There has been quite a furry over the past week concerning some admittedly controversial statements made by Senator Obama's pastor, Reverend Jeremiah Wright. Yet, if we look at Rev. Wright's statements in full context, they are nothing more than a man speaking truth to power. Rather than acknowledge the truth about the dark past of America, and in some instances the present, we are quick to charge anyone who removes the veil of our history, as being racist and/or anti-American.
African American religious leaders have historically combined sociology, theology and politics. In some instances, it has been done to inspire change, and in other instances, to inspire awareness. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is a prime example. Yet, he was considered an agent of change and is celebrated for his courage and involvement in the Civil Rights movement through non-violent means. Why now is Rev. Wright viewed differently and even vilified? Is it because Dr. King was more eloquent in his speech than Rev. Wright. No! The answer can only lie in the fact that Rev. Wright is the pastor of an African American presidential hopeful who has seemingly wooed white America by running a campaign that has made every effort to transcend racial divisiveness. In other words, if Senator Obama is removed from the equation, how interested is America in the veracity or inflammatory nature of the comments made by Rev. Wright?
In all fairness, the comments of Rev. Wright deserve a closer analysis in order to determine whether they are in fact racist and anti-American, or, is the media engaging in nothing more than sensationalism in an effort to diminish Senator Obama's cross cultural appeal.
One of the primary comments criticized by the media is that Senator Obama knows what it means to be a black man in an America controlled by rich, white people. Does the malfeasance lie in the fact that Senator Obama grew up as a black man in America or that America is controlled by rich, white people? Certainly it cannot be the former. It is irrefutable that George W. Bush and Dick Cheney are rich, white men in control of economic, social and political policy in America. The question then becomes, is it racist or anti-American to say that Ameica is controlled by rich, white people or is this a truth spoken to power?
Another comment which is more shocking than anything else is Rev. Wright's announcement that Senator Clinton can never know what it means to be a black man in America, and, she has never been called the "n" word. Yet, whether we are speaking of Hillary Clinton or any other white person of privilege in this nation, the fact remains they can never know what it has meant, or what it means, to be a black man in America. Neither can they know how deeply hurtful it is to be called the "n" word or worse yet to be treated as a member of the "n" class. Unfortunately, as progressive as we would like to consider ourselves, racism is alive and well in our society. We have made strives but we still have a long road ahead.
Interestingly, although Bill Clinton has been spoken of as the first black president of the United States, Rev. Wright said Bill Clinton did to black people what he did to Monica Lewinski, "he was riding dirty." In other words, Bill Clinton had an intimate relationship with a mesmerized young woman with no intention of treating her with dignity or respect. The impact of the three strikes laws on the African American community and funding of prisons to the detriment of education and healthcare is analogous.
A close look at any state budget in this country will reveal that the majority of state resources are directed toward prisons to the detriment of education and other necessary state programs. Many states are experiencing critical budget crisis but they will not compromise where the prison systems are concerned. In the past five years alone, states have faced a combined $200 billion in budget gaps. Meanwhile, prisons continue to consume a larger portion of the state budget pie--$35 billion annually in 1999, up from $17 billion in 1990--rendering them a bigger target for budget cutters. From 1985 to 2000, prison budgets grew at six times the rate of higher education budgets. If imprisoned, the Black man provides jobs and economic opportunities for the white underclass. The three strikes law and mandatory sentencing is a good way of ensuring the prison system stays in business and correctional officers employed.
Another example is Bill Clinton's welfare reform which eliminated Aid to Families With Dependent Children and forced women into low paying jobs with no consideration for child care. Thus, a new category of the working poor. Yes, Bill Clinton has a relationship with African Americans but has he really treated us with dignity and respect?
Finally, Rev. Wright spoke of the lies of the American government. According to Rev. Wright, the American government lied about the connection of Al Qaeda to Saddam Hussein; the connection of 9/11 to Operation Iraqi Freedom; and, weapons of mass destruction. Ironically, the goal of the democratic party is to unseat the current administration because of these very lies and the detriment they have caused to our economy and standing in the world. The remaining Bush supporters are among the rare few who choose to think otherwise. They (Sean Hannity) are also believed to be the originators of this controversy.
