Who Still Stands With Sheriff Joe Arpaio?

Posted: 05/14/2012 12:23 am

If someone asked if you would support a law that allowed local police officers with minimal cause, to arrest and indefinitely detain American citizens for not providing legal documentation, what would you say? In Arizona, Sheriff Joe Arpaio has been doing just this for the last three years. This election cycle Arizona voters will be able to say definitively if they will still stand for this behavior.

For those who would support such types of enforcement measures, imagine for a moment the following: you are five months pregnant pulling into your driveway after a long day at work. A Sheriff's Officer pulls up, and without citing you for anything, asks you to sit on the hood of your car. It is hot, you are tired, and you refuse. The officer pulls your arms behind your back and slams you, stomach first, into the vehicle three times. He then drags you his patrol car and holds you in custody indefinitely. You are an American citizen who has just been detained for failure to provide identification.

This actually happened. After three years of investigation and countless second chances, the Justice Department finally issued a lawsuit against Sheriff Joe Arpaio. The suit alleges that his office engaged in a pattern of unconstitutional conduct towards American citizens. This includes racial profiling, abuse in jail and blatant disregard for dispensing his sworn duties to protect and serve the people of Arizona.

Sheriff Joe executes the duties of his office based on his own twisted view of the law and an unquenchable thirst for publicity. In that regard he is more like a despot in a third world country than a democratically elected official in the United States. Outside of this lawsuit he has been accused of misusing federal funds, disregarding human rights in his "tent cities," chasing publicity by waging an investigation into the Presidents birth certificate all while failing to investigate over 400 sex crimes

His excuse for this flamboyant behavior has been his passion for enforcing the law. This zeal has mostly been limited to terrorizing low skilled laborers who may or may not be in the country legally. What the voters of Maricopa County did not know, and the DOJ suit makes very clear, is that in the process of "enforcing the law" his office trampled the rights of countless American citizens. In an election year the real question is, who in Arizona would re-elect a politician with so much political baggage hanging over his head?

To be sure the list of Sheriff Joe's supporters in Arizona politics grows shorter by the day. Russell Pearce the only state Senator in the history of Arizona to ever be recalled is gone. Sheriff Paul Babeu, Arpaio's chief disciple among law enforcement officials is embroiled in a scandal that has crushed his Congressional aspirations, Sheriff Joe's lawyer Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas was recently disbarred in a federal abuse of power investigation. At this point Sheriff Joe stands nearly alone.

While many Maricopa County voters say Sheriff Joe is only doing his job, the contents of the DOJ lawsuit say otherwise. Another American citizen was followed to her home, and cited for having a "non-functioning license plate light." This infraction found her face down on the ground with a knee in her back and handcuffs around her wrist. Who in their right mind can defend such actions, let alone in good conscience continue to vote for an elected official who allows the abuse of pregnant women?

There is a strand in Arizona's political DNA which is fiercely independent, that looks at the federal government with healthy skepticism. That is fine. Sheriff Joe is skilled at playing to that impulse which needs to challenge the Government. No one is arguing that Sheriff Arpaio is not a shrewd politician. The voters in Arizona are good hard working people, they deserve answers. Sheriff Joe must answer for the abuse of a pregnant American citizen and countless others. Arizona voters have one question to ask themselves, what more can Sheriff Arpaio do before they stand up and make a change?

Lets pose a little situation here.

Suppose that (your name here) and an illegal both apply for the same job. The illegal gets the job while (your name here) does not even though both are fully capable of doing the job. How would that make you feel?

To the person who wrote the article:

Criminals have no rights IMHO. They broke the law and are now in prison so they should have their rights taken from them until they get out of prison.

Sheriff Joe takes a tough stance on crime and believes in making the criminals pay for their crimes which is the position that EVERY sheriff in america should take, but sadly most do not so for most criminals prison is like a vacation.

I challenge you to do a year long study on sheriff Joe's prisons and the prisons of one other sheriff in a county similar in population size as Maricopa county in the country. See which prisons have most of the same people coming back in that year. My guess is that Sheriff Joe's prisons will not have near as many repeat offenders due to how he runs the prisons.

I stand with the good sheriff. He and his team have been able to uncover obama's being a fraud! What the hell is wrong with wanting a secure and safe environment to live work and play in? If you are not here legally then you need to get back to where you should be. If you don't like the conditions back home organize a revolution if that's what it might take. We have enough problems here to deal with without this being an issue. Illegal is Illegal. Case closed. I am with the good Sheriff 101%.

