Hispanics To GOP: Dont Double My Student Loans

Posted: 04/30/2012 6:31 am

For most Hispanics, education and the search for a better life is the reason they or their ancestors immigrated to the U.S. Many young Hispanics hear the mantra; we came to the U.S. so that you could go to college and be educated. Tienes que ser una persona educada. You have to be an educated person. Education is engrained in the culture. It is paramount to the Hispanic community because it is tied to the aspirational promise of the United States. Nearly 89 percent of young Hispanics say a college education is an important component of achieving success in their life.

Sadly, partly due to cost, 48 percent of this growing population says that they do not plan to get a college degree. Getting the fastest growing segment of our countries population invested in attending college should be of the utmost importance for all elected officials. However, there is a segment of Congress ready to allow the interest rates of subsidized college loans to double. This increase will affect over 7 million students as soon as July of this year. The proposed interest rate increase for student loans would be especially devastating for Hispanic students.

Students who receive federally subsidized loans on average have $25,000 debt at graduation. If Congress allows student loan rates to double, 986,494 Hispanic students would be affected. Hispanic student enrollment is on the rise , according to a Pew Hispanic Center analysis of Census data college-age Hispanics accounted for 1.8 million, or 15 percent, of the 12.2 million enrollment of young adults in two - or four-year colleges. Hispanics have managed to make great strides in their number and share of young students in colleges and universities. Doubling the interest rates on federally subsidized college loans could reverse this trend.

For those in Congress who would rather play politics with people's educational future, the math does not add up. Saving a few dollars up front but keeping low income students from getting an education does not pay long term dividends. On Friday, House Republicans unveiled their solution by passing legislation which would stop interest rates on federal student loans from doubling by cutting $6 billion dollars from a health-care-reform law fund for breast and cervical cancer screenings, child immunizations, and prenatal tests for birth defects. This poison pill is all but certain to die in the Senate where Democrats had crafted legislation which would pay for the extension by closing tax loop holes for lawyers, architects, and other professionals in small firms.

Nickel and diming our future leaders, is a terrible strategy for the prosperity of our country. Arizona, with a large Hispanic population, is a microcosm of the country and shows how the stifling effects of this rate change on Hispanics' educational opportunities could affect the nation as a whole. A recent report by the Morrison Institute for Public Policy notes that the Hispanic education gap puts Arizona at risk. Their executive director, Susan Clark-Johnson, stated "Latinos eventually will comprise a majority of Arizonans and provide an increasingly larger share of the state's leaders, workers and tax base, If we do not close the educational gap, all of Arizona will suffer the consequences. " The reality is if we do not close the education gap the country will suffer. Letting the college student loans increase will only exacerbate this problem not fix it.

The Obama Administration in pushing to keep costs down, are speaking to a huge problem facing the country; student loan debt actually exceeded credit card debt last year, creating the prospect of mass default. Fleecing our young peoples' opportunities to achieve a quality education is short term political thinking at its worst. Politicians on both sides of the aisle see education as a bedrock institution for American society. In a fragile economy can we really put that level of financial strain on our future leaders? Currently, 23 percent of children under 17 are Hispanic, educating this growing segment of the population and helping them to become productive members of our economy should be a central concern to all of our elected officials. Hispanics distinguish themselves every day with their strong work ethic, their leadership and their productivity. They have shown, they are ready to continue to grow, the question is will Congressional Republican's help them?

Asking the Republican politicians to help out with a cause that would cut the profits of the Banking system is like asking the Taliban to embrace Christianity!

It is hard to have pity for Hispanics who can't afford college and want a break because everyone else does too. Costs of college or even trade school these days put higher education out of reach for many Americans not just Hispanics.
The dropout rate is what is high among Latinos, which means they probably won't be attending college or even trade schools. They may have a strong work ethic but not so much for education or obeying laws.
A true "DREAM Act" would reduce the interest for Americans citizen's (not foreign nationals) college loans to 1% or 2% simple interest and spur a boom in college attendance like we haven't seen since the 1960's and help our economy grow.
But it shouldn't be a prize for foreigners who violated our laws. The "DREAM Act" as it stands benefits no citizen or legal foreigner. Why should we be asked to pay for it? That is why it fails every time it is brought before either chamber of Congress.
Higher education costs are not just a "Hispanic Problem". It affects all Americans. Lower the rates for citizens, and then doing the same for foreigners might be open for discussion.

