small indictments and a vivid imagination can do.
