PC Sales Up Despite New Gadgets

Posted: 06/17/10 01:55 PM ET

With all the excitement about iPhones, iPads, Android smartphones and other new devices, it's easy to forget about the old standby personal computer. But despite the explosive growth of choices, PCs continue to do well in the marketplace.

Market research firm iSupply reported on June 4th that the PC market hit "record growth" during the first quarter of 2010, with global sales up nearly 23 percent over the same quarter last year. Of course, one reason for the growth was weak sales in 2009 because of the economic downturn. Still, the good news is worth noting.

Thanks for the report Larry. You're right, in the fog of the latest and greatest cell phone "bill" we don't seem to give short shrift to what is happening in the PC world. I'm sure you keep up with it probably more than I do (maybe) but Windows 7 is rock solid. I read just recently how Windows 7 reached 100 million license mark; making it the fastest-selling MS operating system in history. Good news for the PC market.

Yep. PCs aren't going anywhere. And neither are desktop applications, despite all this frenzy over cloud-based applications. All the gadgets out there still need a hub.

Nothing comes close to the productivity power of a full-fledged desktop.

Smartphones and iDevices are just too limited for me ... give me a lightweight notebook/netbook any day.
