We all start off the new year with the best of intentions. Fresh start, wipe the slate clean. This is the year! You're going to lose the extra weight, get out of debt, get that promotion, and quit smoking.

But that's Jan. 1. What happens by Jan. 20, when the New Year's glow has passed and you're back in your normal routine? Your resolutions are long gone, that's what happens.

Here are four steps to making resolutions you will definitely keep:

1. Write it down. A resolution is only as good as the paper it's written on. Post it somewhere you will see it every day, like on your desk (my spot of choice) or your fridge (this could be especially helpful if your resolution is to lay off the sweets).

2. Break it down. Forget "I'm going to lose 10 pounds by springtime." Focus on the journey, not the destination. If your goal is to lose weight or get in shape, break it down into smaller steps. Resolve to hit a spin class twice a week, and write it down on your calendar. Or instead of your regular Friday night happy hour, resolve to try out Friday night yoga with your girlfriends instead.

3. Make it fun. New Year's resolutions aren't supposed to be all serious! Sure, you can use the brand new year as an excuse to tackle a long-postponed task, but make sure you have fun too. One year I resolved to try out a new restaurant every month. Another year I resolved to try out at least three new sports. If you do have a more serious goal on your list, make sure you plan a reward for yourself too.

4. Have a support network! Pair up with a friend or co-worker and help keep each other on track. Check in with each other throughout the week and inspire each other to reach those goals!

Follow these simple steps and trust me, you'll be a lot more likely to keep your January promises to yourself. Get ready for a happy, healthy, productive New Year!
