Since Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA accepts all dogs and cats, we get dogs and cats with all sorts of challenges -- and we do our very best to do right by each of them. Bessie, pictured here, underwent extensive veterinary treatment, testing, surgery and outside private medical consultation. We learned, in the end, that she is suffering from terminal, inoperable cancer.

Among our strengths as an organization, PHS/SPCA has over 1,400 volunteers without whom we'd be unable to do so much of our work for the animals. One of these wonderful people stepped forward to offer her home as the hospice for Bessie, and it is in this loving environment she will spend the time that she has left.

The picture came with the following message: "Just wanted to let you know that Bessie seems to have settled in quite nicely; she was a little restless last night but I suspect the heat was the main cause of that.

When we got home I took her on a tour of the house and then took her out for a walk and to familiarize herself with her new surroundings. When we got home she didn't seem too interested in dinner but was quite content to lay on her (new) bed and munch away on a bully stick, on occasion she would come over for cuddle. At bed time she jumped on my bed for a cuddle but when asked went down onto her bed and slept relatively peacefully all night then at 6am came back up for a cuddle this morning. I am working from home today to keep an eye on her but I think she will be fine."

Want to help homeless animals like Bessie. Support your local animal sheltering organization. You can volunteer, adopt, donate. If PHS/SPCA is your local organization we'd of course welcome your support. If you don't know your local organization, I'd be happy to figure out who is doing the good work in your community -- just send me an email or post a comment here.