Once again, the American public is being duped. Unfortunately, Senator Obama is receiving the brunt of it all. He is now being charged as being associated with a racist and anti-American minister by white Americans and lacking allegiance by African American ministers. There has been no focus on John McCain's spiritual advisors or the Reverend Billy Graham who was heard on tape speaking against the Jewish people to former president Richard Nixon. Hopefully, Americans will look beyond the rhetoric and analyze Senator Obama's capacity to be president based upon his record and ideological perspectives about the issues that really matter to this country.

When I was ten, I remember watching the Watts Riots with my Aunt Bea, the beautiful black woman who raised me.
Sensing she was disturbed by what we were watching I said, "Isn't it terrible, Aunt Bea, that some white people don't understand that we're all the same. (I wanted her to know I wasn't one of THOSE white people) What she said changed my life, forever. She said:
"Honey, black people and white people ARE different," and then with a big smile on her face, she said, "but, that doesn't mean we can't get along."
I've now spent the last forty-six years playing jazz bass, working, and living in the only industry in America that "equal opportunity" actually means equal opportunity. (click on the following link to get a sense of what I mean)
http://www.harlem.org/
But, it wasn't until much later that I honestly understood what my Aunt Bea meant. What "being different and getting along" means is...
Peace, Love, and Understanding is found by honoring differences, not in erasing them. Tolerance is equality. We're not supposed to be the same, we're supposed to all have the SAME CHANCE to be ourselves.
"Love thy neighbor, as they self."
I believe this is what the Rev. Jeremiah Write meant by what he said. If he were a tenor saxophone player, he'd be John Coltrane playing "Naima." His sermon is like a Greek tragedy: it is meant to be uplifting, not demeaning.

Obama's job now is to inform America what lies ahead. I have a feeling that we may find ourselves being a little puzzled at first, but our challenge is great. It is not for him to explain why he listens to Rev. Write, it's our job to understand the importance of different perspectives.
It's an audacious hope, but one we can ill afford to ignore.

As I understand it, Rev. Wright served our nation in the Navy and has done a tremendous amount of good work helping poor people in Chicago. I honor and thank him for both. I also can understand why an African-American man born in 1941, who grew up in the 1950"s, and who was an adult in the 1960"s might be angry at America. I am sure he has ample reason to be. Some argue that he is only speaking the truth, albeit uncomfortable ones. An argument could be made that the U.S. is killing innocent people and that the September 11th attacks were a justifiable reaction to U.S. foreign policy. I would vehemently disagree, but the argument could be made. But the statement that the government invented AIDS in order to kill people of color is nothing but a vicious and indefensible slander.
"A close look at any state budget in this country will reveal that the majority of state resources are directed toward prisons to the detriment of education and other
necessary state programs."
Clearly no state is spending a MAJORITY of its revenues on prisons. I just took a look at the New York State budget and discovered that New York State is spending $19 Billion on education and $4.14 Billion on criminal justice (including not just prisons but the State Police). This is only state expenditures, not expenditures by cities, towns and counties.
http://www.osc.state.ny.us/reports/budget/2007/enactedbudget0507.pdf
While many people, including apparently Rev. Wright, argue that African-Americans have disproportionately suffered as a result of increasing prison populations, it can also be argued that African-Americans disproportionately BENEFITED as a result of falling crime rates.
I spent three years as a teacher in a South Bronx high school. (Where, ironically, I was called an "N" word over a dozen times even though I am about as white as you can be without being an albino.) I understand how important education is to breaking the cycle of poverty and hate. I think we would be better served working together to improve our schools, rather than shouting insults at each other. I wish Barack Obama still had an open mind on school vouchers so that poor parents might have the same chance to pull their kids out of failing public schools that wealthier families have.
Just for the record, I don"t believe Obama shares Rev. Wright"s more controversial beliefs, though I do not believe Obama was as ignorant of those beliefs as he claims. It won"t affect my vote one way or another since I am brain dead Rethuglican zombie who will vote for John McCain. But I still have tremendous admiration for Barack Obama.