There should not be one living legal resident of America that should have a problem with this man. Not one! The press as it has evolved is strongly leaning left. It is corrupt. It appears that Congress and the US Supreme Court is corrupt, as well. obama is an imposter. This is becoming common knowledge across the country. He is quickly bankrupting the US. The bottom line is, "Sheriff Joe, we love you! Please do not give this up. You have the support of many!" God Bless America!

"Who Still Stands With Sheriff Joe Arpaio?"

The people of Arizona who keep voting in back in with HUGE margins.

The American people who want our immigration laws to FINALLY be enforced.
11:02 AM on 05/16/2012
I stand with Joe. I am an AMERICAN.
11:53 AM on 05/20/2012
Surely you jest? An American who would allow our very system to be hijacked? Who ae you foolin'? Rather, who are you letting fool you? Mark my words Arpaio is making huge money in all of this! I t would not surprise me if he is getting payed by the coyotes to let Mexicans in then pretend he is against them. Ha! It is sure as heck something like that! : )
02:07 PM on 06/07/2012
Have you been hiding under a rock all your life?

The US government has done the very hijacking of our system that you accuse Sheriff Joe of which is why Sheriff Joe is being made to be the bad guy.
12:01 PM on 05/20/2012
American? Surely you jest? Folks are being fooled into beleiving that dismantling our democracy is somehow good for us. You would support that? Mr. Arpaio will be caught one day at whatever it is that he is doing to make obviously huge money...he is not playing this game for his bully satisfaction entirely. He is making big money somehow and must keep up the cover to avoid being caught. My bet? He is getting payed by the coyotes to allow these people safe passage then covering by harrassing the AZ mexican American population and making the big bull sounds. Mark my words.

The illegal Mexican lobby in AZ has been screaming racism against Sheriff Joe for a decade now without any proof what so ever... It is the frivilous lawsuits against Joe that are costing the taxpayer.. Obama is just trying to strong arm the Sheriff into dropping the forjury investigation.

Well it looks like the illegals were right all along. The Justice Department is on the move and the sheriff is in deep do do.
12:43 AM on 05/15/2012
Did you notice the la raz and lulac and the other screaming lefftist mexican lobbyist didn't go marching down our Phoenix streets carrying che flags and banners saying ' give our rights'? I guess someone told the illegals they are not covered in all of our constitutional rights. May 1st and 5th were nice and quiet here. The thought of Sheriff joe actually arresting the criminal illegals marching by the thousands in his legal domain and getting fingerprinted checked for illegal status and placed in the extremely uncomfortable, yet legal tents and pink underwear might have been a bit of a deterent. Ya think?
11:33 PM on 06/07/2012
Yup they kept they traps shut because they knew they would be deported to mexico if they opened they mouths.

If the US government would just enforce the immigration laws already on the books then Sheriff Joe wouldn't have as many illegals to deal with nor would any other sheriff in America.

Unfortunately a lot of Americans still support sheriff Joe. Americans are often ignorant of the facts or just plain ignore them because they want to hate or blame someone for the problems our country faces. Arpaio feeds hate, I wish people could be more tolerant but I am losing hope that things will change. The more our economy is squeezed the more likely it is that the poor and middle class will fight over the few crumbs thrown their way.
12:57 AM on 05/15/2012
In case you forgot the illegals are stealing those 'crumbs' from the poor and middle class. Sheriff Joe is trying to prevent that very action so the American citizens can at least get those crumbs thrown out by the obamas of the world. Maybe clooney and the other movie millonaires could add a few million to supplement the poor and middle class of this country, not some foreign lands.
08:05 PM on 06/07/2012
I agree.

The illegals get free healthcare while the poor US citizens have to do without because they cannot afford it.

Who pays for the illegals? We do with our tax dollars.

If the DOJ would do its job instead of going after Sheriff Joe simply because he is doing what the DOJ refuses to do there would be way less illegals and way less of a crime rate.
11:05 AM on 05/16/2012
Americans are often ignorant? I couldn't agree with you more. We are totally IGNORANT and STUPID for allowing the illegal aliens to get a free ride in OUR country at taxpayer expense. We need more people like Sheriff JOE. It isn't that Americans feel hate - we are just tired of giving food that OUR kids need to the illegal aliens. Enough is Enough!