They are happy to NOT double our student loans as long as we pay for it in our healthcare!

The hike in interest rates on student loans calls for the money to be used to fund ObamaCare. Someone has to pay for the free heatlh care, according to the health care law. This is just the start of new taxes and fees to fund Obama care.

Should not the Title to this Article be:

Hispanics To GOP: Dont Double "the interest rates of" My Student Loans

Let me restate your argument. Everyone else SHOULD pay twice what they pay now EXCEPT for hispanics based solely on race. I guess that parallels the whole - everyone else should follow immigration laws except hispanics too policy. At least you're consistent.

Even more sadly, Hispanics aren't graduating from high school, or are "graduating" with no conceivable path to success in college. Here's what the LA school system, the second largest in the US, is planning to do to deal with the problem in a district that is 70% Hispanic: drastically lower "graduation" requirements.

Yes, "hispanics" do what they tell you to do. And when you're tired of someone prescribing what you should stand up for as a made-up collective (hispanic/latino), you'll realize that you are an individual human being with your own thoughts on what is important to you.

Yes but why should these folks stay in their own country where they would be expected to pay for their own education when they could just come here, take out a fortune in student loans---and then re-neg on paying them. You see...free education. This is what liberals call a win-win situation.

The Republicans do not want Hispanics to grow. They want to keep them as a poor underclass that can be used for low-paying, menial jobs.

Suffices to look at Rubio's proposed Dream Act, which would not even grant green cards immediately to grown-ups who have lived here since they were two. Rubio thinks that they only deserve temporary work visas, which would preclude them from certain jobs and hence prevent them from maximizing their potential.
12:45 PM on 04/30/2012
Hispanics are doing an excellent job of this on their own. Here's what the LA School District is doing to cope with overwhelming lack of achievement by their 70%+ Hispanic student population.

Here is a thought - if you cannot afford the loans, do not take out the loans.

How about WORKING your way through school?

Maybe you will not graduate in 4 years. Maybe it will take 6 or 7. So what.

Maybe you will not be able to go to the school you WANT to go to, but the one you can AFFORD to go to. So what.

You see, the Democrats plugged in the revenue from the increase in student loan rates to the spending they want. And if the rates do not go up, the money has to come from somewhere. And do you know where that somewhere is?

The taxpayers.

Why should we be paying for your college?

Exactly my thought. I am sorry but the government (or really the US taxpayer) does not owe everybody a low interest loan to attend college.

In the first place, despite what is commonly said, not everyone needs a college degree. Look at the glut of people with degrees in many fields which just leads to many of them not being able to get jobs in their chosen field and therefore having trouble repaying their loans.

Then there is the fact that not everyone is cut out for a college education. That isn't to say they should be relegated to low paying jobs. Have you had to pay for a plumber lately? Do you think the plumber has a college degree?

And we have people complaining because the US is shipping its manufacturing jobs overseas. Does anyone think they majority of people working in manufacturing have degrees? And many of those manufacturing jobs pay more than some college grads will ever make.

Thank you, Republicans, for saving the Colorado Taxpayers from having to subsidize $19,138 a year for each & every illegal attending the University of Colorado ~ via, the defeated SB 15 ASSET legislation that would have granted a new classification of in-state tuition at $11,012 a year at the Unniversity of Colorado

In-State Tuition at CU = $9,152 annually
Proposed Illegals at CU = $11,012 annually
Out-of-State Tuition at CU = $30,330 annually

Hispanics are only concerned about what their costs are ~ never a concern about the costs to the U.S. Taxpayer for programs benefitting them ~ their self-determined attitude of entitlement has got to be changed

it's a huge issue for all young people and if the gop plays politics with this it will be another strike against them and frankly I don't think they can win the politics as presented

Yes because many citizens want to vote themselves bread and circuses, while others pay for it. That is a losing game.