Okay, perhaps the statement should have been "a significant portion" of state resources are going to prisons. The bottom line is that money is being spent that would be better served on education for youth and drug offenders. Our society spends more resources putting non violent offenders in prison than educating them. The three strikes law now allows many non violent offenders to be imprisoned for life when a rehabilitation program and job training would restore dignity and make the individual a productive citizen. Therefore, a play in words, significant vs. majority, is irrelevant. In California, our 2008 budget allocates 7.6% to corrections and 10.7% to higher education. Do the math!
As it happens, in addition to being a former teacher, I also spent a year working in a legal clinic assisting federal prisoners. I am actually quite sympathetic towards many people whose circumstances lead them to make poor choices. But I also believe that increased incarceration was a significant contributing factor to the reduction in crime in crime over the past 15+ years. In NYC, the homicide rate has fallen by over 75% since the early 90's. As someone who grew up in the Bronx and who has lived most of his life here, the difference in quality of life is unmistakable.
As a result of this drop in crime rates, New York"s prison population is beginning to shrink. This is unquestionably a good thing. New York is increasing its education budget as well. Unfortunately, the education problems are not a result of funding alone.
You make a comment that the U.S. is killing innocent people and that the September 11th attacks were a justifiable reaction to U.S. foreign policy, a statement you would vehemently disagree with. However, that is exactly why September 11th happened - our unfair and unjust foreign policies in the Middle East. The U.S. has been creating havoc over there since 1948; how much unfairness can one group of people endure before they uprise and fight back? The U.S. has been killing people in the Middle East for year ! They just have a sneaky way of doing it.
Also, if you vote for McCain, you are voting to put another Bush back in office; someone who doesn't care about the people and has a personal vendetta against the Middle East in order to establish a military presence in an oil-rich country.
Questions about Obamas church and contributers are legit and probably a bit late.
Obamas mega church connection wasnt vetted. Shame on the press.
Obama got millions from the church parishoners. What was delivered in return?
Is Obamas undying support for Bushes No Child Left Behind Act related to church school funding?
Has the church recieved federal or state money for other programs?
The Rezko "contributions" werent vetted either.
Why would Rezko give Obama almost a million dollars over the years?
Why did Tezko help Obama buy his mansion and the propoerty next door if nothing wasnt expected and delivered. How did Rezko benefit financially from the relationship?
It is legit to ask and research before voting and not afterwards when its too late.
We dont need another Bush surpise.
This is the main reason why race needed to stay out of the campaign. Once race or gender enter the picture everything gets cloudy. Because race has such an ugly history in america and it is definately divisive bringing it up makes everybody loose. Politicians who use it to gain office, WILL never get my vote. I believe the way forward on this is to remember what Barack said earlier. Nothing in America is accomplished, EVER, until the ameircan people get involved and the politics of fear is really getting old. Barack is part of the new generation of black leaders who don't have the scars and baggage of the jim crow days. In my mind thats a good thing because it gives we americans of all races, education, socioeconomic status a chance to do better, by getting past blaming white people for all ills. That what Barrack is all about. We have to look beyond color and all of that stuff so that we can improve our nation and world. I (SITLL) believe Barack can get us there.....but as he also mentioned this will not be easy and it will take a lot of courage. I was distressed by all this race talk at first, but then I realized that it was going to come out sooner or later, but america has to have the courage not to turn back now......(in the words of MLK) and really have the courage of our conviction. We have to make sure that if we dont vote for Barack or Hillary it is not becuase of fear of him being a black man or her being a female. We all no america's history and short-comings. The question is are we going to take the fear/race bait? or are we going to take the high road and not judge Barack Obama on the 30 seconds sound bites of his minister (who has been a minister for 36 years, and experienced a different type of american)? I just hate how there always have to be a black or white or red or blue, or conservative or liberal or us against them mentaility, when we all no the issues are more shades of gray. I am veteran and I love american and my only sane option is to trust the american people, to appeal to their sense of decency and fairness, and know they will do the right thing. Barack is a good honest, decent man and he will make a decent, honest president. How about that for a change.
