The Lowdown On Last Night's American Idol

Posted: 05/13/09 01:30 PM ET

We are down to three ladies and gentlemen! It's a fight to the finish.

Danny kicked off the night soulfully scatting with Paula's pick of song choice, Terrence Trent D'Arby's "Dance Little Sister." Kara and Simon didn't like his moves but Paula approved of the choreography. Wasn't a great review from the panel.

Then Kara and Randy gave Kris the killer One Republic smash "Apologize" to deliver. Simon and Kara went at it like cats and dogs over the song choice so Kris didn't really get a thorough critique.

Bono himself gave major props to Adam by allowing Simon to choose the U2 hit "One" for Adam to rock out to. As usual, Adam killed it, no surprise. Adam is brilliant. Simon predicted him going to the finals.

Danny stepped up and serenaded the ladies with Joe Cocker's "You Are So Beautiful." The fab four raved over Danny's second performance and loved the stellar vocals.

Kris continued the night with an acoustic version of Kanye West's "Heartless," and in the judges eyes it was a major improvement from his first song choice. Simon now can't decide whether we will see Danny or Kris joining Adam on the big night.

Adam pleased all his die-hard fans with a genius rendition of an Aerosmith classic, "Cryin'". Killed it. All four of the judges sent him straight to the big finale.

I think we are all going to be disappointed when the next artist leaves the stage, but it will determine what we've all been waiting for....who are the final two competing for the winning title of the biggest show in America!

Who cares about this silly show? A much better musical event happened Wednesday night on Leno and last night on the Colbert Report. Yusaf Islam sang a wonderful new song. It is great to hear this man's voice again. He has his own definite sound and, unlike most American Idol contestants, it is not interchangeable with a host of other singers.

As far as I know, no one needs permission to record another artist's cover tune nor perform it live so Simon asking Bono for permission for Adam to sing that song was just grandstanding. Still, Adam was a knock-out. he doesn't need that sort of bias from Simon. The only time anyone should get permission is when someone's song is used for political purposes as McCain did during the campaign and didn't even ask. The only reason they stopped using the song was because the originall artist or writer objected and it was embarrassing.

Last nights show was marred by too much judges, not enough of the contestants, and major issue with sound mix during Adam's performance. My pick for the losers this week --- the judges, sound engineer and the view public. Kris' Heartless was great because it was a brilliant song choice and great arrangement/conversion. Danny should go home now. And at least we will get studio recordings of Adam's full songs vs. the

For me it's not a matter of dislike so much as who's more annoying. Paula just doesn't come across as too bright and Simon we all know can be a smarta*s. If he would give a straight critique he'd be ok because I agree with him most of the time. Paula though wants to be liked or she's fearful of coming off as less than nice and in doing so comes off as a bit of a birdbrain. I like Randy though more and more. I saw him on The View the other day and he's a very nice man. Kara? She tries a bit much to appear like an expert. Back to Simon though. he's got a knack for making everyone talk about him and that's the bottom line; it's show biz.