YOU ARE SO RIGHT.....all we have to do is trample the rights of thousands of american citizens....I've got an idea!!!....why don't we start with you!!...... I'm sure you wouldn't mind being arbitrarily arrested.....
12:07 PM on 05/20/2012
The border security has been tripled since Obama took office. Big farm and big business needs the illegals so they are given passgae by AZ. Arpiao will be caught at his money making scheme whatever it may be. Obviously his bellering is covering up something. The louder they are, the more they are hiding or making up. Listen to them sometime.

Entirely pointless comment.

All the woman had to do was show her id like she was asked to and she would not have been on the ground.

If a police officer tells you to do something you do it unless you know for a fact that what the police officer asks you to do is illegal.

Its obvious that Arpaio is above and beyond Miranda vs. Arizona (1966) decided by one of my favorite, and one of the most respectable Republicans, Earl Warren.

One would think that these guys need to know a little law before being voted in by their communities to enforce the law.

Only in the minds of napolitano, holder and obama has our elected sheriff broken any laws. nappolitano tried every day while she was the AZ governor to 'get Joe' and she failed and failed and failed, just as she will again.

It is the trash talking that does it for them. They love to hear anyone bad mouth the democrats and especially that black dude in the Oval office. They can't stand the thought of President Obama running the nation. It makes everything their parents told them a lie.
08:14 PM on 06/07/2012
I have a question. When an inquiry was made as to where President Obama was born why did that country in Africa close its books. Also his grandmother said she remembered where he was born (not in the US) and shortly after she got sick and died. Sounds fishy to me.

Also President Obama is a Muslim. A missionary to Africa who visited the church I go to told us that an African soldier told her that Obama is indeed a Muslim.

Y'all people need to wake up. The Muslims have succeeded in getting one of their own into the top government position in America. Does that not alarm you?

"Racial profiling"? Law enforcement agencies all across the US do it every day!!!! Descriptions of suspects or wanted individuals use words like "white - black - hispanic - asian" when sent out to agents.

How about a geeric description such as "male, 25 to 30, brown and black (eyes and hair color), 6 feet, 190 pounds, wearing jeans and t-shirt" - how many men would be stopped and questioned and how much time wasted without further description?

Want to sue someone for "racial profiling"? Then sue each and every law enforcement agency from the FBI on down to your local police department when they use words like "white - black - hispanic - asian" in their descriptions.

you are mixing racial descriptions and racial profiling

Racial profiling is when I get stopped (and investigated)  for blocking the intersection..because I happen to drive a fancy luxury car in a "affluent" neighborhood ..while the cops  ignore the car ahead of me (driven by a white person) who  abruptly stopped (in that intersection) thereby creating the problem

Racial profiling is when a person is mugged by an assailant (of hispanic, italian or black descent...victim unsure of identity) and the young african-american business executive (who happens to be wearing a business suit) is questioned and ask to provide evidence that he is not the mugger

Blocking the intersection is a driving infraction, you could be given a ticket for that.

Now let's say you don't speak any English, or don't have a drivers license or expired tags, then the cop can question your immigration status.

Actually a cop needs NO probable cause to question immigration status, see Muehler vs Mena, a SCOTUS ruling which was UNANIMOUS saying cops can question your status without probable cause. This is why SB 1070 is going to hold up.

Going after people, based on their race, is racial profiling. Describing a subject in physical terms is not. Think before you post drivel.

Has the DOJ released a complete investigation?

Did the victims of the police brutality file charges against the law enforcement officers responsible?
If so, these two complaints should be part of the DOJ investigation.

Does Phoenix have a police department?
01:24 AM on 05/15/2012
The justice department sent a letter before the end of last year that was over 120 pages long. It detailed problems going back a number of years. I don't think that they released all the results of an investigation as I don't think that's done until they actually go to court. There is both a civil and criminal investigation and the letter dealt with the civil matters. I saw an estimate recently that suggested that there are 144 million dollars in law suits pending. They range from improper arrests to those involving a nunber of suspicious deaths including videos that show individuals on the ground being tasered to death. Joe also investigated and attempted to indict county officials who were responsible for his budget and judges with whom he disagreed without probable cause to do so. These matters are reported in the proceedings regarding the disbarment of former Maricopa county attorney Andrew Thomas and Lisa Aubuchon. There is a police department in Phoenix and I understand that in the last few years murders have decreased in Phoenix but increased in the unincorporated parts of the county that Joe patrols. Women and children are also at risk here as Joe has failed to investigate over 430 cases of sexual abuse and it is suggested that others under his watch were inadequately investigated. Maricopa county is also responsible for the schools and it seems here anymore that we don't build many schools but we do build a lot of prisons.
