David Koch Booed at NY Christmas Ballet Performance

Posted: 01/05/11 10:29 AM ET

David Koch, one of the richest men in America and owner of the largest private energy company in the United States took to the stage over the Christmas holiday to receive praise for his $2.5 million sponsorship of the American Ballet Theatre's production of the Nutcracker... and a strange thing happened.

The oil tycoon was booed.

John Gapper on the Financial Times Business Blog has the story.

Gapper writes:

"... there were also boos from near where I sat in the balcony, followed by an angry debate in the row in front of me, with one of the booers declaring “he’s an evil man” and a couple next to her telling her to “shut up” and to leave the theatre. Mr Koch was venturing into the lion’s den in political terms, since Brooklyn is solidly liberal and Democrat, whereas he and his brother are right-wing libertarian and are alleged to have links to the Tea Party movement, which they deny."

"Once Mr Koch had left the stage, the booing stopped and the ballet started."

In our report last year, Koch Industries: Secretly Funding the Climate Denial Machine, Greenpeace outlined the millions of dollars that the Koch brothers have funneled into ideological and free-market activist organizations that have been fighting for more than a decade to confuse the scientific realities of climate and stall State and federal legislation to curb climate pollution.

The boos are rightfully earned.

Why do we have to be rude to people we disagree with?

What if he bought the American Ballet Theater and shut it down? Or worse drove it into the ground!

What if tea baggers made a point to be rude and shout down progressives that talked at every opportunity? What if this rudeness escalates? What if it becomes violent?

This is really no way to run a democracy! It is already escalating! Partisanship in the Senate and Congress have not been this bad since before the Civil War!

Is this what we want a war with the northeast and west coast against the center of the country?

We need to remember there is much more that unites us than separates us!

We need to remember we are Americans first progressives and conservatives second!

Shame them every time they show up in public. NEVER let them have a moment of peace. NEVER allow them to speak without calling them what they are - CRIMINALS.

Koch deserves far more then being booed- his crimes against humanity will be exposed someday.
As will the crimes of our national media for not informing us about the huge problems ahead with Anthropogenic global warming.

Very well said. Koch's actions are self serving.

This should happen at every public appearance the Koch bros. make -- especially the self-congratulatory ones.

Sponsoring a performance - is that the first positive thing Mr Koch has ever done?

You couldn’t have asked for a better snapshot of the chasm that divides today’s so-called expert classes from the mass of humanity than the snow crisis of Christmas 2010. They warn us endlessly about the warming of our planet; we struggle through knee-deep snow to visit loved ones. They host million-dollar conferences on how we’ll cope with our Mediterranean future; we sleep for days in airport lounges waiting for runways to be de-iced. They pester the authorities for more funding for global-warming research; we keep an eye on our elderly neighbours who don’t have enough cash to heat their homes. Brendan O Neill

It's CLIMATE CHANGE. Extremes in weather. Look at Australia. Years of drought and now they're flooded everywhere. The UK is a mass of white. The polar caps are melting earlier.

The believers in Global Warming predicted great water shortages for Australia in years ahead, as the climate warmed. The Australian governments accepted these predictions as credible. So instead of building dams to hold river water, they funded much more expensive desalinization plants, to provide adequate water to the public.

Now the existing dams are full, the low areas are flooded, and the desalinization plants are "mothballed" as there is alternative natural water from the rivers and dams.

Now the opposition party leader is proposing a new dam building program, to protect the public, and to store the excess water.

The existing governments, national and local, will have to explain to the public the rationale for misallocating large amounts of funds, based on less than credible climate forecasts.

This is another example of governments getting in trouble due to blind acceptance of forecasts by supporters of dangerous, man-made global warming.

Just another example of someone who is seemingly willfully ignorant of the problem. You're doing yourself a great disservice by failing to educate yourself. Bonnie is right that it's about climate CHANGE. There will be great variability in the future. You'll see floods in one area and extreme droughts in another. Hurricanes will be stronger, ice will melt, flooding will happen, sharp localized cold and heat spells will be the norm. One big snowfall or flood in one area or another does not mean we're in a cooling trend. And because Antarctica receives more snowfall, making the ice thicker in the middle, doesn't mean the planet is cooling. Virtually every prediction scientists have made have missed the mark... but not because they overestimate. Because they underestimate. Maybe you should leave the science to the big boys.

These guys hate being called out by their peers. They want to be seen as philantropists while hurting regular people and this time the folks aren't buying. Good for them.

To which he responded "Let them eat cake" or something like that. Apparently, the ungrateful masses are finally speaking out. Let him settle for praise from people who work for him. Let's hope the ghosts of Christmas visit him and buys us all a goose for dinner. Or at least that he doesn't come to frack in our neighborhoods.

most likely cheers in Texas and Oklahoma. Especially if he donated $2,500,000 to the universities. Heck he would be warmly received in 30-35 of the other states after giving $2,500,000! Maybe we taught him a lesson!
