TGIF everyone here's my Top 5 for January 4, 2013 from Len Berman at www.ThatsSports.com.
1. Quick Hits
- The NFL playoffs begin this weekend with four games.
- Former Eagles coach Andy Reid could be named the new Kansas City Chiefs coach today.
- At the Fiesta Bowl, Oregon beat Kansas State 35-17. A one-point safety?
2. Making a Point
OK sports fans, how many ways can you score one point in a college football game? Of course you knew all about the one-point safety right? It happened in last night's Fiesta Bowl. What, they have CFL rouges down here?
It's the fourth one-point safety in NCAA history. Who will be the first Top 5 subscriber to win an office bet on this one today?
3. Hall of a Debate
Cooperstown votes are being cast and we'll know the results next Wednesday. Will Barry Bonds or Roger Clemens be a first ballot hall of famer? If not, what percentage of votes will they get? It's hard to argue their worthiness except for that pesky little steroid thing. I'm guessing at some point they'll both get in. Now about Pete Rose...
4. Friday eMailbag
I asked on Facebook yesterday at "Len Berman's Top 5" what acquisition the Yankees might make? Yesterday was the anniversary of the Yanks getting the Babe and George Steinbrenner buying the team. M.K. answered, "If they do acquire someone, they will surely be close to 40 years of age. I think there are softball beer leagues with younger rosters than the Yankees."
From subscriber J.B. "Please include it in your "Happy Birthday" section, for tomorrow Jan. 5 (I know it's Saturday) Lou Carnesecca's birthday."
Editor's Note: For sure. Happy 88th to one of my all time faves!
With the death of Jack Klugman I included an Odd Couple episode where sportswriter Oscar Madison (Klugman) squared off against Howard Cosell. Top 5 subscriber K.F. passed along this clip from a 1961 Twilight Zone episode. Klugman stars as a pool shark. Enjoy!
5. Spanning the World
This week's Spanning the World highlight comes from a girls high school basketball game in Indiana. It's worth three points and another look!
Spanning the World airs monthly on NBC's Today Show.
Happy Birthday: NFL coaching great Don Shula. 83.
Bonus Birthday: Actress Dyan Cannon (once married to Cary Grant). 76.
Today in Sports: The Dodgers become the first team to buy their own airplane. 1957.
Bonus Event: Minnesota inaugurated pro wrestler Jesse Ventura as its 38th governor. 1999.
Fun Fact: The Top 5 was read yesterday in Morocco and Thailand, but you guessed it, not in South Dakota.
