Happy Thursday everyone, here's my Top 5 for April 11, 2013 from Len Berman at www.ThatsSports.com.
1. Quick Hits
- The Masters is underway.
- Ted Potter, Jr. won the Masters Par 3 Contest yesterday.
- The Miami Heat wrapped up home court throughout the NBA playoffs.
- Super Kobe. Kobe Bryant has put the Lakers on his shoulders scoring 47 points last night in their win over Portland. The Lakers, at the moment, are in the playoffs.
2. Sellouts
Yes, the Red Sox Fenway sellout streak died last night after a record 794 regular season games. But wait tweets @MikeCousins. He says the Dayton Dragons streak is still alive. That got me interested since I started my professional career in Dayton, Ohio. And yes, The Dragons have sold out every game of their 13 year existence, it's 913 games and counting. Sure their capacity is only 7,320. But every seat has its own cup holder. Aha, that explains it. Or maybe it's the entertainment. On July 21st BirdZerk! "will bring his wild and crazy antics to the ballpark." Think San Diego Chicken on speed.
3. Class
Yankees closer Mariano Rivera is on his farewell tour. As part of it, he is thanking the employees of Major League teams. Yesterday it was Cleveland. He met with 25 Indians employees for half an hour. Ushers, ticket people and the like. He wanted to thank them for what they do. He asked "where's the drummer?" The guy who bangs that drum every game." When John Adams stepped forward Rivera said "Hey, you the man... being loyal, being there day in and day out. I really respect that." And how can you not respect Rivera?
4. Modern Culture
For any of you who aren't fans of the ever-evolving pop culture. If you open something like Page Six and don't recognize a single name, then I've got a hero for you. He's Dodgers announcer Vin Scully. During last night's game he ruminated about such things as hashtags and DogTV. He asks a logical question. Are cats allowed to watch? Vinnie is simply the best.
5. World Peace
Metta World Peace of the Lakers came back to play just 12 days after knee surgery. How did he do it? We'll let Mr. Peace or is it Mr. World Peace explain. There you have it. He was "too sexy for his cat." Forget Dennis Rodman, with this guy's name shouldn't he be our next envoy to North Korea?
Happy Birthday: Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira. 33.
Bonus Birthday: Song and dance man Joel Grey. 81.
Today in Sports: The New York Mets were born. Playing their first regular season game they lost to St. Louis 11-4. 1962.
Bonus Event: Take a hike. Napoleon is exiled to Elba. 1814.
