An Open Letter To President Obama

Posted: 05/10/2012 12:59 pm

Mr. President,

My toddler son met you in Iowa in 2007 at Tom Harkin's Annual Steak Fry. You were greeting the crowd at the fence and came over to say hello to my family. You asked me and my partner, knowingly, if we were his parents and we said yes. You nodded and took our son in your arms. You both regarded each other, and, with a broad smile, you said, sincerely and warmly, "He's beautiful."

That moment now hangs on the wall in the room of our biracial, adopted son because of all of the possibility it represents. It's the possibility that a brown-skinned man can become the President of the United States. It's the possibility that one can be anything, despite challenging odds, but especially when assisted by love and unconditional support. It's the possibility of the difference that one mom (let alone two) can make in a young man's life, especially if he'll never really know his birth father.

I crossed paths with you again at an event in Washington, DC in 2011. As a lesbian living in Virginia with her partner of 19 years and a young son who sees his moms as married, rather than "married," I could have listed all of the things I still wanted from you. Instead, I thanked you for all of the little things you've done to support same-sex couples, including partnership recognition for federal employees. But I especially wanted you to know that I appreciated deeply your leadership on Don't Ask, Don't Tell.

And on an otherwise unremarkable day -- May 9, 2012 -- you touched my heart again when you 'came out' and said publicly that you have come to believe that same-sex couples deserve more than civil unions and should be allowed to marry legally.

It was a moment of honesty above the din of political parsing, and a moment that embraced what our children understand about love and commitment, pure and simple. In that moment, as you spoke, I couldn't find words to replace the tears welling up in my eyes for this gift. Not unlike the first time we met, you embraced my family -- including others like us and generations to come -- in a deeply significant way.

Your words in support of same-sex marriage, Mr. President, were beautiful.

This was and is a beautiful story, Thank You for Sharing it with us. Prayerfully may I direct attention to an article I happened upon the other day after the President made his announcement.

To quote a little from it: "we know that (being gay) is a fact that exists, and we must understand it in its purest form: that is, a person should have the freedom to use his body in whatever way he wants." -Huey Newton-August 15 1970, co-founder of the Black Panther Party.

Like all human integration issues, it's the personal experiences w/those unlike ourselves that become the most compelling.http://www.kabbanet.ro

I find this story very touching. It is simply amazing how people have allowed hate and anger to drive their hearts. I am a heterosexual white woman from Wyoming. My heart and my Christian beliefs tell me to love my neighbor, not judge others and I embrace both. I love this story because our President has found a way to make citizens of this country, for the first time in history, feel recognition, acceptance and love. I commend him for making his statement and I look forward to the day that all citizens of our wonderful nation are able to experience equality. With that equality come benefits (over 1100 of them, by the way) as well as liabilities (for medical care, expenses for divorces, etc...) But equality to all citizens is the ultimate goal. It is promised in the constitution, yet ignored for people that hide behind religion. It must end... Thank you for sharing this letter and thank you for inspiring me this morning!!!

I love people but I cannot go along with the sin of homosexuality. Just like I cannot go along with the sin of lying, stealing, cheating, fornication, murder, killing, deception and any other sin. So I just want all the homosexual community to know that I love you just like I do a voyager or a fornicator or liar. But I do hate sin even in myself. So please do not send me any blogs about me thinking that I am perfect and without sin because as long as we live in these nautral bodies we will sin even if it's an unholy thought. And I do pray for the mind of Christ to dwell in me richly. And I love everyone including the homosexuals just as God does. God bless my President and all of you homosexuals.

I have had three great gifts in the realm of race in my life (aside from the norms of life in the military, that is...). The first was living in a minority - majority community, where I WAS in the minority, for the first time in my life, and I had to adjust to my neighbors, instead of the reverse. And second, I was called to be Pastor of a multi-racial community. For a Lutheran pastor, because our theological heritage is in Germany and Scandinavia, our congregations tend to be mostly white...but my parish, located just outside Washington, DC, included not just token minorities, but some of the most active and important (in their commitments, not necessarily in their dollars) families were minorities. I so wish I could have been with them on the day of President Obama's Inaugural. (I may go there for his second, if there is one.

The third gift is that I worked at Borders during the 2008 election. The day after the election, we sold out everything and anything that connected with the President Elect and his family, newspapers, etc. And for many families, many of who were not black, but Asians and Hispanics, this election meant that truly, THEIR kids, too, could hope to reach the pinnacles of their dreams.

I have been truly blessed in my life!

The exact same thing could be said about politicians who speak out against it, rallying the Christian Right.

Meaning that what the president came out in support of is what the citizens of our alleged democracy want?

Shocking! Scandalous, I tell you!!! How DARE HE?!?!? WHO DOES HE THINK HE IS TO LISTEN TO THE CITIZENS OF THIS COUNTRY AND SUPPORT WHAT THEY SUPPORT????????

Oh, wait. He's the president. We elected him, he works for US. That makes it kind of his job to do what we the people want, doesn't it? Unless of course it goes against our constitution, which this clearly does not. So tell me again why it matters if he did it for 'political gain?"
