Boycott Rush

Posted: 03/ 2/2012 10:00 am

Last week, the House of Representatives held a hearing on access to contraception that included no women. Chairman Daryl Issa denied a Georgetown law student, Sandra Fluke, permission to speak on the absurd grounds that the hearing was about religious freedom, not birth control. After Democrats held their own hearing in which Fluke gave passionate, thoughtful testimony about a friend who lost an ovary because she couldn't afford the birth control pills that would have reduced her ovarian cysts, Rush Limbaugh apparently felt the need to weigh in and decided to do so in the shameful, loathsome way that only Rush could. As I could never improve upon the words themselves for a distillation of the soul of Rush Limbaugh, here they are:

"What does that make her (Fluke)? It makes her a slut, right? It makes her a prostitute," he said. "She wants to be paid to have sex. She's having so much sex she can't afford the contraception." As if that wasn't enough, he had to insult the most powerful woman in the legislative branch and Sandra's parents:

"Can you imagine if you're her parents how proud of Sandra Fluke you would be?" he said. "Your daughter goes up to a congressional hearing conducted by the Botox-filled Nancy Pelosi and testifies she's having so much sex she can't afford her own birth control pills and she agrees that Obama should provide them, or the Pope."

Not satisfied with simple slander and name-calling, Limbaugh then doubled down on his attacks on Fluke and actually demanded that she post sex tapes online: "So Miss Fluke, and the rest of you Feminazis, here's the deal. If we are going to pay for your contraceptives, and thus pay for you to have sex. We want something for it. We want you post the videos online so we can all watch."

So, here we are. If you are a woman who stands up for your rights, you are a slut and your parents should be ashamed of you and we should all have the right to view your sex tapes online. This type of despicable behavior is part and parcel of a time-worn tradition of Slut-Shaming. When women step out line, they are demeaned and degraded into silence. If you say Herman Cain sexually harassed you, you are a slut. If you say Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas sexually harassed you, you are a slut. If you are Congresswoman Janice Hahn running for election and you reach out to gang members in the community, you are a pole dancer getting your panties stuffed with $100 bills (no disrespect to pole dancers here, with a name like Krystal Ball I get likened to one all the time). In fact, I had my own interaction with Slut-Shaming during my 2010 campaign for Congress. I wrote about this experience in the Huffington Post in an article entitled The Next Glass Ceiling. Suffice it to say, GOP bloggers released goofy party photos of me from my early twenties with my then-husband. I suppose the implication was that I might have actually had sex with my husband, so clearly I was a slut.

Having sex doesn't make you a slut and speaking out for women's health care certainly doesn't. Standing up for your rights doesn't mean someone gets to rhetorically rip your top off in hopes to send you running from the public square in shamed humiliation, a cautionary tale for any woman who dares forget her place. Sandra Fluke is a private citizen who went to a hearing and testified. Look at what happened to her. How do you think this makes young women feel about the possibility of actually running for office?

My generation has taken for granted that we have control over our bodies. We have taken choice, access to birth control and respect for our intellect for granted in modern society. We thought we could have it all, be sexy if we wanted to be, intellectual when we wanted to be and respected consistently for who we are. Limbaugh's disgraceful words and tactics remind us that we can't take any of those things for granted. It's time to wake up. It's time to fight back. It's time to call these sexist, disgusting, bullying people out. Sandra Fluke is not alone. She's every mother, wife, sister and daughter who has ever tried to make a difference in civil society and been demeaned in order to terrorize her, shame her, silence her and punish her. No more. Never again.

Yesterday I watched Sandra Fluke defending herself on the Ed Show. She was graceful, thoughtful, sincere and brave. She is too kind, measured and dignified to raise her voice in the blistering, full-throated rage that should come from the way she's been treated. So it is up to us, the sisters, daughters, wives, mothers and the husbands, brothers and sons who love us, to voice that rage and make this the last time that ripping apart a young woman or any woman in a public shaming serves a political purpose and makes for good ratings. We will not allow this despicable behavior to stand.

Saul Alinsky said that no politician can afford to stand on an issue if you make it hot enough. Limbaugh is even more susceptible to public pressure than a politician. We don't have to wait until Election Day. We can take away the advertisers that give Limbaugh his platform right now. Already his sponsors are feeling the heat and some have decided to pull their ads. Spread the word. Stand up for women. Do not patronize any company that sponsors sexism. Boycott Rush.

Canadians have as much freedom of speech as US citizens, yet they have managed to keep trash like Rush et al. off their airwaves and out of their politics. What Rush and other talk radio hosts are doing to the political and cultural climate in the US is fast approaching the point of shouting "Fire" in a crowded theater. They are deliberately and maliciously tearing the US into warring camps for political gain. This is an abuse not a use of their right to freedom of speech.

