Angie's List Has a Problem with Women

Posted: 05/17/2012 10:14 am

Angie's List recently made news and not in a good way. The popular business referral service has apparently decided to risk the reputation of their own business by supporting Rush Limbaugh's hate radio. I can only presume that they are hoping to take advantage of Limbaugh's last distress-sale advertising rates in order to create buzz following their recent Initial Public Offering. In doing so, they have traded dollars and cents for any sense of common decency. Their ad dollars are supporting a man who has called women sluts, prostitutes and lard-asses. While Angie's decision to associate with Rush Limbaugh is revealing in and of itself, a closer inspection of the company reveals that their association with Rush should not be all that surprising. Angie's List, it seems, has a problem with women too.

Angie's List was co-founded by Angie (Angela Bowman Hicks) and William Oesterle in 1995. The two came together in order to create a reliable source of business referrals and Angie's List was born. Though Angie is the public face of the eponymous organization, Bill Oesterle is actually the CEO. Oesterle's career did not start in business however. It started in Republican politics. (Hat tip to @catsrimportant!)

After graduating from Purdue University, Oesterle took a low-level position with Republican Governor Robert Orr of Indiana. Oesterle apparently rose through the ranks quickly and in 1988 moved from Governor Orr's staff to the conservative Hudson Institute where he served as Director of Corporate Affairs.

The Hudson Institute's website describes the organization as "a nonpartisan policy research organization dedicated to innovative research and analysis that promotes global security, prosperity, and freedom." Nonpartisan...right!

Some of the Hudson Institute's recent work includes providing research for the Heartland Institute's climate change denial crusade and publishing helpful articles like: "The Prospects for Defunding Obamacare: It's Hard to Starve the Beast." For some additional flavor of the Hudson Institute, here's a fun clip of the current Hudson Institute President Emeritus, Herbert London, defending Rush Limbaugh (he apologized after all!) and denouncing students who protested after a professor echoed Limbaugh's comments calling Sandra Fluke a "prostitute" and "extortionist." Mr. London called the actions of the students "inappropriate." What the professor said on the other hand, Mr. London viewed simply as "free speech." Nonpartisan... check!

After an exciting tenure in the Hudson Institute right-wing corporate propaganda shop, Oesterle moved into the corporate world but he never fully left the Republican political fray. In 2004, Oesterle managed Mitch Daniels' successful Indiana gubernatorial race. Daniels as you'll recall was considered a possible Republican presidential candidate and is now on Mitt Romney's possible VP list. Oesterle's political giving has also been prolific. Over the past 10 years, he has given more than $300,000 to Republican politicians in his home state of Indiana. Not a single dollar has gone to Democrats. Given his obvious partisan affiliations, it makes sense that Oesterle would be sympathetic to Limbaugh's "entertaining" right-wing messages, and his method actor's delivery of distortion, lies, and incendiary vitriol.

So we understand Oesterle's motivation in supporting Limbaugh, but what about the rest of Angie's executive team? Well, the senior team at Angie's List also provides some insight into why they may not be sensitive to the concerns of women. Angie's List is obviously named after a woman and in fact seems to be marketed extensively to women. Angie herself is featured prominently in all the company's promotional materials. The only images on the front page of their website are one of Angie and a thumbnail from a video featuring a female customer. A page on their site dedicated to consumer praise is dominated by women commenters and includes quotes like this one:

I've heard horror stories about women being taken advantage of on price and service, and I didn't want this to happen to me. So I talked to a friend, and she directed me to Angie's List.
Given the company's emphasis on women, I was pretty surprised to find that there is not even one woman on the Angie's List board of directors. Senior management is little better, with Angie herself being the sole female representative who made the cut. Couple the lack of female voices at senior levels within Angie's List's management with their current support of the practicing misogynist Rush Limbaugh, and Angie's stance becomes pretty clear: their actual support of women goes as far as taking their money. Rush Limbaugh, like any citizen, has the right to say whatever he wants. And businesses are free to place ads as they see fit, and where they see fit. But millions of people who find Rush's misogyny and hate speech offensive also have a right to make their values known through how they spend their money, and whom they spend it with. By choosing to place their ad dollars with Rush Limbaugh, Angie's List is supporting Limbaugh's regular spew of offensive, vulgar and divisive rhetoric about women, minorities, and just about anyone else that he or his tightly-coupled Republican party war machine have in their gunsights at any given time.