OBAMA in 08
Hopefully, race should stay out of the campaign, unless the subject is relevant to the character of the nominee. Geraldine Ferraro made one statement about race, and the Obama supporters obviously believed that one statement to be extremely relevant to the campaign. That story is still in the news to this day. That statement, however, was not relevant to the character of Hillary Clinton, because it was immediately denounced by her, and Ferraro left the campaign. The fact that Obama has a 20 year close relationship with Wright who he calls his "mentor and spiritual adviser" a man who has been uttering racist and anti-American statements for years, is relevant to the campaign, in that it speaks to his character. Obama did not denounce his pastors views until those views were outed by the press. In addition, Obama, being the good lawyer that he is, was very specific in his belated denunciation. He said that he had not heard any of these statements which were shown on television, and that if he had, he would not have agreed. What he didn't say was much more important: he did not say that he was unaware of Wrights views on the issues of race, divisiveness, and the actions of our country. This is because he knows that it is beyond belief that during the 20 years of this very close relationship, Obama had no knowledge of Wrights views on these issues. This is a serious issue for Obama, because after all, he is not running on his experience, as much as his judgment and ability to "bring us together." This long-standing relationship with Wright flies in the face of both of his alleged advantages.
What about Jeremiah Wright's love letter to America-hating, Jew-baiting Louis Farrakhan?
The one where he wrote (of Farrakhan) : "When Minister Farrakhan speaks, Black
America listens. Everybody may not agree with him, but they
listen ... His depth on analysis when it comes to the racial ills of
this nation is astonishing and eye-opening. He brings a perspective
that is helpful and honest
"Minister Farrakhan will be remembered as one of the 20th and 21st
century giants of the African-America religious experience. His
integrity and honesty have secured him a place in history as one of
the nation's most powerful critics. His love for Africa and African-
American people has made him an unforgettable force, a catalyst for
change, and a religious leader who is sincere about his faith and
purpose."
Unfortunately I doubt this level of clear headed headed analysis will ever make it into the main stream media. They prefer the run and re-run the same inflammatory clips with little analysis. Today when Senator Obama was making speech in PA regarding this issues they chose not to show it saying instead they would cut to it if he said anything "worth covering". Come on people.
I agree that there has not been sufficient examination of just what Pastor Wright said - the media has fixed on the most inflammatory comments, rather than acknowledging that much of what he talked about is true. Is it a fact that we spend more on prison than education? yes. A fact that a disproportionate number of black and minority men are in prison? yes. A fact that judges themselves have wanted to change strict sentencing laws that put too many people in prison for too long? yes. Anyone who doesn't know those things hasn't been paying attention over the last two decades, to round it off.
It is lamentable that Senator Obama is accused of what? listening to Wright? although obviously Obama's entire working approach has been different. It isn't that he ignores the injustices that exist, but he is trying to rally people with the energy to deal with them, and to have energy-giving hope that they can make a change. He still gets my vote.
There have been flamers on the right as well, and no one has spent much energy looking at who the evangelicals have been listening to.
A transcript of The Audacity of Hope, the sermon that inspired Obama's book of the same title, can be read here: http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/the_daily_dish/2008/03/for-the-record.html.
I agree, no one spends much energy looking at (or listening to) who *anyone* is listening to, whether they agree, disagree or don't have an opinion.
For Christ's sake! Michelle and and Barack make nearly 500,000 per year. Their children are in every sort of advantaged extra curricular activity. They're Ivy League educated and if they've suffered the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune - then that is some generous fortune slinging around them. Oh, and if you haven't heard - the man is successfully running for President of the greatest country in America. What people don't like is the man who supposedly trancends race is an acolyte of a bitter, black supremecist race huckster qua Farrakhan - yet another predictibly bitter, bigoted, racist admirer of Obama. That Mr. Wright was a former Marine and familiar with LBJ shows that even a man accepted and successful in America like Mr. Wright apparently was is still a nasty, opprotunistic asshole. A twenty year relationship with Mr. Wright - the man who married Michelle and Barack and baptized is children is a far cry from McCain speaking 20 mintues at Liberty. For a candidate who genuinely trancends race - something this country needs - perhaps Mr. Obama isn't that guy. That Mr. Wright is a raving left-wing shit must only endear ardent Obama supporters that much more.
