Do 'Good' in This Small World This Holiday Season

Posted: 11/30/09 12:53 PM ET

It's that time of year when we celebrate friends and family. As I looked around my Thanksgiving table last week, I was glad to have the most important people in my life giving thanks beside me. With the pace of life today and all that is happening in the world it is so easy to lose sight of what really matters or become wrapped up in the things that divide us. That is why I started SixDegrees.org a few years ago -- to show how connected we all truly are and challenge people to champion causes that make a difference in this small world.

You've probably heard of the Six Degrees concept. Any one person (including me, Kevin Bacon) is connected to any other person through six or fewer relationships, because it's a small world. SixDegrees.org is about using this idea to accomplish something good. Through the site, you can support your favorite charities and spread the word about causes by creating charity badges. You can also check out the favorite causes of other people, including celebrities like Nicole Kidman (UNIFEM), Ashley Judd (YouthAIDS) and Jon Bon Jovi (Soul Foundation). Just remember that for every celebrity on the site -- and there are over 60 of them -- 150 real people like you have become "celebrity" fundraisers themselves. These are the celebrities we celebrate on SixDegrees.org.

Another way to connect with those we love, especially this holiday season, is with The Good Card® -- a gift card for charity. The Good Card has a stored value that can be redeemed as a donation to any of more than 1.8 million charities -- this includes your alma mater, a charity fighting a disease that's touched your family, or the homeless shelter around the corner. Good Cards can be purchased in any denomination from $10 to $250 and 100% of the card's value goes to charity. It's an ideal holiday gift, particularly after all the challenges people have faced this year. You can spread the joy of feeling good by doing good. Good Cards are available for purchase at www.sixdegrees.org.

This holiday season I am thankful for all the everyday celebrities who are out there promoting worthy causes through SixDegrees.org and I hope you will join me in paying it forward by sending a Six Degrees Good Card to all the people on your list that you love. It is sure to make them smile and feel good by doing good. If you are looking for the ultimate gift, this is it.

"..what you do for the least of these you do for Me.." Famous quote from a couple thousand years ago. Actually the Authors' birthday is coming up.

I also liked the simple concept I heard on the radio this week: "Do one good deed a day". I could post that up on my refrigerator or desk. It quick and easy and doesn't need a lot of time in this fast paced world. Will make a world of difference.

My small city newspaper just published a Wish List from the large number of social help groups in and around our city. The needs run from washing power and toothpaste to used computers and manila folders along with men's jeans and children's toys and books.

Sometimes, even members of our own families are hurting and need help, but are too proud to ask for it.

We are all within 6 degrees of separation whether we realize it or not, and whether we want to acknowledge it or not.

I was thinking about six degrees of separation today at the beach (before reading this) - I actually thought it was the five degrees at first, but then remembered that it was six.

Because of the increasing population of the world, will it have to become more than six?

Not sure, but I think this sounds like a good cause.

Hey Kevin...interesting observations. You come from an influential family in case ppl don't know. Your Dad was an outstanding architect/planner in Philadelphia.

also liked Murder in the First...incredible. My favorite guilty pleasure, though, is Tremors.

Thank you, Kevin, for helping make the world a better place. Wish all those with money or influence would do the same.

Always considered him and his wife and brother cool people (and Stir of Echos was creepy and underrated!).
Good on you, Kevin. Thanks for not getting all political, but instead encouraging us to give back and remember others.

I thank Kevin Bacon for this article reminding everyone to "Do Good" and be Charitable. Articles similar to this are written every Thanksgiving & Christmas season but you seldom see them the rest of the year.
My question here is, why do we need a reminder? Some don't. There are fabulous people all over the world working for others 24/7. It is their passion. However the greater majority only feel moved to be charitable during the holiday season when someone reminds them. They may be compassionate people but their generosity overflows when reminded. We all need to turn compassion into passion. This way we are always of the consciousness to be generous, loving and giving. With the state of the world and the economy of the US in the tank the only way we will survive as humanity is to help each other. We may have open minds & hearts but unless we open the door & windows of our being to help those less fortunate, the six degrees of separation will be 6 to the tenth power.

I loved this article, Mr. Bacon. You are really a great actor, btw and your wife is adorable. I am a big believer in charitiable causes, and use the cause tool bar on my net browser, daily. There are many good causes promoting there organizations, and it would be great to see Sixdegrees.org connected and promoting these charities too on Facebook. I actually just looked for it, I just don't see it or a fan page? I think it would be a huge sucess if it was utilizing the network tools available, and I would be one of the first to send out at least 500 invites to my friends and family to help promote these great causes.
