Who Are America's 6 Richest Women?

Posted: 03/24/2012 2:02 pm

Forbes' comprehensive list of the world's billionaires (there are 1226) came out recently, and we were curious -- are there women on the list?

Turns out, there are. Yes, men far outnumber the ladies. But starting at number 11, women help fill out the ranks of the fabulously wealthy.

Where do these fortunes come from? Uniformly, these top six women have shrewdly managed the companies and fortunes handed to them by husbands and fathers. But most of these women have put in their own hard work into these companies to grow them, especially the woman who is now president of Fidelity Investments. (Because women do make better investors!)

Of course, it took a few generations for these fortunes to build up, and many of the male billionaires on Fortunes' list are, well, advanced in age, having worked hard for their wealth over a lifetime. We're looking forward to a few years down the road when the list is populated by many more women and their own companies, instead of those founded by the the men in their lives.

After all, the founder of Spanx just broke into the billionaire list. Who knows what kind of riches she'll have by the time she retires?

Women tend to top out on raises at 37. Don't let this happen to you!
Oh joy. Women tend to make more money than men .... in occupations like shoe shining and house sitting.

It is a sad commentary on our society that the richest women either married the money or were born into it. Does anyone know how that compares to the richest men?

Dear silly, do you understand the concept of percentages? Nobody ever said that it would be fair if everyone paid the same amount of taxes, they are figured in relationship to the total income. So if some multibillionaire pays more than me that does not by a long shot mean that it's fair to the rest of us if she keeps the rest of her multimillion dividend income taxed as if it was no income at all .

How about the six richest women who didn't inherit or marry into the money? This is kind of a backwards message.

To all the commentors complaining that most of the women are relatives or widows, two words for you: glass ceiling. Women can't get roles like men can in the workforce unless they're related to the CEO or sleeping with them. That's a problem. So don't blame women, blame power hungry men who don't give hard working ones a chance.

Agreed, however, I'm more interested in reading about women who start their own buisnesses and define their own glass ceiling. These are the kinds of inspirational messages that women need to hear right now.

More impressed with women like Sara Blakely (Spanx) and Oprah Winfrey who are self-made billionaires...

"No person should be rich based on the womb from which (s)he sprang" -- Warren Buffett

Like these women are. It's why Buffett is giving his away, the US doesn't need royals.

All are widows, children, or grandchildren! Not one self-made person among them! If you want to be a mega-wealthy woman in this country, either be born into a wealthy family.. or marry somebody who is (or will be) mega rich.

At times I feel we've been going backwards since the 70s....Are we in the 1800s again? I guess I'm supposed to feel fortunate women are allowed to be on the list at all.

"But most of these women have put in their own hard work into these companies to grow them, especially the woman who is now president of Fidelity Investments"-good grief, they all came from wealth...with her father. I'm reminded of the days when women weren't allowed to own property. It passed from their father to their husband.

Says a lot about society, not about women.

Why are you wasting my time and your space with this baloney? These women have never had to work and struggle like I have (or anyone I know). They've never had to "get by" or do without, and wouldn't last a week surviving on the next-to-nothing I've been eking out since my unemployment ran out in 2010!! These women are CLUELESS about real life in America, so why should be give a DAMN about their self-entitled privileged little lives???
02:34 PM on 03/25/2012
I thought for sure Oprah would be on the list. At least she is self-made.
03:21 AM on 03/26/2012
Exactly. Let's make a list of self made billionaires (both male and female).

Which is a good point. Steve Forbes is very right wing. Another blog mentioned that after women's names, it will explain & family. The men no doubt came from family money in large percentages as well.

We need a better list than Forbes
