A Warning From Thomas Jefferson

Posted: 06/30/11 06:04 PM ET

When it came to setting up our government, Thomas Jefferson had three concerns: tyranny of kings, tyranny of theocrats, and tyranny of the wealthy. For the time being we seem to be safe from kings and theocrats. We are not, however, safe from the super-rich.

Thomas Jefferson is believed to have said: "I believe the banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around [the banks] will deprive the people of all property until their children wake up homeless on the continent their Fathers conquered."

The bankers and corporations have bought and paid for our politicians, both on the Left and the Right. That's why our elected representatives stand mute when it comes to defending the rights of working-class Americans.

It's time to heed Jefferson's words. It's time to fight back.

Editor's Note: The quote attributed to Thomas Jefferson has been found to be apocryphal and does not without a doubt come from him.

If somebody will start the revolution, I will join in to take our country back from the neo-cons, thieves, and crooks!

Why don't you start it?

The cult of Jefferson continues....

Why do Americans worship him as they do? Besides being a blatant racist, he had little direct role in the revolutionary period. Even the Declaration of Indepedence wasn't his work, beyond the stylization of the final writing...the concepts and even words came from others.

In any case, what you refer to isn't Jefferson's hostility to banking in the sense we think of it. Actually his view is similar to Ron Paul's, though probably more extreme. He hated the Bank of the US, and any other similar government-sponsored banking system. If we take Jefferson's advise, we have to abolish the fed, along with all other government intervention into the banking system. We also have to abolish the dollar and revert to some sort of gold standard backed by the states.

Jefferson certainly is in no way a model of what kind of country we want.

Right on. Jefferson lacked practical wisdom and was a first class hypocrit in many areas-- he loved the excesses of the French Revolution and the idea of bloody revolution, but was totally ineffective as a war governor of Virginia. He professed to despise slavery but managed his affairs so poorly that on his death his slaves all had to be sold into continued slavery (contrast Washington). He openly opined that he thought Blacks could never aspire to equality with whites, but had no qualms using them for some puroses (Sally Hemmings). And he professed to be airily above the fray politically while his minions conducted very down and dirty campaigns against John Adams and Alexander Hamilton.

He actually used (as would...certain others in the 20th century) science to justify his racist views. His support for the French Revolution was as disgusting as it was inexcusable. As the ambassador to France he actually helped egg it on.

Jefferson actually has some in common with George W. Bush. Both managed to portay themselves as 'men of the people' even though they were certainly not. Both were bad managers as well. Despite owning slaves and being quite wealthy, Jefferson's estate owed $100,000 more than it was worth when he died (quite a bit of money back then). Both also caused large economic collapses at the end of their presidencies.

American politics since Andrew Jackson has been characterized by Hamiltonianism dressed up in the clothes of Jefferson. Americans love the idea of Jefferson, even though almost everyone is closer to Hamilton ideologically.

It is refreshing to see that not all of us are ignorant of our history.

Maybe it's time for a second American Revolution against these oppressive corporations. Thomas Jefferson was right.

Jefferson's desire for revolution really only applied to the American Revolution. It wasn't a general-purpose view. He made this clear during the compromise of 1820, when it became quite obvious that the issue of slavery threatened a second "revolution"

The question I have is regarding the tools we have to implement change. The best tool is not available and that is campaign finance reform. I am sure you've noticed that the Dems withdrew from their promise to modify the filibuster rules of the Senate. Of course I understand why they withdrew from that effort: they no longer controlled the House or the bills introduced by it. At least they have an excuse for dodging that issue right now. With campaign finance reform, all they can do when asked about it is look at you like some empty-headed witless and gutless wonder.

Excellent words, Mr. Flynt, thank you! It is so sad watching our nation devolve while trying to raise your own family. I fear for the future of our children, and it is devolving on our watch! We are responsible for this, and we must fight to fix it now.
Or "...until their children wake up homeless on the continent their Fathers conquered"

There's a solution to this problem:
1) term limits for any government office
2) pay caps/reductions for all government offices (this includes special privileges enjoyed by officials)
3) making lobbying illegal (aka: bribery)
4) campaign contribution overhaul

Those 4 things would take self-interest out of politics and our government. I believe in what Benjamin Franklin said, that no politician should be paid for their duties. It's a public SERVICE after all. Serve your country, not yourself.

If we didn't pay politicans, only rich people could run for office. That isn't the system we want.

Thank God Almighty, Larry has taken up the fight and is going to get bare-knuckled with the powers that be.

I hope he will investigate these Watergate-type Plumbers who are infusing this corporate and FOREIGN money into our election process, Legislative Processes and the Supreme Court. He needs to investigate
Boehner and his trip to Wall St before the 2010 elections and what promises he made for money, the
activity of the head of the National Chamber of Commerce and his connection to the collection of foreign money and its insertion into our national elections; Karl Rove "the main Plumber" and the accidental open phone converstions that happened to Democrats during their campaign conversations. That smacked specifically of the wiring of the DNC headquarters back in the 70's; the connection between the visits of
Thomas and Scalia to the Florida seminars held by the Koch Brothers and most of all the gifts and payments made to the Thomas household and the decision the Supreme Court made in the FEC case.
I also feel a investigation into Roberts and Alito's personal connections with Corporations would not go
amiss.

I was overjoyed to see Larry's comments about the writing of Thomas Jefferson. I hope also that he will
read George Washington's Farewell Address to the People of the United States of America. Our First President left the nation a great legacy and we as Americans ought to read
it and heed his warnings.

We need you LAARRYYY!!!!! GO LARRY GO!!!!!

Yeah sure, this country has been sliding more and more into religious absolutism for the last fifty years. C'mon, about the only restriction on behavior any more is bestiality, and that will probably fall soon. And if you mention God in public the ACLU will sue your butt.

Tom Jefferson's stock has fallen a lot in recent years with revelations of massive hypocrisy (he feared a dictatorship set up by self-made men John Adams and Alexander Hamilton but worked to establish a dictatorship of Virginia aristrocracy) and financial naivete (Jefferson was generally wrong in matters of finance, public and private). We owe the soundness of our countries financial foundation to Alexander Hamilton, backed up by the intensely practical Washington. Just like today's limousine liberals, Jefferson was forever conjuring up phantasms of dictatorships of the right, to distract from his own accumulation of power.

I can only hope you are right. By any messure, Jefferson isn't just the most overrated founder, but the most overrated president. His only real legacy is a grotsque personality cult.

This is why we shouldn't have a federal reserve. They are more responsible for our economic problems that wall street, obama, bush, or anyone else.

10:09 AM on 07/01/2011
Nonsense, the problem is the banks, from that spring the Federal Reserve finds it's set of members. THAT is the danger, not the institution itself.
10:43 AM on 07/01/2011
While that is a problem, it's still evident that the fed's manipulation of interest rates, printing money out of thin air (quantitative easing), and inflationary measures are hurting this economy more than any president or wall street trader ever could.
