Once again, a letter best presented without further comment...

"Dear PHS President Ken White,

"I just read about your January 2003 promises to not put to sleep physically healthy, behaviorally sound dogs and cats, as well as helping to re-home the physically unhealthy and behaviorally challenged pets.

"I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your promises. I adopted a kitty who had been at your shelter for a year and a half. She was an all grey kitty, obese, who didn't always use the litter box, was sometimes feisty, and didn't get along with other kitties. It is understandable that people shied away from adopting a kitty with these issues.

"Mind you, when I came to adopt, I was not looking for a grey kitty, a big kitty, nor for a feisty kitty either, but my heart just broke when I heard that she had been at the shelter much longer than all the rest of the kitties. I knew I had to take this unwanted 'problem' kitty home with me.

"This shelter kitty came to you as a stray and was given the name 'Linda.' When I told the adoption counselor that I would adopt Linda she cried. She was so happy that Linda was finally getting a home.

"Linda was so big that your staff had to lend me a dog carrier for her ride home. On our way home, I renamed Linda, christening her as 'Sunshine,' because I was so happy to have her in my life.

"Sunshine turned out to be a wonderful partner. I love her dearly and she knows it. She sleeps on my bed, and sits on my lap; she loves to be combed and petted; she makes sure that I get up for work on time; and she always uses the litter box. She can still be feisty once in a while, but she allows me to kiss her. She's still a fairly big girl, but her weight has shifted and she now has no problem jumping on the bed or couch. She and I are a team and we are family and there is nothing better than that.

"I owe Sunshine's and my happiness to you, your staff, and your dedicated volunteers! Thank you for caring for this precious baby for a whole year and a half!

"Gratefully,

"Denise Gregory"

[Note to reader: PHS/SPCA made this promise to the community back in 2003, a commitment we have and will always keep! The Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA guarantees a home for every physically and behaviorally healthy dog and cat. In addition to the animals who come to the shelter healthy, every month PHS/SPCA makes well and finds home for 200+ animals who arrive ill, injured, behaviorally challenged, or too young to survive without maternal care. Last year, the organization saved the lives of 6,449 animals.]