We all notice how you conveniently skip over the "God Damn America" comment...
Wright is a vile racist, and it is impossible to believe that Obama attended that church for 20 years and didn't know that Wright was a lunatic. Wright's comments were disgusting and disgraceful.
If we dug so deeply into our current president's associations, upbringing, political views, etc., there would be no end of controversy, that is, if we could actually have an HONEST discussion about how close the views of his peers, promoters, etc., haver been in line with those of the general public and its needs. TOTAL DISCONNECTION is being generous. We might as well have had an alien from Mars.
Who cares what a pastor may have exclaimed from the pulpit? I'm sure he could have said much worse things and been very accurate. He probably didnt say enough.
AND FOR ALL YOU HAPPY REPUBLICAN CAMPERS:
Ever notice how the price of gas doubled in GWB's presidency after having invaded the most oil rich territory on the planet? Can you please give us some great explanation? Maybe find some liberals or pastors to blame.
so what, Gas goes up, I'll take the bus... thats what you liberals want anyway right? We can't drill for our own oil. Back to Rev Wright, he is speaking your language too bad your not a Pennsylvania voter.
Easy explanation. We are prohibited from taking that oil as our own. Mainly because the liberals said they wouldn't allow it. So that kind of kills the "blood for oil" argument, huh?
The price of gas went from $1.04 in 1992 to $1.60 at the end of the Clinton presidency. Where were your cries then?
Apparently, Obama *did* know, because Wright was excluded from the celebrations when Obama announced his candidacy explicitly because he was deemed a loose cannon.
I will never cease to be amazed by the depth of denial in some white Americans, typified by comments like the one above.
Have you noticed, for example, that Rev. Wright looks as though he probably has a number of white relatives in his family background? How is it possible for people with multiracial backgrounds to be "racist?" Please compare this with actual racists who believe in and practice racial purity, do not have or want any black friends, relatives, neighbors or co-workers.
Please compare Wright's so-called hate speech with actual hate speech that encourages people to physically harm others, prevent them from obtaining rights equal to your own, referring to them as less than human.
Farrakhan, as other ignorant (and usually older) people remark, is a better example of a racist (although he is also of mixed racial lineage). He has promoted a lot of hateful rhetoric against Jews, which he has since renounced. However, contrary to what Rev. Wright's claims, Farrakhan's influence has waned considerably since the '80's. He is hardly a mainstream figure in the black community, any more than Pat Robertson can be said to represents the heterosexual community's attitude toward gays and lesbians.
Finally, do you realize how obvious it is to anyone with critical thinking faculties that your hysterical charges of racism in this case clearly indicate that you cannot possibly have ever had an in-depth conversation with a black person? (And I don't mean asking how the weather is when someone rings up your groceries). Who is the racist?
To suggest that because one might be bi-racial makes it impossible or unlikely that he/she will be a racist is a fallacy. When Farrakhan recently extolled Obama's virtues to his flock, he made a point of the fact that Malcolm X's mother was white. Yes, Malcolm X' mother was white, but it didn't stop him from hating white people (until he was converted from the Nation of Islam just prior to his murder at the hands of NOI members).
I don't believe the only issue is whether Wright was correct or incorrect on the subjects about which he spoke. A very important issue is the divisiveness of his sermons; the black versus white themes; the "blame everything on the white man" themes. I think it is instructive to learn what brand of "Christianity" Obama has been listening to for 20 years. Rev. Wright believes in black theology, and that"s what he preaches at his church. He admits this and it is stated on the church's website. Black theology is based upon the premise of the white oppressor against the black oppressed. Obama"s church gave Farrakhan a "lifetime achievement award" last November. Rev. Wright called 9/11 a "wake-up call to white people." Commenting on the recent murder of Natalie Holloway, he decried the press coverage by stating that "one 18 year-old white girl from Alabama gets drunk on a graduation trip to Aruba, goes off and gives it up while in a foreign country, and that stays in the news for months." Rev. Wright cites James Cone as his theological inspiration, who is another proponent of Black Theology. Here are just a couple of James Cone's quotes: (1) "To be Christian is to be one of those whom God has chosen. God has chosen black people." (2) "While it is true that blacks do hate whites, black hatred is not racism." (3) "All white men are responsible for white oppression." (4) "Theologically, Malcolm X was not far wrong when he called the white man "the devil." (5) "If there is any contemporary meaning of the Antichrist, the white church seems to be a manifestation of it." *** These teachings are fundamentally racist and divisive. Obama is not an unintelligent man; he knows what his pastor teaches and believes. He should have taken his family out of that church years ago. No, it is not enough to just say you disagree with SOME of his statements; it is much too late for that!!!