This is for all soldiers & their families from Vietnam to present, If your able to view this .I`m sorry for your losses & injuries. I sincerely hope you get better! Tonight reflect on the Men & women ,NURSES, medical units, etc. If you follow oreilly, limbaugh, hann, beck . black, brown, red, yellow aren`t these people`s favorite color.. But these colors served with us. in our teams, squads, platoons, etc.. NOT oreilly, limbaugh, bush, reagan. But brothers like McCain & Kerry did. No matter how much "rash" talks of patriotism, & the troops. He got out of going.Even the mexicans did their part in working the fields that provided food during the monsoons, & year round. So when we all die a few people that won`t be at our services,Rash,Bill,Hannity, beck,& of course bush . You would think that some of the people do not have daughters, mothers or sisters. How could they continue to support Rush and look the women of the family in the eyes

And what about Chris Matthews, Keith Olbermann, Bill Maher, Matt Taibbi, and Ed Schultz?
Consumers who are avoiding products by Limbaugh’s advertisers are engaged, whether they know it or not, in what’s known in labor law as a secondary boycott.

Then I have to ask what about the JC Penny boycott, Home Depot boycott, and various others that if I recall correctly Rush seemed to endorse? One way or another I was a ditto head till I started asking questions after the 2000 election of baby Bush. I might be more inclined to back down if he had actually apologised instead of doing what every bully I have ever met has done, which is make excuses for his actions, he is an entertainer? Instead of actually apologising he issues a sarcastic statement.

I am not familar with any of the people you mentioned so couldn't say anything about that. However I am overseas and the Rush ran on the 10pm news as one of their leading stories on ITV in London that tells you how big this is. If it hadn't been for that I might have not know for days. Rush has been treading a fine line for years something like the this incident is what got him kicked off of broadcast TV. So think this has been a long time coming and people have just shaken their head and ignored his asinine behavior for too long.

This actually echoing the wording of the times of persecution of Pasternak: "I novel, Pasternak did not read, but the blame! .. ". You can Google Pasternak on wikipedia

No do not let this go. This is just another example of lemmings falling off the cliff. This is not a very nice man and he has always spoken with forked tongue and really needs to go. For these individuals who claim to be so religious and self righteous why don’t they practice what they preach. We are not all of the same religious belief for starters, therefore, we cannot all be right in our religious beliefs. Believe it or not, if you believe in a higher power it is the same power regardless of the way you show your religious beliefs. Let people live there own lives, if you see they need or ask for help, assist them the best you can but keep your nasty opinions to yourself. Remember, do onto other living and air breathing people as you would have them do to you.

Limbaugh AND Fluke are going overboard at each end of the spectrum. I don't see anywhere in this analysis a conclusion that comes close to that assessment. We also have constitutionally protected speech and nothing more. Thank goodness, for the U.S. Constitution! Move on, please!
11:18 AM on 03/06/2012
Apparently you don't have a daughter...he should be punched out and then maybe i would let it go, NOT!!
03:54 PM on 03/06/2012
I`ll have some of that, "gosa33" I` don`t believe in ganging up . But sometimes people with power & no true life experiences need to be taken out behind the barn & let someone else do the judging for once
01:18 PM on 03/06/2012
The constitution only works If applied equally & fairly genius. It wasn`t drafted to include women, irish, german, indians, blacks, chinese, french, spaniards, & more.
04:51 PM on 03/06/2012
this post was not meant for gosa33 but a writer talking about freedom of speech & the constitution... If I publicly call RASH & DUMB IMIS those words I would be arrested ,fined community servs., misdomeanor, maybe even a felony . I would have to get a lawyer to get me out.

This is getting funny. I had no idea that you liberals were this afraid of Rush. I knew you were scared to death of Sara. Now I have to listen to them even more to find out why you liberals are so afraid of the truth. Saw Krystal on the Ed Show. I liked the Mr Ed horse show better. At least the horse had some class and a real viewing audience. Krystal if you really want to get hear, go on the Fox channel. Good show, just no one saw it.. And, I think you said you have almost 100,000 hits on you web site.. Rush has 20 millions listeners everyday.
10:32 AM on 03/06/2012
Afraid? Scared to death? Afraid of the truth? Ha ha ha!!! Pure GOP! This kind of fodder is why Obama will sail into 2013 with ease........ Yes you are right, "This is getting funny."

Yes fox is where I would go to get the freakin truth NOT

Boycott All his advertisers & affiliations. Free speech may be a right, but incendiary language is not.
You can't yell fire in a crowded theater and Rush should be taken off the air completely for his childish,
"look at me", hateful remarks that are spouted for one reason only.....to incite the right wing to extremist actions.
Men like Rush belong in jail, not on the radio.
08:34 PM on 03/05/2012
I want to write Rush a letter thanking him for igniting women in this country.

This is NOT going away because Mitt Romey has investments in Bain Captial.... Bain Capital owns Clear Channel.... Clear Channel refuses to fire Limbaugh. Consequently, Romey is indirectly SUPPORTING Limbaugh. That is why Romey's response to Limbaugh was so timid and meek.

I know a lot of people really enjoy listening to Rush and his bull but I think its time for him to go. I had to understand when I lost my favoriate soap shows AMC and OLTL and I missed them very much yet I had to get over them so they must get over the Rush show!! LOL.