When asked about becoming the public face for Angie's List, Hicks Bowman said: "I love what we do for consumers. I love being an advocate for the right, fair way to do things." I hope that William Oesterle, Angela Bowman Hicks and the rest of the Angie's List executive team will take Angie's words into consideration and end their support for hate media. Until they do, I hope that you will withhold your support from Angie's List, spread the word, and politely voice your concerns directly to Angie's List via Facebook, Twitter and by calling them directly at 888-888-5478. I was very interested to hear about Bill Oesterle's background. It explains a lot.

How small. Libs always trying to silence the opposition. It will never work. Even if you were able to get rid of Rush (in your dreams) I enjoy many other talk show hosts.

Angie's list isn't all it purports to be. They're facing a major federal court action in Louisiana for failing to implement their own review and certification process by allowing a competitor of a child psychiatrist to post defamatory things without any questions asked over a three year period. Their supposedly strict policy that mandates self identification of competitors who review their peers is an obvious sham. Too busy playing politics I guess.

I just got another email wanting me to subscribe to Angie's List. I am so glad to see this information..NO WAY ON EARTH will I ever spend another dime with these people. This is the type of information I think I need, not if some "starlets" bikini accidently slipped. And it was shuffled to the back so fast it's a miracle I even saw this article. But I am thankful I did.

Apparently you don't know how business works, and if anything, your fake war on Rush, has actually made you look bad. Get a life and move on, particularly since Angie's List can sue you for implying that because they advertise some place, it's against women. I am going to call them and tell them if they drop Rush, then I will deal with them. I don't like bully's on either side of the aisle.

They got two calls then..I just called them to tell them WHY they will NEVER get another penny from me. I don't like to be lied to. Makes me feel as stupid as they laugh about over lunch to fall for this kind of thing..And finding out who is really behind Angie's list after we had been led to believe was a real woman with real problems is all a lie..NO...I am very grateful to find out who is really behind it and my money will never go to republicans that is trying their best to destroy this country if I can help it. We are not all as clueless as they spend so much money trying to convince us we are.

I am always perplexed when members of any marginalized class defend those who are the perpetrators of their marginzalization. The very idea that a black woman would defend Rush Limbaugh is entirely bewildering. It is a testament to the freedoms dearly won in the Civil Rights movement, that progress in equality and freedom is enjoyed by so many whose ancestors were under the heel of white supremacy for so long. We have seen many rise to the ranks of the powerful and adopt the very demeaning attitudes toward others that held them down for so many many centuries - to wit Clarence Thomas' misogyny, Allen West's political demagoguery, etc. There is one reason I can think of as to why someone formerly oppressed would join the ranks of the oppressors. The fear of losing that freedom may drive them to take action to deny it for others. Chris Mooney's The Republican Brain, helps to explain a lot. There is a scientific basis for what seems to be an entirely counter-intuitive action.

You are truly offensive by criticizing a thoughtful woman with your profiling. But you represent your party very well. Obama and the dems are the most devisive people ever. Every matter always ends up being portrayed as a racial issue. You need a psychiatrist.
09:53 AM on 05/25/2012
You know the conservatives cannot stand any references to the "Republican Brain." Drives them even more crazy then they already are, ie (see azinv). I too am always surprised when someone from a group who has been historically marginalized chooses to join the side of the bullies. It reminds me of "mean girls" in high school. Where the pathetic downtrodden wannabe turns on others in an effort to establish her place with the powerful popular ones. In other words, if you can't beat them legitimately, then join them, even if it means checking your humanity at the front door. Makes one wonder what happens to the wannabe when the powerful popular ones she is trying to emulate are no more. Guess we'll have to wait for the sequel to find out.