Divisiveness is indeed the subject and it's the black's that are being divided by prejudice as they always have. I agree with the author but although I'm white I agree I'll never know what it's like to be a black man in America but I DO KNOW what it's like to be a nigger. That's right one doesn't have to be black to be a nigger. When I lived in Hawaii in the 70's I got plenty of prejudice against the color of my skin. I was forced to sit at the back of the bus IF they would let me on. I along with the rest of the poor working whites lived in the same slums as the blacks and we were one. One night a couple of Mokes were going to kill me for fun when my neighbor a black man and martial artist of some reknown came out of the shadows and downed them FAST! It was a strange time for me I had never had so many people the majority of people around me hate me just because of my color, to them both the whites and the blacks were both considered "niggers" and we had to take it. It is a very serious problem in that state which knows about this and does nothing. I learned an awful lot when I lived there and achieved a special appreciation for what blacks have had to put with and are still putting up with.
Racism is wrong, period, no matter from which side it emanates. I don't think it helps the dialogue to make excuses for it. I would rather believe in Dr. King's exhortation that we should judge people not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. Unfortunately for Obama, his willingness to support such racially divisive speech for 20 years speaks volume about his character.
Divisive to whom?
If you are concerned with the sermons that Obama has listen to and which Wright has given over the last 20 years, then I would suggest that your research into the Rev Wright brand of Christianity (sanctioned by an predominately white denomination) be a bit more extensive than selective snippets of a few sermons and quotations without context.
ovcatto: First, please explain to me in what context the racist statements above are acceptable. Second, if the same statements in reverse were made by a "white centered church," would you be likewise unconcerned? I don't think so.
Who cares about Reverend Wright
The question is about Obamas affiliations and truthfullness.
If he'd lie about Wright and Rezko, Whats next?
Would he be any better than Bush?
At this point Obama may be a better lier than Bush.
This is what we need to know to vote.
Someone needs to research Obamas statement for truthfullness.
And one can only wonder why Sunday is the most segregated day of the week. America can't talk about race but we hold ourselves as the supreme nation. How is that South Africa is able to rise above their division to put Mandela in office. Maybe because they are not afraid of the truth. Clearly the "superiority gene" has made its mark on the DNA on some of descendants of our founding fathers......
This is why I love the Huffington Post. I read such enlightenment from "white" America and it lets me know that we can't paint everyone with the same brush. They are some Obama's staunches supporters. Keep up!
Obama '08!
These mainstream media smears will not damage Barack"s campaign; albeit, these pundits will try to make it look that way, and they have the means to do this. Nevertheless, if Barack"s supporters simply use their "critical thinking" capacity to "think and rethink," they will not be moved by this claptrap to destroy him. Because of tragedies like the "Tuskegee Experiment," James Byrd in Texas, Jena 6, and countless other attacks on Blacks and the way that the nation-state media frames crime to serve the interest of their employers/masters, Blacks, Whites, Latinos, and others are taking a closer look at the American government. After all, the constitution was not written for Blacks, and the 14th Amendment is proof of that inequality; read it with a critical eye. The more the media tries to separate people, they will become more united.
Beyond doubt, the real culprits seeking to destroy Barack"s credibility are the ones who are clear-cut racists. A person who is not racist desires to know the truth, despite the consequences. The truth is liberating! If you have not seen the cheer for Barack below, read it; it speaks volumes of his support.
