The Eagles vs. the Censors: Poll Results

The issue: Censorship of the song "Life In The Fast Lane" from the Eagles' 1976 album Hotel California. The line in question:

We've been up and down this highway/
haven't seen a goddamn thing.

At radio station WBPT 106.9 FM in Birmingham, Alabama, program manager Mike Schoenherr (better known as Hurricane Shane) replaced the first syllable of the word "goddamn" with a lyric-less snippet of music from elsewhere in the song. The reason, according to WBPT general manager Ray Nelson: "People find it offensive." Asked to specify which people, he said, "Everybody."

One person who objected was Don Felder, the Eagles' guitarist from 1974-1980 and 1994-2001. Moreover, Felder suspected, "millions of people would object."

Hurricane Shane said in an e-mail: "I'd be happy to conduct on an online poll to gauge listener opinion, because after all the station is theirs not mine."

Birmingham Weekly put the issue to its readers, whose demographics are similar to those of WBPT's constituency. Nearly 3,000 responded to a questionnaire powered by internet polling service Wufoo. The results suggest that Felder is in tune with classic rock fans: More than 96% did not agree that the original version of "Life In The Fast Lane" is offensive.

Approximately 7,000 additional respondents, who took the poll on the Huffington Post, disagreed even more vehemently--at a rate of 98%.

How will WBPT respond? Hurricane Shane e-mailed only: "no comment at this time."

Nelson did not return a reporter's phone call.

An official at Glencoe, Alabama's WGMZ, whose version of the song replaces "goddamn" with silence, considered playing the original "at appropriate times," like late at night, as opposed to "the morning drive slot with children in the car."

Felder, who was brought up in the South with a strong Baptist background, allowed, "There are people who have extreme religious beliefs who would find [the original] offensive." In this case, "The radio station doesn't have the artistic license to change it." He added, "If they object to the song, they shouldn't play it, and they shouldn't be capitalizing on it--in a way, that's as much blasphemy as saying 'goddamn' itself."

BELOW: Votes in response to poll item "I find the original version of 'Life In The Fast Lane' offensive." (choices were 1 through 5; 1=don't agree at all; 5=agree strongly)

I'm torn. I am opposed to censorship, but, in the words of The Dude, "I hate the ****ing Eagles!"

Most classic rock stations only have a 12 song play list anyway. I can only take so much stairway-to-freebird.

another step toward culture wars

I remember back in 1976 when the song was first on the charts, that line was censored on radio (remember radio?). As was the line in Steve Miller's "Jet Airliner": "...don't want to get caught up in any of that funky s*%# going down in the city..." got changed to "funky kicks".
I thought 30-some years later we were over such trivial pursuits.
Plus, the thought occurs that anyone listening to a radio station with a playlist that includes Hotel California is probably old enough to have heard the GD word before, doncha think?

Walmart edits rock CDs. Guess they don't understand the language on some rap CDs.

Ridiculous! If that's the worst word some people have ever heard, they've been living a too-sheltered life.

"Haven't seen a goddamn thing" that illustrates that religion makes sense. Fundamentalism is what drives censorship...

Thank goodness that, in the morning drive slot, the childrens' (hopefully) virgin ears will still be protected from that word! As for the lyrics about outrageous parties, lines on the mirror, and taking pills, just tell your kids that these are birthdays at Chuck E. Cheese's, cool designs, and Flintstone vitamins.

Instead of censoring classic rock songs, for playing on a rock radio station no less, this station manager should perhaps rethink his career. Go back to the church choir maybe? So let me get this strait, he censors a classic song, the reason given it is offensive to listeners, to "everybody"? This statement on it's face is obviously bull droppings, subsequently proven so by the polling done, just in case any wooden headed folks needed to actually see a poll to know that. So the question is what the hell is this guy doing running a rock radio station in the first place? Wouldn't he be a better fit running a Christian rock radio station- oh wait, maybe there aren't many of those for the obvious reason there is no commercial viability in such a thing. For the minuscule percentage of people who answered the poll that they do find the word goddamn offensive in the Eagles song, how many of those people actually listen to rock radio do you think? That's why radios have this thing called a tuner which allows for changing stations. This guys in the wrong job. Hopefully his boss will see this and replace him
with someone who is a better fit for ROCK radio. I am sick to death of people like this shoving their twisted world views on the rest of us. I find YOU offensive Mike Schoenherr, how about we do a poll on that?

wow! I was gonna make a comment but, you just said it all!! I guess they won't play any Stones or Janis J on this station either. Lordy help them if a rap song gets on!!

This is just what we need in the south.....censuring of Classic Rock and allowing Rush full rein!

...I still love that old 70's Rush.

I wonder if they ever play Tull's Hymn 43?