I guess Obama is an enemy of women for giving the ok to the Maher million dollar donation!

It should be noted and was omitted from this article that Rush Limbaugh actually reads the Angie's List ad himself so his association with Angie's List is very different than most other advertisers on his program. RJ Crane, editor topplebush.com

We are embarking on some major home projects and I was just about to rejoin Angie's List after being absent for a couple of years. Guess I won't.

Thank you for getting this out there, Krystal. I do think Angie's List's decision has re-energized segments of our #stoprush cause, though. It was fantastic to see the hundreds and hundreds of negative comments on their FB and twitter.

Alas, their sponsorship is disappointing, yet not surprising, given the CEO's past. Onward we go.

Angie's List also advertises on The Randi Rhodes Show, who is a progressive host. Remember that by boycotting Angie's List you may also be impacting some progressive hosts.
08:02 PM on 05/17/2012
Yeah thats true burt having read this piece I think that Randi needs to reevaluate her relationship with these people. I to thought they were a more enlightened and liberal group and I imagined there were many woman involved with running this business. Now we know the truth. I choose to do the right thing. Randi may have to lose an advertizer by doing the right thing i.e not accept money from supporters of hate radio. Tough call but doing the right thing is not easey... Ask Obama.

I don't see how boycotting their advertising on Limbaugh's show impacts another program.

The way Randi Rhodes explained it, all of the radio hosts who share common sponsors are affected by boycotts. If Angie's List loses business because of Rush and buys less ad time, it could also how much time they buy on her show because she and Rush work for the same company.

So we've come to the point that we can only support companies that have the same politics as we do. I suppose if Angie's list bought advertising on Ed Schultz's radio show it would be ok to support them. God knows Ed has never said anything offensive he's had to apologize for. Tell me Krystal Ball, can I still use Craig's List - is Craig a Democrat? Are there women on his board? I suppose I'll have to stop using Facebook too. I've never seen a woman mentioned prominently in that company. And Mark Zuckerberg's got to be a Republican with all that wealth. I find it hard to believe, comrade, that a "journalist" like you would promote such political repression - wait, no I don't.

But she's not arguing that the Angie's list service is poor, she's arguing that people should boycott the company only because of their political beliefs - which don't happen to agree with hers. There's nothing "free market" about that. It sounds very much like what the USSR used to do political dissidents: believe what we believe or we'll destroy you. I challenge you to find me a similar article written by a conservative that calls for a boycott on some company simply for its left-leaning political beliefs.
10:14 AM on 05/25/2012
For me, it's really quite simple. Limbaugh has singlehandedly done more to inflame hatred and antagonism between the parties in this country than any other single person I know. And the country is now suffering for it. Any company that would choose to advertise on Limbaugh's show is complicit in the hatred and division that he continues to spew. In other words, it's not Angie's List itself, it's the fact that Angie's List is choosing to advertise with Limbaugh, which is the deciding factor for me. Choosing to advertise with Limbaugh is a blatant red flag about that company's attitude towards women and it's willingness to disregard and miminize the divisiveness that Limbaugh is recklessly using as a means to line his own pockets. There is an exception to the constitutional guarantee of freedom of speech in this country, and that is hate speech. Limbaugh crosses that line every day of the week.

Thanks for the nice opinion piece Krystal. I visited your cute stoprush.net website and something popped out that you fail to mention when touting how successful (or unsuccessful based on the number of visitors you actually get to your site) stoprush.net really is. On your own site, there are currently 875 active Rush sponsors, 222 inactive, and 177 avoiding. Until the number of inactive and avoiding advertisers surpass the number of active advertisers, there will be no stopping Rush, and you know this to be a fact.

***Insert sarcasm here*** "I'm sure this blog piece will do wonders to getting Angie's List to stop advertising on the Rush Limbaugh Show."
